Subject: Hi
from Argentina

Hi Daniel,
My name’s
Alessandra. It’s an Italian name, because my grandmother was from Italy, but
I’m Argentinian and I live in Mendoza, a big city in the west of the country.
I live with my parents and my two brothers. I’m 19 and I’m at University. I’m
studying computer science. I’m in my first year and I really like it.
I’m going
to tell you about myself. As you can see from the photo, I have long hair –
it’s quite fair – and green eyes. I wear glasses, but I want to get contact
lenses soon.
I think I’m
a positive person. I’m quite extrovert and friendly. My mother says I’m very
talkative – I think she means that I talk too much!
In my free
time I love reading and going to the cinema. But I don’t have much free time
because I have classes every day, and a lot of work to do even at weekends. I
also go to English classes on Friday afternoon.
Please
write soon and tell me about you and your life.
Best wishes
Alessandra

Hi
Alessandra,
Thanks for
your last e-mail. I hope your exams went well. I have some exciting news and
I’m writing to ask for your advice.
I want to
go on holiday to Argentina next year. What do you think is the best month for
me to come? I can only come for three weeks, so which places do you think I
should visit? Do you think I should hire a car or travel around by bus or
train?
I’m
planning to spend a few days in and around Mendoza, and it would be great if
we could meet. Can you recommend a good hotel?
Hope to
hear from you soon!

Information about courses
|
Dear
Sir/Madam,
I am
writing to ask for information about your language courses. I am especially
interested in an intensive course of two or three weeks. I am 31 and I work
in the library at Milan University. I can read English quite well but I need
to improve my listening and speaking. The book I am currently studying is
‘pre-intermediate’ (Common European Framework level A2).
I have
looked at your website, but there is no information about intensive courses
next summer. Could you please send me information about dates and prices? I
would also like some information about accommodation. If possible I would
like to stay with a family. My wife is going to visit me for a weekend when I
am at the school. Could she stay with me in the same family?
I look
forward to hearing from you.
Your
faithfully

Dear Claudia,
I hope you`re well.
I`ve
just had an email from your friend Christelle. She wants to rent a room in
my house this summer. Could you tell me a bit about her (age, personality,
etc. and what she likes doing) so that I can see if she would fit in with the
family? Please be honest!
Send
my regards to your family and I hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,

From: Claudia
To: Stephanie
Subject: Hi from Switzerland
|
|
Hi Stephanie,
Thanks for your email.
Of course I can tell you about
Christelle. She`s 21 and she is studying law with me.
I think she`s quite extrovert
and very sociable – she has lots of friends. She`s also very good with
children. She has a young step-brother and several young cousins, and I know
she likes playing with them. She`s incredibly hard-working and responsible –
she passed all her exams last year, which is more than I did!
She likes going out, seeing
films and listening to music, but not rock or heavy metal – so don`t worry
about noise! And she`s happy to do things on her own - she`s very
independent, so you won`t really have to look after her. Her parents are
divorced and she lives with her mother and stepfather, but she also sees her
father regularly.
The only negative things I can
think of are that she`s a bit untidy – her room is usually in a mess – and
that her English is, well, not brilliant. But I`m sure she`ll learn fast! I
think she`s really nice and that you and the family will get on well with
her.
I hope that`s useful. Let me
know if you need any more information about her.
Love,
Claudia

Exercise 10
Read the email and answer the questions.
1. What
is the relationship between Martha and Fernanda?
·
friends who are in close contact
·
friends who haven`t seen each other for a long time
·
family members who haven`t seen each other for a long time
·
colleagues who see each other at work
2. Who
else does Martha mention?
From: Martha
To: Fernanda
Subject: The best friend

|
Hi
Fernanda!
It`s so great to find you after all this time. I can`t believe it – Facebook
is so fab – I`ve tried to think about how to get in touch with you so much
and I couldn`t think what to do. I looked on Facebook loads of times and
there were so many people with your name. I couldn`t see your picture
anywhere so I sent a couple of emails to some of them without pix but nobody
got back to me. L Then the other
day, I decided to look again and your face was there!!! J
So,
some of my news. When I left Portugal – all those years ago!! – I came back
to England and got a job teaching at a secondary school. I didn`t stay long
cos it was really awful. You know just really difficult kids and long hours
and stuff like that. Well, after that I messed around for ages, sort of
looking for another job, but not doing much really. After a bit, I got into
helping at my friend`s café
and things went from there. She had to go abroad for a while so she left me
in charge and I became the sort of manager. Love it! So, at the moment that`s
what I`m doing – though I think I might go back to college and do some
training. I`d like to learn how to cook properly – maybe get into that side
of things. You know a professional chef or something.
Anyway, enough about me – what about you?! How`s it going? Are you still
living in Lisbon? What are you doing? I want to hear about your brother Paulo,
too. What`s he up to? Email me back straight away!! Can`t believe I lost
touch with a great friend like you!
Lots
of love,
Martha

2. Is
the language in the email more informal or more formal?
