Introduction
Great Britain is a country where English dominates, here it has the status of the state language. However, it is not the only one, there are many other languages in the country that peacefully coexist with the state language. In addition, the English language itself in the UK is divided into several dialects, which can differ dramatically from each other lexically. Even the speed of speech varies in different regions of the United Kingdom, for example, in Northern Ireland and Scotland, the speed of speech is much higher than in other regions

The main language
The main language of the United Kingdom is British English.
The English with all its dialects is used by about 55 million people across the UK. It belongs to the West Germanic type of languages and is used throughout the country.
The Welsh is spoken in the western part of Great Britain – mainly in Wales, the former Celtic kingdom. It is spoken by more than 600 thousand people. Welsh belongs to the Celtic languages and belongs to the British group.

The Scottish (Scots) is the traditional language of the southern and eastern parts of Scotland. This language belongs to the Germanic group and is closely related to English. It is spoken by more than 1.5 million people.
The Irish language is spoken by residents of Northern Ireland. The Irish language is known in English as Irish, and in Irish itself as Gaelic – Gaelige. Together with Scottish Gaelic, Irish belongs to the Goidelic group of languages – one of the groups of the Celtic branch. It is spoken by about 95 thousand people.

The Cornish is the language of Cornwall, a county in the southwest of England. Cornish belongs to the Celtic languages and is part of the British branch. Today, about 3,000 people speak Cornish. Only a few hundred people can be called real native speakers, fluent in speech.
The Gaelic language belonged to the Gaelic people – the inhabitants of the mountainous part of Scotland, the Highlands. This area is located in the north-west of the country. Gaelic is also known as Scottish, so it is often confused with Scots. Gaelic, unlike Scots, belongs to the Celtic, not the Germanic branch of languages. This means that it has nothing to do with the English language. Now about 60 thousand people speak Gaelic.

Unique languages
The Shelta is the language of a nomadic ethnic group known as the Irish Travelers. It is widespread both in Ireland and partly in the UK. It is often used as a secret language. The exact number of native speakers is difficult to estimate due to the mobility of native speakers; according to the Ethnologue handbook, the number of native speakers is 6,000 in Ireland and 86,000 worldwide.
The English-Gypsy language is the para-Gypsy language of the Kingdom of Great Britain. The total number of speakers is about 195 thousand people. Some Gypsy loanwords have penetrated into modern English: lollipop, tiny and chav ("boy").

In conclusion
English is used as the official language in the UK. According to research, residents of the United Kingdom most often use this language in communication. Foreign languages are also represented in the UK. Polish has become the most widely spoken language, which is explained by the large number of migrants from this country. The Scottish and Irish languages are currently under threat of complete extinction in the UK. And here, of course, the policy of the official authorities, the dominance of English as the official language of Great Britain and the strengthening of the status of English as the language of international communication are of great importance. Only in the case of the Welsh language, the situation is somewhat better, since an appropriate language policy is being implemented.
