Arnold Piatt was born in Manchester, England, on 30 1966. He wanted to be a movie star. In 1986, he moved to Lo while he was living there he worked as a waiter in a restaurant in Soho, near the headquarters of some big companies. Eventually, he got a walk-on part in a film c «Road to Ruin» (1991). It was his first and last film part went back to Manchester. While he was living there he trained to be an accountant.







Jean-Claude Van Damme was born in Brussel, Bilgy in 1961. His father encouraged him to learn Karate. At age of eighteen, he opened his own gymnasium. He won European Professional Karate middleweight championship title. In 1981 he went to Los Angeles. He decided to work in films. He spoke no English and supported himself by working it taxi driver and pizza delivery man. In 1985 he appeared in his first film.

The last weekend of August is carnival time in Notting Hill in London. Every year this carnival takes place in the streets: a huge, writing, noisy street party. Musicians and dancers come here from Mil over the world. Two million people come here every year for a really good time.



About 45 different groups of musicians play loud Caribbean musioc. People listen and sing and dance. There are over 400 food stalls here. A lot of the food is Caribbean, too – hot and spicy. People eat and drink, and talk with their friends.



There are clothes stalls here with colorful carnival TV-shirts, I mi .baseball caps and carnival bags.



A lot of the dancers wear colorful costumes – red, yellow, green- all colors. They want to win the Carnival Costume competition

London Sightseeing Tour



London is the capital of the UK. There are a lot of interesting places to see in London. For example: Trafalgar Square. There is a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. He is a national English hero. There is no traffic in the square.



Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is on the top she is at home. Here you can see changing the guard. It happens every day at 11.30 a. m.



House of Parliament is the seat of the British Government. It's a very large building with beautiful towers. Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall. The clock was made under his direction.



Westminster Abbey is a Royal Church. Here you can see many tombs of British Kings and Queens and other famous people, such as: Charles Dickens, Walter Scott, and Thomas Hardy.



Tower of London was a fortress, a royal palace, later a prison. Now it is a museum. Many tourists come to visit London and see all these places.

Money for a Motorbike



It was the month of June and the weather was beautiful. Stuart left school. He was on holiday. But he was not happy. He did not have a motorbike.



Stuart was seventeen years old. He left school, but he did not start work. All his mates started work immediately, but Stuart did not want to work. He wanted a long holiday and he needed a motorbike.



Stuart lived in Leeds - a big city in the North of England. Leeds is a busy city - full of offices, shops and factories. It's not a good place for a holiday.



Martin, a friend of Stuart's, worked in a garage. Martin had a bike for sale. It was a beauty - a Japanese Suzuki. Martin wanted £350 for the bike, but Stuart did not have £350. He didn't have any money.



Stuart went and looked at the bike every day. It was a beauty. He wanted to buy it.



«Where can I find £350?» Stuart asked himself.

Stuart left the garage and walked back home. His house was in Blenheim Street, near the university. There were lots of old, empty houses in Blenheim Street.



The university was one of the biggest in England. The university often bought land and buildings. Most of the old houses in Blenheim Street belonged to the university.



Some of these houses were empty. Stuart often searched through them. Sometimes he found old books and gramophone records.



'One day,' he told himself, 'I'll find something valuable.'



There was a large house at the corner of Blenheim Street. Its owner – a rich, old woman – died a few days ago. The university bought the house immediately.



Now the house was empty. There was wood across the front door and the windows were broken.



Someone looked out of a window. It was a man of about twenty. He had long hair and was wearing a headband. He looked strange.



He was a squatter. Squatters live in old, empty houses and they don't pay any rent.



The stranger wanted to speak to Stuart.



'What does he want?' Stuart asked himself.



Frank walked off slowly down the street. He was about twenty, but he looked much older.



Frank went round the corner and Stuart turned towards the house. It didn't look interesting.



The window was low – quite near the ground. The street was empty. Stuart put one leg over the window sill and looked inside. He quickly climbed into the room.

Animals



Our planet is home to a vast collection of animals. They live everywhere.



Animals are all around us, so it is easy to think that we know exactly what animals are.



But some animals have fur or feathers; others have shells or males, while many have no hard body parts at all. Animals often have eyes, ears and legs.



