The house that Jack
built».
(Jiří (Georg)
Polivko, 1858–1933).

The house that Jack
This is the house that Jack built.
This is the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the rat,
That ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.

Our report consists of 3
parts: theory, practice and conclusion. In the part of the theory I try to
research the history of the question and the definition”accumulative
fairy-tales”.
In the part of the practice
the cross-cultural comparative analysis is done in the example of the Yakut
fairy-tale “An old woman Taal-Taal”, Russian fairy tale “Turnip” and English
song «The house that Jack built».
In the conclusion the role of
the repetition in the folklore and the possibility of using cumulative fairy
tales in the studying of the foreign language and culture is done.
The identical fairy-tales
(today they say about 75% fairy-tales plot are alike) are told in Europe,
Africa, Asia and America.
An accumulation is a cyclical repetition and
broadening of plot parts, it is one of the main method in the fairy-tale
composition, because an accumulation is any action which is thrice repeated,
for example: a hero is checking his strength three times with the help of a
sword is an accumulation, a hero is visiting a copper, silver, gold palaces is
an accumulation, three times fight with a dragon is an accumulation, because
every time an action becomes more stronger, more beautiful, every fight demands
more efforts than a previous effort.
The practical part. Cross-cultural comparative
analysis.
Let
us begin with the text of the Yakut fairy-tale “The Old Woman Taal-Taal”, which
is based on the very wide-spread plot “Who is the mightiest?” from its logical
structure point of view. The tale is built on the principle of accumulation,
consisting of the same syntactical parts, the form of “question-answer”. One by
one different characters: ice, the sun, cloud, wind, mountain and a mouse get
connected to the conversation with the main character, and their main aim is to
know who is the mightiest in the world. Let us see the passage from the tale,
hear we will see the first accumulation examples and know something about the
plot. The first question is addressed to the ice, where she is frozen:
-3-
- Ice-Ice, are you the
mightiest in the world?
- Sure, I am the mightiest.
- Ice-Ice, if you are the
mightiest, why the sunrays make to melt?
- It means that the sun is the
mightiest!
- Sun-Sun, , are you the
mightiest in the world?
- Yes, I am the mightiest!
- Sun-Sun, if you are the
mightiest in the world, why the cloud shadows you?
- It means that the cloud is
the mightiest!
Next this fairy tale links
has the same sequence: question-answer-question-answer. They make a repetition
in the plot and this repetition makes different narrative links in the
fairy-tales.
“A turnip” is so called twice
chain fairy-tale. First; its heroes make a chain from bodies:
grandfather-grandmother-granddaughter-dog-cat-mouse.
Secondly, the tale makes a
word-chain: the grandmother after the grandfather, the grandfather after the
turnip, pulling and pulling... the granddaughter after the grandfather, the
grandmother after the grandfather and the grandfather after the turnip, pulling
and pulling…
Then,
let us analyze the English folk song “The house that Jack built”, for example,
let us take some passages from it:
This is the house that Jack built.
This is the malt
That
lay in the house that Jack built.
This is
the rat,
That
ate the malt
That
lay in the house that Jack built.
-4-
Conclusion
It is obvious, that the
meaning of the repetition usage is not in the plot the entire characters act in
the same way, imitating each other. At the same time cumulative tales are not
really boring, they take listeners’ attention by their typical pecularitist:
chain building.
Most scientists-folklorists
thought that the chainlike tales’ creators were people with childish
consciousness, the simple societies.
The
way of thinking of the modern human being needs the information in the other
way, but cumulative tales still take attention? They are like “the gold supply”
of human being’s way of thinking. That is why they are called relict tales; they bring to us not the ancient mode of life,
or the ancient beliefs, but the ancient ways of thinking.

The identical fairy-tales( today they say about 75% fairy-tales plot coincidence) are told in Europe,
Africa, Asia and America. There are some scientific works which explains this
phenomena and works which try to create the common fairy-tale classification.
An accumulation is a cyclical repetition and broadening of plot

becomes more stronger, more beautiful, every fight demands more efforts than a
previous effort.
However, among fairy-tales
there are such ones where an accumulation takes on a plot meaning. That’s why
they are called accumulative stories. In common, an accumulative structure of
the folk tale is - scenes are in a row, a narration goes from the beginning to
the end and it is impossible to go this way passing repetitions.
The practical part. Cross-cultural comparative
analysis.
Let us begin with the text of the Yakut folk tale “The
Old Woman Taal-Taal”, which is based on the very wide-spread plot “Who is
the mightiest?” from its logical structure point of view. The tale is built on the

“A turnip” is so called twice
chain fairy-tale. First, its heroes make a chain from bodies:
grandfather-grandmother-granddaughter-dog-cat-mouse. At first it seems that the
chain is made up by chance the turnip is strongly in the ground, and those
people who are trying to pull it, call new and new members of the family and
pets. Why they don’t call for a cow, for example, it is also a pet? Don’t you
know? If you ask a child this question, he will answer: it is too big, it is of
wrong size! If it will stand near the grandmother, it will be the wrong part of
the pyramid and break the chain. By the way, the chain is very interesting,
because there a man and a woman, animal and a human being, a friend and an
enemy can find the places next to each other. Secondly, the tale makes a
word-chain: the grandmother after the grandfather, the grandfather after the
turnip, pulling and pulling... the granddaughter after the grandfather, the
grandmother after the grandfather, the grandfather after the turnip, pulling
and pulling…. It means that the name of every
new member is laid on the already existing names, which are repeated for many
times in the tale. We understand that all the words and actions of the
characters in the tale were laid on straight stick like toy pyramid details -
beginning from big parts to small ones (and on the contrary), or made a chain –
the part coming after the part.
Then, let us analyze the English
folk song “The house that Jack built”, for example, let us take some
passages from it:
This is the house that Jack built,
This is the malt
That
lay in the house that Jack built.
This is

That
ate the malt
That
lay in the house that Jack built.
Conclusion
It
is obvious, that the meaning of the repetition usage is not in the plot (the
entire characters act in the same way, imitating each other). At the same time
cumulative tales are not really boring, they take listeners’ attention by their
typical peculiarity: chain building. When the new member or the new part
appears (the new information in the tale or the new character) it will be
connected with the preceding one. In the same way, laying the information on
each other and connecting the preceding information with the existing, children
learn the surrounding world. Lack of experience, not still developed abstract
and logic way of thinking make them not to think but to act imitating others.
Overcoming the distance “abc”, they make
their way by short cuts, like: from “a” to “b”, from “b” to “c.” Probably, that
is why children are the best listeners of the cumulative tales. And there is
the question, who are the authors? Most scientists-folklorists thought that
the chainlike tales’ creators were people with childish consciousness, the
simple societies.
The
way of thinking of the modern human being needs the information in the other
way, but cumulative tales still take attention. They are like “the gold supply”
of human being’s way of thinking. That is why they are called relict tales, they bring to us not the ancient mode
of life, or the ancient beliefs, but the ancient ways of thinking. They also
learn us how the tied speech has appeared: with
the help of typical repetitions, making the lexis more rich.
In such a way: the new
character (the new information) appears – it is given the name (it is marked)
and add it to the already existing ones. Children learn the mother language in
the same way, remembering not only separate words, but remembering the whole
speech structures, and trying to make more long structures on their basis.
