1. About Mr. Michael Bell

2. The Money Box

3. Shopkeepers in Grimsby

4. The Midland Bank

5. Friday Evening

It was Friday evening and shopkeepers in Grimsby came to the Midland Bank to put their money into the night safe. But later that evening the night safe disappeared and with it 4,000 pounds. Every Friday evening the shopkeepers put the money they take during the week into the night safe. They don't want to leave it in their shops, but the bank closes early. The night safe is outside on the wall and the money they put into it goes into the bank. But on this Friday evening the people who came along the street with their bags full of money dropped them not into a night safe, but into a box that belonged to Mr. Michael Bell.

Mr. Bell, who makes radios and televisions, had the idea when he saw two men outside the bank one evening. When he came home from work, the two men, who were, apparently shopkeepers, were putting some money into the night safe. He made the box at home and painted it. When it was ready, he took it to the bank and hung it on the wall next to the night safe.

On the front of the night safe he painted the words: "Please use the new night safe. This one is out of order." Then he went round the corner and waited for the shopkeepers to arrive. He listened while they dropped their bags of money into the box. When it was full, he quickly took it down and went home with 4,000 pounds.

Mr. Bell is very-clever and his idea was good, but not perfect. Now he has time to think of other ideas. He's in prison for stealing.

a) Three Great Discoveries

b) Newton’s Parents

c) Gravitation

d) Newton’s Schooldays

e) Newton’s Investigation in the Nature of Light

f) A Monument to Newton

NEWTON (1642-1727)

  1. Newton, one of the greatest scientists of all time, was born on the 25th of December 1642, at the little village of Woolsthorpe in Lincolnshire.  His father was a farmer and had died before Newton was born. His mother was a clever woman for whom Newton retained a great love all his life.

  2. Newton's schools days were not remarkable. He studied mathematics at Cambridge and took his degree there in 1665. Then the university was closed because of the danger of plague and Newton went home for eighteen months, which was a most important period, for during that time Newton, between the ages of 22 and 24, made his three great discoveries - the discovery of the differential calculuses, of the nature of white light, and the law of gravitation.

These three great discoveries, which have changed the course of thought, have also influenced the course of science from that day until our days.

  1. Newton had always been interested in the problems of light. Most people have seen the colours of a rainbow reflected in a drop of dew but it was Newton who, by his experiments, snowed that white light is made up of these colours.

  2. It is interesting how the idea, which led to the discovered of the laws governing the forces of gravitation first came to him. Once, as he sat at the garden the fall of the apple made him think: why must that apple always descend perpendicularly to the ground? Why must it not go sidewards or upwards, but usually, to the earth’s centre? Certainly, the reason is that the earth draws it. An apple falling was not an unusual event, but only Newton drew from his sight the inspiration and particular demonstration, which led to a great scientific discovery. By degrees he began to apply this property of gravitation to the motion of the earth and the heavenly bodies round the sun.

  3. Newton died when he was 84, and was buried in Westminster Abbey, where his monument is today.

FROM THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND

  1. Many hundred years ago (about the 4th century before our era) the country we now call England was known as Britain, and the people who lived there were the Britons. They belonged to the Celtic race; the language they spoke was Celtic. Their culture, that is to say their way of thinking and their understanding of nature, was very primitive.

  2. In the first century before our era Britain was conquered by the powerful state of Rome. The Romans lived on the peninsula, which is now called Italy and their language was Latin. They were very clever at making hard roads, building bridges and many-storeyed houses. The Romans thought a great deal of fighting and they usually managed to win most of the battles they fought. The Romans had heard very much about Britain from travelers and among other things they were greatly interested to learn what valuable metals could be found in Britain.

  3. Finally they decided to occupy the island. The Romans sailed across the sea in galleys and the general who commanded them was Julius Caesar. Caesar wrote many interesting accounts of Britain. His soldiers were clever enough, but it was not so easy to conquer the Britons, and the Romans had to encamp troops all over the country.

  4. It is from these camps that the English cities later arose. Many things the Romans taught the Britons were given Latin names. They made the Britons build roads and bridges. But the Romans and the natives of Britain did not become one nation (never mixed one with the other); all that the Romans wanted was to make the Britons work for them.
