Some information
about Edinburgh
It is the heart
and the ancient capital of Scotland and one of the most beautiful cities in
Europe. Scotland is the land of mountains, lakes and romantic castles.
There are many
interesting places and things in Edinburgh. The Forth Bridge is on the main
road to the Highlands, an area of outstanding beauty, with a romantic past, and
it is home of wildlife of all kinds.
The beautiful
nature of Scotland and Edinburgh influenced Conan Doyle greatly.
Some information
about Conan
Doyle
Conan Doyle was sent
to the Roman
Catholic
Jesuit preparatory school
at
the age of 9. He
then went on to Stonyhurst
College
and left school in
1875. From 1876 to 1881, he studied medicine at the University
of Edinburgh
and received a medical degree. While studying, he also began writing short
stories; his first published story appeared in Chambers's
Edinburgh Journal before he was 20.
Conan Doyle set up
an independent medical practice but it was not very successful; while waiting
for patients, he began writing stories. His first significant work appeared in
1887 and featured the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes. So in 1890 he abandoned
his medical practice and devoted his time to writing.

Listening
Listen to the funny story
about Conan Doyle and a taxicab driver; make up dialogues and role-play them.
A Joke on Conan Doyle.
Once a French taxicab
driver had driven Sir Conan Doyle from the station to a hotel. The driver
decided to play a joke on him. When the driver received his fare he said: “Merci,
Mr. Conan Doyle.” “Why, how do you know my name?” asked Sir Arthur. “Well, Sir,
I have seen in the papers that you were coming from the South of France to Paris.
Your general appearance told me that you were English; your hair had been
clearly cut by a barber of the south of France. I put these indications
together and guessed at once that it was you.” That is very remarkable. Have you
other evidence to go upon?”
“Well”, said the driver,
“there was also the fact that your name was on your luggage.”
Speaking
and writing. Pair work. Make up a dialogue
between Conan Doyle and the cab taxi driver and role play it. Here is an
example:
Cab taxi driver:
|
Conan Doyle:
|
Hello, Sir, can I help
you?
|
Yes, sure. Take me to
the hotel, please.
|
Oh, yes, Sir, with
pleasure!

Merci, Mr. Conan Doyle.
|
Why, how do you know my
name?
|
Well, Sir, I have seen
in the papers that you were coming from the south of France
to Paris.
|
It’s very interesting.
Go on!
|
Your general appearance
told me that you were English.
|
Did it?
|
Besides, your hair had
been clearly cut by a barber of the south of France.
|
You are very attentive,
I should say!
|
I put these indications
together and guessed at once that it was you.
|
Great! You have no
other evidence to go upon?
|
Well, there was also
the fact that your name was on your luggage.
|
You are really a great
detective!
