Introduction

Urgency

Many children and adults are keen today on reading books about Harry Potter. And I didn't become an exception. It was very interesting to watch how events are developed in this real magic history. And not simply stories, and the good fairy tale living in reality. It allows to be in several worlds at the same time, living only in the one of them.

When I was reading books and studying ancient history I was surprised when I found out that some names and names in the book are conformable, and sometimes and completely coincide with names of heroes of ancient myths and legends. For example, the Sphinx in the labyrinth during Tournament of Three Wizards asks riddles – in the same way, as the Sphinx in Ancient Greek mythology. The dog the Down, Hagrid's pet, reminds other fantastic animal from Ancient Greek myths – the Cerberus. At English lessons, reading about English holidays, schools, we learned meaning of names of some J. Rowling ’s heroes. I was interested very much , whether is hidden in names which the author chose for the heroes, additional sense? Perhaps, it is a key of hero’s character?

Work purpose: to find keys to the concealed senses hidden heroes' names in J. Rowling' s work "Harry Potter".

Tasks:

- to pick up the actual material

- to analyse the picked-up material

- to find value of names of characters,

- to learn an origin of the chosen names.

Research method: the supervision and analysis method was used, and also the method of continuous sample was used when studying the actual material.

Hypothesis: name of each hero of the book is a "key" to his character.

The main part

For identification and the description of linguistic signs of development of an artistic image of the character essentially decomposition of text structure on two rather independent speech segments: author's and character’s, in each of which there are own linguistic means for the image of characters. «In an author's speech segment, or author's speech arises as the direct image of characters - through the description of their appearance, actions, acts, and indirect - through the description

the related events, the associative relation of natural phenomena, the world of things with image of the character.

Therefore, it is possible to argue that the character or the character is expressed by means of his direct image, value – indirect» [1].

In the literary fairy tale the author curtails value at image by a principle creation of a crossword puzzle where the senses belonging to different cultures and different time of cultures face. «To understand inner meaning of a name, the reasons which have forced the writer to stop on such name, it is impossible without penetration into a being of this concrete image» [2], allocated with this or that "speaking" name. If once a character or the character was characterized in the positive or negative way if in its I-personality certain properties, lines, abilities are enclosed, they will be reproduced in imagination of the reader at the subsequent mentions of a character or the character subconsciously. Besides, actions and acts of a character or the character will be сообразовываться with the characteristic with which it was allocated by the author.

For example, if in ancient Roman mythology the Minerva - the goddess of reason, ingenuities and ingenuity, the patroness of arts and crafts, and also musicians, doctors, actors, poets, teachers and pupils, in the fairy tale of J. Rowling allocates professor Minerva McGonagall with the lines, inherent the Roman goddess: «Professor McGonagall was again different. Harry had been quite right to think she wasn’t a teacher to cross. Strict and clever, she gave them a talking-to moment they had sat down in her first class» [3, 106].

Minerva McGonagall is the professor of transformations (from an armor. transfero - to transfer, turn), she teaches, «very difficult and dangerous subject» ("Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts" - said Professor McGonagall)[3, p. 100] Minerva McGonagall has the qualities inherent in the Roman goddess - tranquillity, judiciousness, restraint which help it with teaching of transformations and in communication with pupils.

Meaning of the names

Dumbledore is the old English word designating a bumblebee. Rowling says that this name very much suits head of Hogwarts because "one of his hobbies is music, and I imagined, that he goes and buzzes to himself under a nose". [4]

Dudley — from dud-a blank space, the useless person [5]

Petunia -name is conformable with petulant — irritable, foolish. [5]

«In one of films there was a married couple on picnic. They sat on the rock, and in the sea the person (morals of the film sank: don't waste time, call rescuers). The husband called the wife Petunia, and I understood, from where I took this rare name because I never met women whom so called, neither in books, nor in life. Sub consciousness is very strange thing. Petunia from the film was thick and cheerful. Vernon and Petunia received the names at once, they had no trial names, as at other characters. "Vernon" is a simple name, I never thought of its value.» [6]

Granger, Hermione

Grange was called the association of farmers fighting for the rights of animals. If you remember, in the fourth book Hermione fought for the rights of elves.

In Ancient Greek mythology Hermione was Elena Troyanskaya's daughter; in Christian tradition the daughter of St. apostle Philippe, sacred; main character of "Winter's Tale" of Shakespeare. One of small planets is called Hermione. Rowling chose this name because it is rare, and wouldn't be desirable for it, that schoolgirls namesakes of the heroine to this heroine compared.

