Tasks are: ■ to determine the main problems; ■ to give some advice to keep our environment clean; ■ to show different ways to solve of ecological problems. Introduction Aim is: ■ to introduce global environmental problems and show ways to help the Earth.
Role of man in ecology Our Earth is a beautiful home for living beings, common for all the humanity forever. The number of the planet’s population is increasing constantly, but the technical progress is not only for the people’s welfare, but it also threatens the life itself. When people pursue great profits, they often act unwisely - destroy nature, pollute the environment. The poisoning of air, land and oceans is the fastest spreading disease of civilization.
Carbon dioxide ■ the increase of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere; ■ over the past 100 years carbon dioxide has increased from 260 ppm to 350 ppm; ■ raising the temperature of the earth through this process knowing as the greenhouse effect: the melting of polar ice caps; change the climate regionally and globally; alter natural vegetation; affect crop production; raise sea levels.
Types of pollution There are different types of pollution: water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution and nuclear pollution.
Acid rain Acid rain corrodes: ■ metals; ■ stone buildings. Acid rain injures and kills: ■ vegetation; ■ forest; ■ lakes; ■ soils.
The hole in the ozone layer ■ ultraviolet radiation ■ damage cells of living things – plants, animals and people ■ chlorine and bromine. 1979 2008
Nuclear pollution ■ in Windscale in Britain, ■ in Three Mile Island in the USA, ■ Chernobyl in Ukraine. Nuclear pollution cannot be seen but its effects can be terrible.
Deforestation “A nation that destroys it's soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.” Franklin D. Roosevelt ■ disappearance of forests ■ cut down ■ fire ■ lack of oxygen
Air pollution ■ Cars ■ trucks ■ buses ■ airplanes ■ smoke ■ gas ■ dirt
Water Pollution ■ water problems ■ chemicals ■ the rivers and lakes ■ the plants and fish ■ pesticides ■ spreading a lot of diseases
Global warming Each time we burn gasoline, oil, coal, or natural gas, more carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is what causes the temperate of the Earth to rise, and creates many problems for the environment.
Global warming disastrous effects ■ Vanishing islands ■ No more snow ■ Rising tides This glacier is disappearing at a rate of 200 metres per year.
Global warming disastrous effects ■ Tree-eating wood beetles destroy forests ■ Damaging storms, droughts and related weather phenomena
The WWF mission Simply put: we're in the business of saving our one and only planet. The WWF was founded in 1961. At first it was a small group of people who wanted to save animals and plants. Today the WWF was raised over 35 million for conservation projects and has created or given support to National parks in 5 continents. It has helped 30 mammals and birds to survive. There are a lot of nature centres in all the countries of the world, such as: “Friends of the Earth”, “Green peace”, “Trust” and many others.
■ Don’t buy drinks in plastic bottles. ■ Save your family newspapers. Find out how to recycle paper in your area. ■ Save water. If there is the leaky tap in your house, get someone to fix them. ■ Turn off the lights when you leave the room. ■ Turn off the TV or stereo when you are not watching or listening. ■ Unplug things that glow in the dark. ■ Don’t cut wild flowers. ■ Don’t kill wild animals. ■ Use energy saving products. ■ Use public transport instead of a car . ■ Buy or make reusable bags to go shopping with.

It’s not too late to help the Earth! “If you don’t think about the future you will not to have it” John Galsworthy
