Relevance of the chosen subject.

People cannot live without music. They listen to music, dance to music or learn to play musical instruments. There is music everywhere: at home, in a concert hall, in the park, at the seaside, in the forest and even in the street.

Music is not only a combination of pleasant sounds. It is an art which reflects life. Music reflects people's ideas and emotions. In this world of ours, filled with conflicts, tragedies, joys and hopes, music strives to speak to people of what is most important, urgent and poignant.

Purpose: To find out what role music plays in our live.

Hypothesis: Music is one way of understanding the world. It plays an important role in shaping the personality. It is impossible to imagine modern teenager’s life without music.

In our work we have used online resources, and we have studied several books on the subject and on the basis of the information we have done the project.

Music as a way of self-expression.

In today's world, many teens want to be different from the rest. This desire is natural, understandable and reasonable. Desire not to be the same and to be unique is normal. The only problem is that not everybody realizes their aim. Someone thinks that he is the best due to music he listens to. Very often, these people are influenced by various sub-cultures, such as: punk, rap and the like.

People are united by interests in groups, members of the so-called melts sub-cultures. They learn, communicate, spend time together. Since they share not only music and they prefer other unusual things they are begun considered to be strangers. So they shut themselves off from the people who prefer other music.

All this certainly affects the person's identity. Preferring a certain music or following any sub-culture a man changes his personality. It is no secret that the items of clothing, a person's appearance affect his mind and way of thinking, exactly like the tattoo. This is proved by psychologists. Likewise, music and, in particular, the lyrics influence the thoughts and life style of such people.

Types of music.

Most critics share the modern musical genres into three main areas: pop, rock and rap, which in turn are rooted in earlier styles. Pop - a modern popular music. This is a very broad term covering a variety of genres such as disco, trance, house, techno, funk, new wave, and others.
Rock as a separate genre is rooted in the "black" American blues, which appeared in the 20-30s. To be precise, rock emerged from the branches of the genre - blues guitar, which is much smaller than keyboards and wind instruments. Rap as a genre is derived from dance music. One of the main features is the absence of rap vocals, which is replaced by a recitative. Rap is read like poetry, but is not sung.
Musically, rock has remained virtually the same blues, but their semantic content is different: rock - the music of protest against society, government, or something else.

Types of rock:


PUNK ROCK ("punk" "punk", "garbage") this term - eventful and has a long biography.
First it sounded with regard to numerous Amateur (or "garage" for them, the place-based) groups that emerged in the U.S. after the "British invasion": dirty sounding bad tools, expressive minimalism and did not link the textual censorship shocking limited their popularity, but allowed to form their own audience..

POST-PUNK (POST-PUNK) - a Set of musical forms that emerged in rock music after 1980.
Often in the narrow sense, post-punk understand the generation of groups, characteristics of which is the use of the principles of minimalism and facing on a clean guitar sound.
Usually post-punk is pretty weak similarity to punk rock.


SKA (SKA) is More archaic, negede ragga, the shape of the folklore of Jamaica. 60-e was known as the BLUE BIT and together with migrants from the West Indies came to Britain.

East Coast Rap.

Although the sound of East Coast rap was not completely homogeneous, but since the mid to late 80-ies, this style tended to be more aggressive bits and combinations of samples, and many rappers were proud of their technical expertise in relation to the text content. In other words, with rare exception, East Coast rap became a musical style that is designed more for a busy audience than for the dance floor that has helped to transform the genre into a respected art form, a more Mature and complex. Typical representatives of this "Golden era" East Coast were artists like Eric B. & Rakim, Boogie Down Productions and Slick Rick, all of which differed lyrical direction inherent in old-school style, as well as heavier sound EPMD and Public Enemy. Based on the East Coast began his career positive team musicians of Central Africa "Native Tongues" collected by Afrika Bambaataa. Foreign Rap.

Comedy Rap.

The heyday of Comedy rap accounts for 80 years when hip-hop was easier compared to the 90s (when gangster rap was the darkest musical style). At this time there were several rap parodies, such as A Chunky from Arsenio Hall, but in most comedy rap is a combination of real hip-hop and street humor.

British Rap.

Although British Rap can very rarely be heard outside of the UK and Europe, this style has its own traditions and style. Although, it is impossible to find a great heritage of American hip-hop, but many British rappers grew rich Caribbean ragga traditions, and then entered the vernacular in hip-hop styles. British rap originated in the late 80-ies, and as a springboard used sound combinations from Public Enemy. Soon, many British rappers began to mix their music elements of acid house, - the result is a musical style from the more "heavy" category than its American counterpart. Although there was a faded copy, taken from American rappers, but the best British hip-hop musicians were divided into three camps. There were bands such as the Prodigy, mixed hip-hop and rave. There were teams like Leftfield, who worked in the club style hip. And was also attended by artists like Massive Attack, who slowed the rhythm of hip-hop, adding acid-jazz, all of which gave trip-hop. Even while these three teams continued to conquer new territory, on the music scene was noticeable predominance of British rappers who simply copied the Americans.

