WEATHER AND MY MOOD
1. Rain, snow, hail,
sleet, frost and dew are all part of the weather. So are cold
waves, heat waves, clouds, breezes, gales, thunderstorms and hurricanes.
2. We all feel bad weather,
although some may feel it more than others.
3. Going to a warm place in
the middle of winter can be a huge mood booster.
4. Pleasant weather has been proven
to improve moods and memory.
5. However, extremely hot
weather can actually make us feel more tired and sluggish, lowering our overall
mood.
6. The best temperature for
humans is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit because it is the most temperate.
7. That explains why people
in southern California are so happy all the time.
8. To improve mood, a person
must spend at least 30 minutes outside in warm, sunny weather.
9. Since ancient times,
people have associated certain weather conditions with increases in pain
or with feeling unwell.
10. And it is not just the
elderly or the sick that are affected, as stress and our modern
lifestyle has made us all more susceptible.
11. In 1999, the Weather Channel
surveyed its viewers and found that 70 percent of Americans believed the
weather influenced their wellbeing.
12. A more scientific
approach to a survey in Germany concluded that more than half of the German
population believes that there is some connection between weather and health.
13. We know well that the
weather influences are more than a feeling, because we talk about it more often
than we probably realize: “The heat is killing me. I can’t stand the
cold. This wind is driving me crazy.”
14. Our gradual detachment
from nature and our modern lifestyle, with air conditioners, humidifiers
and heaters has made us more sensitive to environmental
influences.
15. European
scientists have compiled a list of the symptoms of those who are
“weather sensitive.”
16. These include: increased
irritability and aggressiveness, anxiety, depression, listlessness,
fatigue, lack of concentration; sleep disorders; headache and migraine;
heart and circulation irregularities; nausea; dizziness; scar
pain or "phantom pain"; rheumatic pain.
17. Nevertheless, even though
the weather has the potential to impact your mood, that doesn’t mean you
have to let it.
18. This is because YOU – and
not the weather – ultimately control your mood.