Hagrid, Rubeus

Rubeus means “red” [7] probably in American «Rube» means “bumpkin “[5]. Besides, «rubeus» in Latin is the extremely rare, but nevertheless is used in giant meaning …

In the Greek mythology, is said, there was the kindest creature, apparently, one of the youngest gods. It was in a false manner accused by Aid in murder of Persia's son and expelled from the Olympus, but Zeus allowed him to remain and to look after animals. As you remember, Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts and looked after rare animals there.

Harry Potter,

Sean Potter is Joanne Rowling’s friend, and Harry's Joan's favourite name. Rowling gave Harry a surname "Potter" which on one of rare Latin turns means "powerful" [7] Oh how the aunt Petunia was mistaken, saying that Harry is too simple, ignoble name! Still as noble, even aristocratic, to England got as a result of the Norman gain.

It is an Old English form of name Henri, arisen because simple Englishmen didn't know language, so to speak, ruling elite, and slightly distorted names of the misters. The name is translated as «mister, the host», [8, 101].

Lily means fragile flower. [9]

Severus Snape

Severus — from English word “severe” - cruel, malicious [5]. Besides there was the dynasty of Sever governing in Rome from 193-235 y. The ingenious surname of ‘Snape’ occurred from many words: snipe (to shoot from shelter), snip (the insignificant person), snappish (malicious, captious), snake (Slytherin's snake symbol), to snap – to talk abruptly, with irritation; to snatch (on someone) [5]

Voldemort — « death flight» vol de la mort [10] Still it can be the reference on Voldemortist, the black magician, trying to kill Merlin.

Creating the name of Tom Marvolo Riddle the author uses anagram. From letters of this name she makes phrase: “ I am Voldemort” showing that these names designate one person. And the word “Tom” means “Twin”. We see, that Tom and Voldemort are two parts of one.

Weasley from the name of an animal: weasel – ласка [10] And where does it live? In a burrow. And The Burrow is called also the Weasley’s family house.

Ron — Ronald is the resolute governor [9]. On many sites you can read such story: at the time of the sixth dynasty (it is obvious, Chinese) was the ingenious commander, whose name is translated as Running Weasel (accord Run — Ron). Being the magnificent strategist, he became famous also because he couldn't be beaten in chess (it’s favourite Ron’s game). He died because of fire which began in the turmoil caused by an innocent joke: his soldiers painted a rat yellow color and started up in a hall. Ron too, is remembered, tried to recolour the rat, and too in the yellow.

Mrs. Lestrange, Bellatrix

Bellatriks means woman soldier [7]

Lyutsius Malfoy

1) A widespread name in the environment of the Roman aristocracy (many Roman emperors and philosopher Seneca had this name). Lucifer is light. At the same time this is name of the overthrown angel, he wanted to become equal to god. In demonology – the demon of pride, arrogance. Sometimes it is called also by Lucius.

Malfoy is a real French surname. Occurs from latin ‘maleficus’ means "villain" [7] In the Middle Ages the word ‘malefica’ called witches. Maleficent in English – "harmful" or «with malicious intentions». Mal foi in French – "perfidy", damage. [10]

Draco is the Dragon [7], and also constellation and the Greek tyrant.

Narcissa Malfoy [9]. «His mother, Narcissa, was blonde, too; tall and slim she would have been nice-looking if she hadn't been wearing a look that suggested there was a nasty smell under her nose» [3, 80]. In this example symbol and image communication, the Narcissus - a symbol of insensible beauty, narcissism, coldness, and also death is obvious, and from Narcissa Malfoy's description we understand that this person is pride, haughty, contemptuously treats people around, snobbery and high opinion on, an admiring itself is inherent in it.

Peter Pettigrew

1) Pet + gray-"pet" + "gray". [5]

2) On old French petit + cru designates small (low, small) the person. [10]

The name Peter is translated as «a stone, a block» [11]. Why the author of the book gave to this hero such name we can't explain.

Sirius Black is animagus (animagus - from English animal - an animal and magus - the wizard). He is the wizard, capable to turn into an animal. So, Sirius Black could easily turns into a black dog. Actions of Sirius Black, his abilities to turn into a black dog and to make acts, it is possible to connect together his image and deep sense, coming to disclosure of sense of Sirius Black’s name: Sirius - from Latin dog’s Star (Constellation of Dogs) [7], from English black - black where the senses of the Roman and English culture shown by a different temporary framework meet: ancient and modern culture, a dog is a symbol of devotion, fidelity, also the friend of the person. Sirius Black is Harry Potter's true and devoted friend who is capable to come to the rescue in any difficult situation, despite danger.

