About Australia in Brief
Australia is a federal state. It is situated in the south – west of the Pacific Ocean. It is washed by the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It has got 6 states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and one internal territory.
Its total area is about 8 mln square km. Australia is the largest island in the world and it is the smallest continent. The Dutch were the first Europeans who visited Australia. In 1770 the English captain James Cook discovered the east coast of Australia.
Nearly 20 mln people live in Australia.
The capital of Australia is Canberra. The city became the capital in 1927.
The state language is English. But there is also German, Italian and Greek.
It is very hot in Australia. There are not heavy rains in summer at all. But they are too heavy in winter. The greatest time for travelling to Australia is May and August or September and December.
There are many rivers and lakes in Australia.

About Sydney in Brief
Sydney is one of the most beautiful places of our planet. It was called in honour of Lord Sydney who was the minister of colonies in England. He sent all prisoners here. If people got there they never came back home.
This city got the status “The most beautiful city in the world” some years running and in 2000 there were the Olympic Games.
Sydney isn’t the capital of Australia, but it is the oldest and the biggest city, it is thought as the “Pearl of the continent”.
Sydney is city of gardens, parks, beaches and there are a lot of places of interest.
Climate.
It is very hot in Sydney. The average temperature is 22 – 24 C. The average temperature of water in summer is 22, 5 C (November – April), in winter is 18 C (June – August).
Population.
Nowadays there are more than 200 nationalities in Sydney. The cleverest, the richest and the most talented people seek to get there.
Interesting facts!
Everything is too expensive in Sydney. A lof of people can’t buy their own house during the whole life. There are a lot of not-free for paying roads.
Places of interest
Harbor Bridge.
The bridge joins the south and northern parts of Sydney. It is the widest bridge in the world. Its length is 503 metres. Nowadays drivers pay 2 dollars for moving on this bridge. It is the greatest place for taking photos. It was opened in 1932.
Sydney Opera House.
It is one of the most famous buildings in the world. This theatre is symbol as Sydney as Australia. It was built by architect John Utzon in 1932. There are about 1000 rooms, 5 theatre halls, 4 restaurants, some bars and small shops there. This Opera House was building during 14 years. It was opened in October, 20, 1973 when Elisabeth II came to Australia. The first opera that was staged – “War and Peace” by Sergey Procofev.
The Tower of Sydney
It was built in 1981. Its height is more than 300 metres. It is the tallest building in Sydney. Inside this tower there are a lot of small shops, restaurants and cafes moving in a circle. You can get place you need by lift or on foot. There are 1504 steps there. Spending 70 minutes there you can enjoy all the magnificent view of Sydney city.
The LG IMAX Sydney Theatre.
It is home to the world’s largest cinema screen. This screen has 8 stories high (its length – 35 metres, its wide – 29 metres). Its surface is covered with silver to get real imagination. There are 300 seats in IMAX.
Sydney Aquarium.
It is the beautiful marine park and the biggest aquarium in the world. Sydney Aquarium contains more than 6 mln liters of water and over 11 thousand of marine animals, among them sharks, fish and many others. It is registered in Guinness’ Book.
The Royal Botanic Garden.
It is the most beautiful place for taking a walk among exotic trees and plants. It was made in British style. It consists of 14 small gardens and it occupies 30 hectares. It was found in 1816 in order to decorate the city.
The Park of Wild Australian Animals.
It is not far from Sydney Aquarium. It is a large territory where typical Australian wild animals live. Visitors can enjoy feeding, seeing and taking photos with some of them. There are more than 6 thousand kinds of animals of Australian fauna.
