Hi! It's me again. There is plenty to do after school hours, particularly sport which I enjoy most. I love many sports but best of all football. Almost all my friends are in our football team. We trainhard and we often play for the school in various regional youth tournaments. Our coach hastaught us all rigid rules which must be strictly observed. The last game we played ended in a draw — 3:3. And though we know the famous Olympic quotation "The most important thing is not to win, but to take part", we all want to win some day.

I do sport every day. After school on Mondays I go running with my friends for about an hour. Then I go to the swimming pool. Swimming is an excellent way to keep fit. It makes your legs and body strong.

Pete, the greatest footballer of all time, is my idol in football.

The doctor came and asked my sister to strip to the waist. She examined her, felt her pulse and took her temperature. It was the flu. The doctor told my sister to keep to her bed and prescribed some medicine, mustard plasters and hot-water bottle to her feet. Then the doctor put down a slip for x-ray and blood examination. My sister followed the doctor's instructions and in ten days my sister felt much better. She went to the policlinic for a check up. The doctor said she had fully recovered.

Hospital treatment

Jane fell off the chair, hit her head on the floor, and knocked herself unconscious.

If the verb in the Main Clause is in the Past, the verbs in the Subordinate Clause must be in Future in the Past. The auxiliary verbs "should" and "would" are used to form Future in the Past. "Should" replaces "shall" and "would" replaces "will".

Most people understand that it is necessary to fight pollution of the environment. We all should try to do our best in order to make air. Forests and soil cleaner than before.

It concerns everyone who lives in our country. We know that the policy of our state in environment protection is to control air and water pollution but at the same time we think that it cannot be done without everyone's help

Many people are concerned about ecology today because it is of vital importance for humanity. Everybody is talking about pollution nowadays: land pollution, water pollution, air pollution. The things we eat, the places we live in and the air around us are made dirty and unhealthy by machines and factories. Pollution is the result of industrialization and itthreatens everything living: plants, animals, people. It is dangerous for life..

Pollution deprives people of fresh air, clear water and healthy food. The examples are numerous: the waters of the Aral Sea are polluted and it became much less than some years ago, the Caspian sea becomes smaller too, people from Semey suffer from radioactivity.

International cooperation of scientists in enviromental protection has already begun its work. People demand to stop bomb testing and arms race. They want to protect their future.

1. Времена группы Perfect страдательного залога образуются при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в настоящем (Present Perfect), прошедшем (Past Perfect)и будущем времени (Future Perfectи причастия II смыслового глагола по формуле:

to have been + причастие II.

Глагол to have является показателем времени, числа, лица; причастие II является неизменяемой частью этой формы. В вопросительной форме глагол have ставится перед подлежащим. В отрицательной форме not ставится после глагола have.

Holidays

People in every country celebrate holidays. Although "holiday" means "holly day" most holidays in Great Britain are not religious but commemorative in nature and origin. There are only 6 public holidays a year in Great Britain, that is days on which people need not go in for work. They are: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Spring Bank Holiday and Late Summer Bank Holiday. In Scotland, the New Year’s Day is also a public holiday.

Christmas

For many British families Christmas is the most important holiday. Christmas is celebrated in Great Britain on the 25-th of December. Christmas is a religious holiday and one of the happiest holidays of the year, because it is the day that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

People prepare for Christmas weeks before: they buy gifts for their families and friends, choose fur-trees and decorate them with ornaments, colored paper, holly and lights, different toys and candles. There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but perhaps the most important one is Christmas presents. Children wait for Santa Claus who comes to every house and brings presents. Going to bed children leave their stockings and shoes to receive presents the next morning. There are a lot of jokes and fun on Christmas day. Young people like to spend it together in good companies. Family members sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding and Christmas cake. Later in the afternoon they will watch the Queen on TV as she delivers her traditional message to the U.K. and the Commonwealth.

Nauryz

Kazakhstan has many different customs and traditions. The most important Kazakh holiday of the year is "Nauryz" — the Kazakh New Year.

On March 22-nd people from smaller villages come to bigger cities. Families get together to help one another on consructing a "yurt" which is the traditional Kazakh home. Since the Kazakhs were originally nomadic people they had homes that could be easily set up and moved from one place to another. These yurts are made of long curved pieces of wood that are tied together and make the skeleton for this round house. Large pieces of felt are placed over the wood and rags are placed inside the yourt on the floor to keep warmth and protect from cold and rain.

