All the people enjoy summer holidays
very much. It is a great pleasure to have a rest after a whole year of hard
work or study. In summer all students have holidays. They go to the sea, rest
there and gain strength for a new academic year.
Many people like to travel during
their summer holidays. Some people go abroad to see new countries, some people
prefer to go to the country-side to enjoy country-life far from noise and fuss
of big cities.
Some people like to spend their
holidays in cities, visiting theatres, museums and going sightseeing. But a
great number of people go to the seaside in summer.
I like to have rest at the seaside
best of all. I do not like crowds when I am on holiday. My family and I always
have our holiday on the coast. Sea and sunshine, that is what we look forward
to every summer. Hotels at the large seaside towns are rather expensive, so we
usually go to a holiday camp.
Last year we spent our holidays in
such a camp. Each day was full of small joys. We swam in the sea, lay in the
sun, played different games and had a wonderful time. We lived there for about
a month and did not even notice when the time came for us to return home. The
time flew very quickly. It was a wonderful rest.
Big Ben is a bell in the clock tower
in London. Name. There are two versions of the origin of the name of the tower.
The first version says that Big Ben was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who ran
the casting of the bell. Another says that the heariest bell at the moment
(13.7 tonns) got its name after Benjamin County, a very famous boxer in the
heavyweight division at the time. Construction. The tower was built on the
design of English architect Augustus Pugin in 1858. For the first time the
clock was wound on May 21, 1859. Officially, the tower was named as "The
Clock Tower of Westminster Palace". Managingthe Clock. When the clock on
the tower rush or lag (the error is smal - only 1.5-2 seconds) an old English
penny is placed on the pendulum. Putting or a coin the superintendent manages
to get the precision of the machinery. Now Big Ben is one of the most famous
constructions of the UK.
Sports and games
We are sure you are all interested
in sport. Many of you certainly play such games as volleyball or football,
basketball or tennis. People who play a game are players. Players form teams
and play matches with other teams — their opponents. Two players playing with
each other are partners. Each team can lose or win. In a football match players
try to score as many goals as they can.
Most matches take place in large
stadiums.
Athletics is the most popular sport.
People call it 'the queen of all sports'. It comprises such kinds of sports as:
running (for different distances), jumping (long and high jumps) and others.
From time to time international
championships and races (horse-races, motor-races, cycle-races) take place.
Representatives of various countries can win a gold, silver or bronze medal.
Such great championships in sport are organized every four years and we call
them Olympic Games. Only the best may take part in them.
There are so many kinds of sports,
such as cycling, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, skating, skiing, rowing,
yachting and many more in which you can take an active part or just be a
devoted fan.
