The
Roman army marched deep into the countryside. They made alliances with some
tribes and conquered others one by one. Slowly, they drove their enemies into
the mountains of Wales and Scotland. The Romans built forts in Wales and in the
north of England to protect their land. The fierce, unconquered tribes (Picts
and Scots) hiding in the mountains and valleys of Scotland raided northern
England again and again. The Emperor Hadrian decided to build a wall right
across the country to control them.
The Wall
Hagurd was small for his age. He lived with his father
and mother and seven brothers and a sister. Their house was small with only one
room. Close by was an army camp, full of Roman' -soldiers.
"Why are the soldiers here?" said Hagurd to
his father. "The soldiers are here because the wail is here," said
his father. The stone wall was very big. A square fort was built into the wall
near the army camp. There were always soldiers on the wall. Hagurd looked at
the wall again. "Why is the wall here?" he said to his father.
"The wall is here to keep us safe," said his father. "The
Emperor Hadrianus built it. Your grandfather and I dug the stones out of the
hill. All the men of the village helped. Then we carried them here and built
the wall. It was a long time ago."
"But why is it there?" asked Hagurd.
"It is for the Romans," said his father. "It is not for us. Do
as I say. Stay away from it!" But Hagurd wanted to know what was on the
other side of the wall. That night all the family sat round the fire. Father
and Mother were talking. Nobody was watching, so Hagurd left the house. He was
going to see the wall. Soon he came up to the wall. The wall was high. A Roman
soldier was marching along it. The soldier was in armour, а sword hung from
his belt, and he carried a short spear. His helmet shone in the sun. The
soldier looked down at Hagurd and shouted at him, but the boy didrj't
understand the words. He mean to say, "Go away! Stay away from the wall!"
It began to get dark. Hagurd was frightened. So he stayed close to the wall.
His father had said that the wail was there to keep him safe.
Soon the moon rose. Hagurd could see in the moonlight.
But he could not see when the clouds covered the moon. He did not know where he
was.
Hagurd crawled over to the wall. His father had helped
to build the wall. The wall would keep him safe.
Slowly Hagurd climbed up the wall. He knew how to
climb. He liked to climb trees. At last he reached the top of the wall. Then he
stood up. He looked over on the other side. The moon came from behind a black
cloud. He saw low, dark hills. There were not many trees. There were not many
bushes either. Hagurd could see no sheep and no cows. It was a very empty
place.
Then Hagurd saw something. It looked like a flash of
white light. It flashed and went again.
The cloud passed and Hagurd looked again. Soon he saw
another flash. This time it was nearer. There were dark shadows there. What
could it be?
Suddenly something touched him. His heart jumped. He
looked up. There stood a Roman soldier, it was the soldier he had met before.
The soldier's sword was touching Hagurd's neck.
The soldier said something. But the words were
strange. Hagurd could not understand them. Then he remembered the flashing
light, He grabbed the soldier's arm and pointed. The soldier shook his head. He
did not understand. He took Hagurd's arm and shook him. His face looked angry.
Hagurd struggled free, took the soldier's arm and
pointed. The soldier turned and looked. Moonlight flashed on something. The
soldier spoke sharply. He took Hagurd's arm and they both ran. N6w more
soldiers came. There was a lot ofnoise and shouting. Suddenly two or three
spears rattled against the stones. Hagurd was frigh¬tened.
The soldier pointed left and right. Hagurd strained
his eyes to see. He could see soldiers running. They were Roman soldiers. Some
were running from the fort on the right. Others were running from the fort on
the left. The soldier moved his arms like pincers. The Romans wanted to trap
the enemy.
Hagurd peeped over the wail again. There were shouts
and the noise of fighting. At last the noise died away. Then a Roman officer
came up to them. He could speak like Hagurd. "What is your name?" he
asked. "Where do you live? What are you doing here?"
Hagurd answered all the questions. "You are a
brave boy," said the officer. "Those flashes were made by our
enemies. It was the moon glinting on their swords. They wanted to climb up the
wall, kill some of my men and burn some of the houses. But you saved us
all!"
The officer took
Hagurd home. He told Hagurd's father all about it. Hagurd's father looked very
cross. "Why did you run away?" he said. "I told you about the
wall. I told you not to go there. You are a silly little boy! That wall is for
the Romans. It is not for us!"
But. the officer said, "Do not be cross, am
very glad that he ran away. Hagurd saw the enemy in time. "He saved the
town,"