Alternative Rap.

Alternative Rap is to hip-hop teams that refuse to follow any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangster, funk, bass, hardcore and party rap. Instead, they mix different genres, adding equal elements of funk and pop/rock, and jazz, soul, reggae and even folk. Although Arrested Development teams and the Fugees were able to achieve success and to Express themselves, most alternative rap groups remain largely by musicians for alternative rock fans, not for hip-hop or pop audience.


Music Hip-Hop and Urban appeared in the late 70-ies, the history of their development is often intertwined. The direction of Urban Soul came out of soft models Philly Soul and disco entertainment. Urban also has many (if not more) borrowed style and popular pop and classic soul. Thus, thanks to the layers of synthesizer, professional production and ballad orientation, Urban Soul rarely looked like a real soul. He sounded more like a pop, that was one of the reasons for its dominance in African-American musical genre of the 80-ies. Some musicians, such as Michael Jackson and Prince, revived the genre, breaking the tradition, but most Urban musicians continued to follow them, - someone did it better (Luther Vandross), someone worse. By the end of the decade, the Urban style began as an experiment to use Hip-Hop news. Hip-Hop is an umbrella term for rap and the resulting culture. Initially rap was very simple, vocalists read it under scratch and drum bits, but as it develops, this trend became more complicated. Rappers in the style of Hardcore, such as Run-D. M. C. and Boogie Down Productions, preferred to use the minimum bit and focus on lyricism of the songs, sometimes adding party hard-rock guitars. They prepared a springboard for the emergence of a Public Enemy, whose sharp, political rhythms and hard steel bit innovative in the late 80's and early 90-ies. By this time, Urban incorporates elements of Hip-Hop, expressed in the form of New Jack Swing music Urban soul with Repovesi rhythms. Moreover, rappers such as MC Hammer, Young MC and Vanilla Ice allowed themselves to soften the "sharp edges" of Hip-Hop, to be able to produce the first successful singles in the style of pop-rap. Some rap groups like answered it with gangster (gangster) rap. Team N. W. A. used the sound of PE, but has made the emphasis on grotesque scenes of violence, sex, lawlessness, but after the split of the group of musicians Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre began his solo career, and gangster rap has evolved in an interesting direction. Break Beat.

The breakbits ("broken" bits) stylistically finally emerged in 1994. The place of his birth is considered to be the UK and major cities, where this style initially received the most prevalent, are the London and Bristol. Most likely the soaring popularity of breakbeat was caused by the fact that by the time people are already somewhat tired from order of the bored house bit. Also popular are very strongly influenced by the fact that in the breakbeat often applied funk grooves, and a very noticeable impact hip hop will not notice just deaf. The main criterion for the determination of breakbeat are clean, virtually no processed drums and percussion (except perhaps in compression) and the standard 4/4 rhythm. The solo most often hit on the second and fourth share. Also in the rhythm may be a few extra breaks. Speaking in plain language, the rhythmic Foundation of breakbeat is based on the displacement of the share (syncopation) some shock or just a piece of rhythm. Most often syncopation occurs on the third beat. For the first time historically, this method was used by the drummers of James brown.

Bard music.

Bard music is a special musical-poetic genre that appeared in the USSR in the 1950s and has developed ever since. Bard song is a social-cultural phenomenon especially typical of the Soviet period. Bard song was opposed to the official Soviet art which was rendered lifeless by communist propaganda and ‘the universal lie’ (Y.Kim). The main trait of bard song is rejection of principles of Soviet pomposity and depersonalization of the human being. A natural combination of lyrics and music is an important feature of the genre. Bard song is an amateur, non-professional style, yet always sincere, human and one that is responsive to topical problems and needs. The bard is ‘a person out of the crowd’ who is not an alien to the listeners (this explains the style’s enormous popularity during the Soviet period). Bard song developed from the genre of urban romance song, the so-called ‘street song’ and thieves’ cant (or underworld/prison song). Initially it was performed in a circle of friends, sometimes around a camping fire, and was sung to the accompaniment of the guitar. The bard often is not professionally trained, which however is not viewed as a drawback. In the Soviet period the songs were not professionally recorded and that was the way of song popularization; the songs were recorded and re-recorded. The tourist song was one of the most popular genres of bard song. Some of the most brilliant representatives of the bard song authors and performers are M.Ancharov, A.Galich, B.Okudzhava, A.Gorodnitsky, Yu.Visbor, N.Matveyeva, A.Yakusheva, Yu.Kim, V.Vysotsky, S.Nikitin. Bard song has its own ‘sacred places’: the Vostok Club in St. Petersburg (founded in 1961) and the Grushin’s Festival in Samara (since 1968). Their purpose has been to popularize bard song in its best traditions

And also on the basis of the survey, we have learned how high school students apply to a music in our high school.



Through our project, we learned what role music plays in the life of a teenager. We also learned what kinds of music are the most popular among high school students .On the basis of this study it can be said that music plays an important role in our lives. It affects the behavior and attitude of adolescents.