Animals are also the only living things that have muscles and nerves. Animals with complicated nervous systems, such mammals and birds, react more quickly than any other living things. Such animals as the tiger, black rhino and giant panda are now so rare that they are endangered. In just 10 or 20 year time, the only place to see them may be in zoos.



Animals are in danger for many reasons, and most of these are to do with humans. People collect animals as pets, and hurt them for food and for 'fun'. They destroy their habitats, leaving the animals with nowhere to live. We must look after the animal| we have left, before it is too late.

Dogs and foxes



With their, long legs and sharp teeth, dogs and foxes are good for hunting. They belong to a group of meat-eating mammals. Most of these animals hunt alone, but some grey wolves, catch their food in packs. There are about 36 species of wild dogs and foxes. The best-known member of the family is the domestic dog, which came from the wolf.

Life in the desert looks lifeless. Most of animals hide because it’s hot during the day.



When the sun goes down sand becomes cool. Desert rats come out to look for seeds. Snakes hunt rats. The plants quickly wither and die under the hot sun.



Life in the tropical forest



The trees are always green. It often rains in the forest. It's cool there most animals live in the trees. There are monkeys, tree snakes and birds. There are also frogs, insects there.

Ocean world: whales



Whales are the biggest animals in the sea. They are much bigger than any animals on land. The largest whales are more than 30 meters long.



They live in water, but they are not fish. They have warm blood and they breathe air through a hole in the top of their head. They can stay under water about an hour without breathing.



There are two kinds of whales. One kind has a big mouth, 4 meters in depth. It eats other large sea animals. This kind in called a killer whale. The other kind of whale is much larger than the killer whale. It has no teeth, but has rows of bone in his mouth. They have a very small throat. They cannot swallow anything larger than an apple.

Whales have skin. Their skin is gray or black in colour. Under the skin there is a lot of fat. This fat is used to make oil. The oil is used for many things such as making soap or burning in lamps.



Some whales have oil in their heads.



This oil is valuable.



From 114 to 228 liters of oil can be found in the head of some whales.



Grey whale



This whale is famous for its long migrations. Its main breeding area is off the coast of Mexico, but it spends the summer on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 10,000 km away.



Unlike most large whales, grey whales feed on the seabed.



Southern right whale



Right whales got their names because they swim slowly and float when they are dead. Over the centuries, so many have been killed that the northern right whale is almost extinct.



Whales give birth once every three or four years.



Blue whale



The blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived. Some weigh more than 150 tones. Blue whales have huge mouths, j Females begin to breed when they are about ten years old. They j give birth once every two or three years. In the early 1900s, there were about 200,000 blue whales, now only about 12,000 a re left.

Saquaro cactus



The saguaro is the giant of the cactus family. Its height is often 50 feet (16 m).



It grows very slowly. It grows about one inch per year. The first branch of the cactus does not appear until the plant has grown to a height of 16 feet (5 meters). The first flowers appear when the plant is 50-75 years old.



The largest saquaros are about 200 years old and weigh more than 908 kg!



There is the Saquaro National Monument in the state of Arizona in the USA. It takes 100 years to grow its full 50 feet in height.

British food has a bad reputation in Europe; but traditional home cooked food is as good as European cooking.



A good example is the traditional British Sunday lunch which consists of roast-beef, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. British people eat a lot of meat. Mineral water is not very common. The most popular drink with meals is tea.



British breakfast consists of cornflakes with milk, toasts with marmalade, honey and tea. They eat a large meal at midday. At about 5 o'clock they have tea with bread and butter and cakes. In some families the midday meal is the chief one of the day. And in the evening they have a simple supper an omelet, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs.

The soldier put stone into it. Then he tasted the soup. «It's very good», he sa> «It just needs a bit of salt and pepper». The old woman brought some salt and pepper. After some time he said, «It really need' few vegetables. It's a pity you haven't vegetables»….

The teacher asked some questions about table manners. The student answered them. Match the questions with the answers.





What is the correct way to sit at the table?

What do you do with the spoon after stirring your tea?





What do you say if you dislike the dish very much?

Where do you keep your book or newspaper during a meal, on the table or on your lap?





B. Read the text. Give a title to it.



Some people judge others by their manners at the table.



They even think there is no better way to judge a person's Background than by watching him or her at the table.



The children learn it is impolite to talk while eating or to chew with the mouth open. As they grow older they learn the more obvious manners – not to butter an entire slice of bread, not to take more than one biscuit at a time.
