Teacher: So, thanks. Some of our students have prepared interesting facts about the history of this special day.
Student 1: St. Valentine's Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of the day is Cupid, the Roman god of Love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow.
Student 2: Three hundred years after the death of
Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that veryone believed in the
Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his
teachings. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a
Christian, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the
jailer's daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote
the jailer's daughter a farewell letter, signing it, "From Your
Valentine."
Student 3: Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well loved by all, wrote notes from his jail cell to children and friends who missed him.
Student 4: Another Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time. He was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor. Some legends say he was burned at the stake.
Student 5: St. Valentine's Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send "valentines," a greeting card named after the notes that St. Valentine wrote from jail.
Teacher: And now let's find out what we can write on our Valentine card. Let's try to understand what stands behind these letters; let's try to find hidden sense. Use picture three in your leaflet.
(sealed
with
a loving kiss)
(your secret admirer) (I trust and love you)
Teacher: Thanks. It was really funny and useful. But if are shy your Valentine card may be anonymous. Now I have one more interesting task for you. You should match the famous couples and the quickliest will get a prize. Use assignment four in your leaflet.

Teacher: And the winner is. And now let's listen to some poems about love. Use assignment five in your leaflet.
Student 1: Henry Wardsworth Longfellow :
THE ARROW AND THE SONG
I shot an arrow into the air, ' It felt to earth, I knew not where; For, so swiftly it flew the sight?
Could not follow it in its flight:
I breathed a song into the
air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong
That it can follow the flight of a song?
Long, long afterward, in an'oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke; And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.
Student 2: A Red, Red Rose (Robert Burns)
O my Luve 's like a red, red rose
That 's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie
That 's sweetly play' d in tune.
As fair art thou my bonnie lass So deep in Iuve am I:
And 1 will
Iuve thee still, my dear Till' a' the seas gang dry:
Till' a l the seas gang dry, my dear
And the rocks melt wi the sun;
And J will Iuve thee still, my dear
While the sands o ' life shall run.
And Tare thee weel, my only Luve And 'fare thee weel, a while!
And J will come again, my Luve.
Tho r it were ten thousand mile.
Student 3: Alexander Pushkin
A magic moment I remember .
I raised my eyes and you were there, A fleeting vision, the quintessence Of all that's beautiful and rare.
A prey to mute despair and anguish, To vain pursuits the world esteems,
Long did I hear your soothing accents,
Long did your features haunt my dreams ;
Time passed. A rebel storm—blast scattered
The reveries that once were mine
And I forgot your soothing accents,
Your features gracefully divine.
In dark days of enforced retirement
I gazed upon grey skies above
With no ideals to inspire me,
No one to cry for, live for, love .
Then came a moment of renascence,
I looked up — you again were there, A feeling vision, the quintessence.
And now my heart throbs with elation,
Hailing the resurrection of
Divine ideals, inspiration,
Life, tears and happiness, and love.
Teacher: Well, let's play and define some more winners. We need to divide our group into two teams. You have to create as many short words using given one as you can and do it as quickly as possible. And the word is SENTIMENTALITY. Hurry up! ...The winners are... But I think that the other team must have chance to revenge. The game is called "Sweet flower". You have to fill in every leaf of this magic flower your associations to the information within its heart. Let's see who is the brightest of you... Well, great work! The winner is... And now let's join our teams to show that such feelings as love and friendship will survive everywhere and save the world. Use assignment six in your leaflet.
