Griboyedov Alexander Sergeevich (1795 – 1829).
This man was talented in everything. He knew 9 languages, composed music and
was a virtuoso pianist, proved himself well in the diplomatic service. And at
the age of 29, he wrote a play that has not left the theater stage for almost
200 years.
Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov was born in
Moscow in 1795. The father was a retired officer with Polish roots; the surname
is a Russified version of the surname Grzybowski. Like many young people of his
circle, Griboyedov graduated from Moscow University, and during the Patriotic
War of 1812 he enlisted in the army. He served until 1816, retiring with the
rank of cornet.
He devoted his free time to the joys of life,
romances with actresses. However, having the talent to win people over, he
became close to many famous personalities of that time. Acquaintances led him
to a Masonic lodge. Griboyedov was in it until his death, and tried to adapt
European Freemasonry to Russian realities.
Service in the College of Foreign Affairs was
marked by a «quarter duel». Both debaters and seconds were shooting: the
conflict over the actress ended with the death of one of the duelists.
Griboyedov himself was shot in the arm, having lost a finger.
Before the tsar, who sent duelists to jail,
the novice diplomat was rehabilitated by a successful mission in Persia. The
agreement, signed largely thanks to his efforts, brought Russia half of Armenia
and a large contribution.
In 1824, Griboyedov completed the comedy «Woe
from Wit», in which he bitterly criticizes the Moscow aristocracy. The
publication faces difficulties, only its individual parts are printed and the
work goes in handwritten copies. In full, the play was published only in 1860.
After a two-year break, Alexander Sergeyevich
returned to Persia, then served in the Caucasus, until his arrest in 1826. The
Empire survived an attempted coup, and a diplomat familiar with many
Decembrists came under suspicion. General Ermolov, the governor in the
Caucasus, helped him escape punishment. However, unspoken police supervision was
established.
Having gone as an ambassador to Persia,
Alexander Sergeevich stopped in Tiflis, where he met 16-year-old Princess Nino
Chavchavadze. After the wedding, they were together for only a few weeks. At
the end of January, Griboyedov died defending the Russian embassy. And Nino
wore mourning for 28 years, until she went to heaven after her beloved spouse.