If you enter a yurt on Nauryz you will see that it is decorated with beautiful Kazakh ornaments, rugs and blankets.

As a guest you will sit at a long low table and eat such Kazakh dishes as "karta" (round pieces of dried horse meat), "plov", "baursak", "besbarmak" ("five fingers — a dish which consists of noodles, onions and sheep's meat).

At the theatre

There are not many theatres in my town but they are all very popular with public. I am a theatre lover, too. As for me, I prefer drama to all other theatres, but I like opera and musical comedy, too.

I'll never forget my first visit to the Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I wanted to see the famous bailey "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky. We bought the tickets in advance and came to the theatre half an hour before the show.

At 7 sharp the perfomance began. From the first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The costumes were fine. The dancing and music were thrilling. The ballet seemed to me a fairy-tale. I had never seen anything more wonderful. My friend also enjoyed every minute of it. When the curtain fell at the end of the perfomance there came a storm of applause. It seemed that it would never end. The dancers received call after call. They were presented with large bouquets of flowers. We also applauded enthusiastically. The perfomance was a great success.

В английском языке есть специальное выражение для обозначения повторяющихся действий в прошлом, а также действий, характерных для какого-то лица в прошлом (см.Unit 3).

A farmer once had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple trees which he grew. One day this friend gave the farmer a fine young tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it. If he (plant) it near the road, strangers (steal) the fruit. We know that the sun is the centre of solar system. There are seven planets in the solar system. The Earth is one of them. The Earth as other planets is round. If you look at the Earth from the space you will be able to see lands, seas,. oceans, continents and different countries.

There are four oceans and six continents .the continents are Europe and Asia, Africa, America, Australia, Antarctic, America consists of North America and South America. The continents are very large. Oceans and seas wash them and separate them from each other.

Great Britain

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated in the north-west coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean on the north and north-west and the north-west and the North Sea on the east.

The United Kingdom (UK) consists of four parts. They are: England, Scotland, Wales and Nothern Ireland. The UK lies on the British Isles. There are some 5 500 islands. The two of them are the main islands. They are: Great Britain and Ireland. They are separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. The West coast of the country is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.

The UK is one of the smallest countries in the world. It is twice smaller than France or Spain. The area of the UK is some 244 100 square kilometres. The population of Great Britain is over 57 million. The population lives mostly in towns and cities and suburbs.

Great Britain is not rich in natural resources. Coal and oil are the most of them. The UK is one of the most industrialized countries. Agriculture takes also an important sector in the economy of the country. British people grow wheat, fruit, vegetables, oats.

Great Britain is well known in the world as a nature-loving country. Its people care about the flora and fauna of the British Isles

Kazakhstan

The Republic of Kazakhstan is situated in the Central Asia. The area of Kazakhstan is 2753000 square kilometres. Its population is about 16 million. The population lives mostly in towns and cities and large villages. The largest cities are Almaty, Karaganda, Shimkent, Pavlodar and Astana. Astana is the capital of the Republic. Astana is situated in the central part of the country.

Kazakh is the official language of the country, but it is not the only language which people speak in the country. Russian and other languages are spoken here too.

Kazakhstan borders China, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kirgizia. There is a long border coast line on the Caspian Sea in the Southwest.

There are a few rivers and lakes in Kazakhstan. The four rivers are the main resources of water in the country. They are Irtish, in the east, Syr-Darya in the southwest, Illi in the southeast and Ural in the northwest of the country. The largest lakes are Balhash, Zaisan, Ala-Kol and Tengis. The flora and fauna of the country are different. They depend on the climate of the area. They are richer in the south and poorer in the north.

The climate of the country is strongly continental. It is cold in winter and hot in summer. Rain usually falls in spring and autumn. Snow falls in all areas but not at the same time. In spring green grass and flowers of different colours cover flat lands and hills.

Kazakhstan has well-developed heavy industry in many cities and towns, As the result of the development of heavy industry the country suffers serious environmental problems. Agriculture takes a very important sector in the national economy. The people of the country grow wheat, millet, corn and cotton.

As a sovereign state Kazakhstan has its own national flag and anthem and national traditions and holidays. The national flag of the country consists of a light blue field at the centre of which there is yellow sun framed by the wings of a flying eagle, also in yellow, with a vertical stripe of national ornamentations near the hoist.

