Shakespeare’s work is the top of the English literature

William Shakespeare was great English playwright, dramatist and poet who lived during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Shakespeare is considered to be the greatest playwright of all time. No other writer’s plays have been produced so many times or read so widely in so many countries as his. His works were used as a form of entertainment for the rich and poor. His plays appealed to the masses and survived the hands of time, but little is known about man who wrote so beautifully. So his life remains a mystery to us. Shakespeare's' poems and plays show his love of nature and rural life which reflects his childhood. What makes Shakespeare the most famous playwright of all time? I’ll start by saying that Shakespeare’s insight into human nature and his gift for using words make him the most famous playwright of all time. It must be admitted that Shakespeare gave the English language many phrases and sayings, which English speakers still use every day. Often, they don’t realize these words came from Shakespeare’s plays or poems. For example:

1) “To be or not to be: that is the question.” Быть или не быть: вот в чем вопрос.

2) “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Весь мир театр. В нем женщины, мужчины – все актеры.

3) Love is blind Любовь слепа.

4) “Neither a borrower nor a lender be.” В долг не давай и взаймы не бери.

5) “Life is not all cakes and ale.” Жизнь прожить – не поле перейти.

6) “Much ado about nothing.” Много шума из ничего.

7) “Brevity is the soul of wit. ”Краткостьсестра таланта.

8) “All is well that ends well.” Все хорошо, что хорошо кончается.

The world has admired and respected many great writers, but only Shakespeare has generated such enormous continuing interest. Shakespeare’s plays are usually divided into their major Categories. These are comedy, tragedy and history. There are many reasons as to why William Shakespeare is so famous. He is generally considered to be both the greatest dramatist he world has ever known as well as the finest poet who has written in the English language. Many reasons can be given for Shakespeare's enormous appeal. His fame basically is from his great understanding of human nature. He was able to find universal human qualities and put them in a dramatic situation creating characters that are timeless. Yet he had the ability to create characters that are highly individual human beings. Their struggles in life are universal. Sometimes they are successful and sometimes their lives are full of pain, suffering, and failure.

Shakespeare had a tremendous influence on culture and literature throughout the world. He contributed greatly to the development of the English language. Many words and phrases from Shakespeare's plays and poems have become part of our speech. Shakespeare's plays and poems have become a required part of education in the United States. Therefore, his ideas on subjects such as romantic love, heroism, comedy, and tragedy have helped shape the attitudes of millions of people. His portrayal of historical figures and events has influenced our thinking more than what has been written in history books.

Shakespeare's plays are usually divided into three major categories. These are comedy, tragedy, and history. Three plays which are in the category of comedy are "The Comedy of Errors", "The Taming of the Shrew", and "The Two Gentlemen of Verona". Three plays which are in the category of tragedy are "Romeo and Juliet", "Titus Andronicus", and "Julius Caesar". In the category of history, three plays are "Henry V", "Richard II", and "Richard III".

William Shakespeare is also considered to be the father of sonnets. A sonnet is a poetic form which originated in Italy; Giacomo Da Lentini is credited with its invention.

The term sonnet is derived from the Italian word “sonetto” ( sonet’ a little poem, from ‘son’ song, from Latin ‘sonus’ a sound). By the thirteenth century it signified a poem of fourteen lines that follows a strict rhyme scheme and specific structure. Conventions associated with the sonnet have evolved over its history. Traditional theme of his sonnets is love poems addressed to a woman. The influence of Shakespeare’s work in literature, as everyone knows, is both widespread and important. But his mark is also upon the very vocabulary which we use. Pay attention to the last sentence of sonnet, number 18.

So long as men can breath or eyes can see,

So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

It is the main idea of the sonnet.

All in all he wrote more than 37 plays, 154 sonnets, two long poems and a great number of other poems. The main genres of Shakespeare’s works were tragedies and comedies. Almost all his literary works have been translated into more than 30 languages. Although a real acknowledgement of his works and high approval took place only in the 19th century. The era of Romanticism regarded Shakespeare as a genius and a lot of other writers got inspiration from his works. In the 20th century many of his works were adapted and screened. Among them such plays as “Much ado about nothing”, “Measure for measure”, “Romeo and Juliet” and many others. His literature still remains highly claimed and appreciated. Thousands of theatres stage his plays throughout the world and lots of film companies shoot new versions of already known Shakespeare stories.

William Shakespeare is ‘The Bard of Avon'. His works are often divided into four periods beginning with what is referred to as an experimental period starting around 1591 and ending around 1593 which includes Titus Andronicus, Love's Labour's Lost, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors and The Taming of the Shrew. The second period ending around 1601, marks the establishment of Shakespeare and includes the tragedy Romeo and Juliet, the comedies, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer-Night's Dream, Much Ado about Nothing, The Merry Wives of Windsor and the history plays, Henry IV, Parts I and II, Henry V, Richard II, King John and Julius Caesar. The third period ending around 1610 marks perhaps the apex of Shakespeare's work with the tragedies, Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear but also comedies such as Twelfth Night, All's Well that Ends Well and the epic history play, Antony and Cleopatra. The final period ends around 1611 with the plays, Cymbeline, Henry VIII and romances such as The Tempest and The Winter's Tale. Shakespeare was a leading member of the group from 1594 for the rest of his career. 1594 had produced at least six of Shakespeare’s plays; During Shakespeare’s life, there were two monarchs who ruled England. They were Henry the eighth and Elizabeth the first. Both were impressed with Shakespeare, which made his name known.

So the world travels to the Avon, a river which Shakespeare never mentioned by name. There is no other such literary or theatrical pilgrimage in the world. The Shakespeare Wonder is unique in its drawing power. No other writer has better served the tourist agency, the hotel manager as well as the publishers and printer, actor and manager. Shakespeare stands alone in his spawning of cranks and bores as well as erudite scholars and devotees of genius. Shakespeare, like every other great man, has been the object of much unintelligent, and misdirected adulation, but his greatness, so far from suffering diminution, grows more apparent with the passage of time and the increase of study. Shakespeare is considered to be the greatest playwright of all time. No other writer’s plays have been produced so many times or read so widely in so many countries as his.
