  Charles Dickens was born at Landport, in Portsea, on February 7, 
  1812, to John and Elizabeth Dickens. He was the second of their eight children. His father was a clerk in the Navy Pay-office, and was temporarily on duty in the neighbourhood. Very soon after the birth of Charles Dickens, however, the family moved for a short period to Norfolk Street, Bloomsbury, and then for a long period to Chatham, 
  in Kent, which thus became the real home, and for all serious purposes, the native place of Dickens. His early years seem to have been idyllic, although he thoughthimself a "very small and not-over-particularly-taken-care-of boy"

  On Sundays, Dickens and his sister Frances ("Fanny") were allowed out from the Royal Academy of Music and spent the day at the Marshalsea. (Dickens later used 
  the prison as a setting in Little Dorrit). To pay for his boardand to help his family, Dickens was forced to leave school and began working ten-hour days at Warren's Blacking Warehouse, on Hungerford Stairs, near the present Charing Cross railway station. He earned six shillings a week pasting labels on blacking.

  In 1836, Dickens accepted the job of editor of Bentley's Miscellany, a position he held for three years, until he fell out with the owner. At the same time, his success as a novelist continued, producing Oliver Twist (1837–39),Nicholas Nickleby (1838–39), The Old Curiosity Shop and, finally, Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty aspart of the Master Humphrey's Clock series (1840–41)—all published in monthly instalments before being made into books.

  He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.

  Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison.
  Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.

  Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers.
  Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humour, satire, and keen observation of character and society.
  His novels, most published in monthly or weekly instalments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication.
  Dickens improved the character with positive features. His plots were carefully constructed, and he often wove elements from topical events into his narratives.Masses of the illiterate poor chipped in ha'pennies to have each new monthly episode read to them, opening up and inspiring a new class of readers.

  Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations are also frequently adapted, and, like many of his novels, evoke images of early Victorian London. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. Dickens has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton—for his realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism.

  Charles Dickens travelled a lot and never stopped writing.
  In 1842, Charles Dickens visited America. His reception was somewhat colder than that which usually greeted him – already a successful author in both Britain and the U.S. This lack of enthusiasm from the Americans was partly due to his criticism of the pirating of English books in that country and partly due to his outspoken distaste for the custom of slavery in the southern states.

  Dickens's biographer Claire Tomalin regards him as the greatest creator of character in English fiction after Shakespeare.Dickensian characters are amongst the most memorable in English literature, especially so because of their typically whimsical names. The likes of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit, Oliver Twist, The Artful Dodger, Fagin, Bill Sikes, Pip, Miss Havisham, Sydney Carton, Charles Darnay, David Copperfield, Mr. Micawber, Abel Magwitch,Daniel Quilp, Samuel Pickwick, Wackford Squeers, and Uriah Heep are so well known as to be part and parcel of British culture, and in some cases have passed into ordinary language: a scrooge, for example, is a miser - or someone who dislikes Christmas festivity.

  Dickens was buried in the heart of London, in Westminster Abbey in the Poet’s Corner. His grave was left open for several days, and thousands of people came to put flowers around his tombstone.