London

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. Its population is about 8 million people.

London is situated on the both banks of the River Thames. Today in its full extent Greater London covers 625 square miles. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End They are rather different from one another. The City is the heart of London. Numerous banks, offices and firms are situated there. It is the financial centre of the UK, with many banks, offices and the Stock Exchange. But the City is also a market for goods from all parts of the world. The City extends over an area of about 2,6 square kilometers. About half a million people work there, but less than 6 thousand live there.

Westminster is the historic centre of government. The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. The best hotels, shops, restaurants and theatres are situated there. There are beautiful houses and gardens belonging to the wealthy people. Oxford Street in the West End is the endless shopping area which attracts visitors from all over the world.

The East End is the poorest part of London. There are a lot of factories and docks here. The port of London is also in the East End. The streets in the East End are narrow, the buildings are not attractive. The East End is populated by working class families.

Time

Throughout all of our experience, through every aspect of the world and universe we inhabit, runs that mysterious something called Time.

The clock, "deputy" for the sun and stars, tells us it is time to get up, time to go to school or to work, time to put the roast in the oven or to eat it, time to retire. Setting out on a journey, we check timetables of train or plane against our watches; putting out to sea, we must relate time to distance in order to find our way.

Time, which gives continuity and pattern to life, also brings disruption and death. There is nothing under the sun, or over it, of which we cannot say: "This, too — in time — will pass away". To any person, the most important single unit of time is that of his own stay on earth. Birth, marriage, the arrival of children make milestones which we remember and celebrate with birthdays and anniversaries.

Time is a great teacher, a great healer, a great leveller. It stands still, slips away from us, or flies past us. We can save time or lose it, spend time or waste it (time is money!), even beat it or kill it.

The Future-teller

Ray Douglas Bradbury is one of the most famous modern science fiction writers. He himself, however, prefers to call himself "the future-teller" or "the wizard".R. Bradbury was born on August 20, 1920 in Greentown, U.S.A. His family was poor and he couldn't afford buying books. Once at the age of 12 he wrote his own continuation of the book "The Martian Warrior" by E. Barrouse.

Bradbury loves books and hates those who don't. In 1951 he wrote one of the greatest novels, his famous "Fahrenheit 451" about a new, "sick" society with its cruel anti-human laws, which consists of immoral, souless and empty people, who burn great books, the spiritual treasures of mankind and supress individuals who want to save their human dignity. But Ray Bradbury is an optimist and he finishes the novel with a ray of hope — the human beings will win in their struggle against immorality.

His other great works are about the people exploring space, new planets, about a nuclear war on the Earth, about Death and Life.

All his books make us think about our present and future, about our lives and the great planet Earth we live on.

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley is among the biggest stars of the 20th century. He was born in 1935, in East Tupelo, Mississippi. His family was poor and in search of better life they moved to Memphis, Tennessee.

What influenced Elvis and his music? First, there was his mother Gladys. For his 11thbirthday Elvis wanted a rifle, but Gladys advised him to get a guitar. Then there were religious meetings he went to. They were highly emotional, with singing, gaspel music as well as prayers. Finally Elvis was influenced by the blues music he listened to over the radio.

Elvis became a track driver. One day in 1954, he stopped in at the Memphis Recording Studio and, just for fun, recorded a song. Sam Phillips, head of the studio, heard the song and immediately recognized Elvis's potential He advised Elvis that he should take up singing fof his career. On July 6, 1934 Elvis made his first commercial record. He tried to sing ballads, country songs, but it was rock and roll that made him famous.[Teenagers loved Elvis and rock and roll. The music critics of the time, however, were not impressed. They found Elvis vulgar. Yet his popularity grew. His perfomances were unforgettable.

What do you want to be in Future? — I have often heard this question.

Sometimes it is difficult to answer this question, sometimes not.

Little children usually dream of an unusual profession. Some of them want

to become spacemen, others want to discover new lands, thirds — to dive in deep seas. But most of them want to be famous, so they usually want to become a star — a film star, a pop star, a football star and so on. I used to dream of being a film star as well when I was a little boy.

I don't know for certain what 1 shall do, but I think the best way to prepare myself for a future job is to get a good education. Jobs are changing and constantly appearing. In a few years, there will be more new jobs and nobody knows what they will be. But good education cannot solve the problem alone. It is important to have good health to face difficulties and changes. That's why I pay great attention to sports.