Remus Lupin; from Latin lupinus - wolf, [7] the name Remus - a hint on mythological ancient Roman Ram, the founder of Rome whom, according to the legend, was brought up by she-wolf.

Godric Griffindor

Godric is an Anglo-Saxon name, «ruling good luck», casts thoughts on the early Middle Ages. Gryffindore — a griffon there is heard clearly, and the second part … it is possible, the same French d’ore [10] Certainly, the coat of arms is not a griffon, and a lion, but gold after all!

The name Godric originally meant “strength of god”.

Surname is homonym of the French expression which it is possible to translate as “a griffin from gold”. The griffin - a legendary creature, half an eagle, is half the lion, building nests from gold.

This character based the faculty which symbol is the lion, and one of colours is golden; courageous and brave pupils are accepedt on faculty. The protagonist once lived with his e parents in the town called Godric's Hollow; there is an assumption that the protagonist - the descendant and the successor of this wizard.

Helga Pufenduy

Name origin: Helga occurred on behalf of Helge, and that, in turn, has the Scandinavian origin and once meant "sacred" [12].

The surname is homonymous to expression “huff and puff that means to pant, especially at heavy physical activities. [5]

Probably, it is irony of the author that the woman based school faculty on which accept pupils, whose outstanding qualities are diligence, and they even are tired of it physically.

Ravenclaw, Rowena – brave, courageous, a Celtic name [13]

The surname is a combination of two words: raven + claw [5].

Crows historically symbolized wisdom; on the faculty based by this woman, are taken the cleverest students. Strange, but a symbol of faculty is not the raven, and an eagle. We didn't find an explanation.

Salazar Slytherin

The name Salazar was carried by the dictator ruling Portugal during the period from 1932 to 1968 [14]; originally it, obviously, arose in Spain and meant "palace".

The surname includes two words: sly and to slither verb with value “to creep, as a snake, to kowtow” [5].

This character based faculty on which take the cunning and resourceful pupils, able to achieve the object in any ways; the snake became a symbol of faculty. Also he lodged in a confidential room of school of a basilisk - the huge snake, capable to turn all live to stone the look.

In the book it is often possible to observe open opposition of two faculties (Gryffindor/Slytherin), their brightest representatives (Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy), their deans (Minerva McGonagall/Severus Snape), and faculties of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw side with Gryffindor faculty. Besides, soon after the basis of Salazar Slytherin school left it, being not consent with rules of reception of pupils.

Professor Sprout;

from English sprout - the sprout, a shoot, escape, a stalk (5) - the teacher at school of Hogvarts of a subject of a travology, a science about plants as they grow, get strong roots and trunks, becoming strong and beautiful plants.

On these an example it is possible to track common noun transformation in a proper name. From all word meanings of "sprout", the author chooses one which is characterized precisely by the character, and in process of our acquaintance to the character in the text opens semantic aspect of his name.

Nicolas Flamel-the winner of the people [15].

Reading the second book I noticed, that J. Rowling used anagram, making the name of Tom Marvolo Riddle.

Having analysed the received material, we came to a conclusion that more often the writer used English names, meet Latin, French and so on less often.

Working over a material, I read an article «Harry's name got became the most popular in Britain» [16,], it was said that «Harry's name took in the list the first place, in particular, thanks to popularity of the character from Joanne Rowling novels about the boy wizard». It became interesting to us that this is so known heroes in our country, in particular, and our school. We carried out questioning (questionnaires are attached) and received the following results:

In total took part in questioning of 240 children. All children answered that know, who such Harry Potter.

Choosing between reading books and watching films, pupils prefer to watch movies.

hello_html_m1d06b2ea.gif

On a question: «What name of the hero is pleasant to you more?» pupils answered

In the following way

hello_html_5f082777.gif

Besides, we counted all heroes and divided into 2 categories: positive and negative, according to their role in work.

Conclusion:

We see that J. Rowling, as well as other modern writers of fairy tales and not fairy tales, “any more don't follow myths on sincerity conditions, unlike carriers of culture of folklore, they are rational, in value of proper names put analytical symbolics, leaving a principle of mysteriousness” [1, 63] , as shows the analysis of proper names in the above-stated examples.

So, mysteriousness of proper names in the folklore fairy tale is based upon mythological representations while modern writers go from rebus-krossvords mysteriousness, placing components of proper names in different cultures and at various times cultures, without refusing pramifological images.

The proper name given to the subject (object) and capable to represent in the curtailed form an event can be a symbol. The symbol - some kind of incentive for expansion and widening of an image, to solving of its hidden sense, this not only through the description of appearance, acts and so on, but also through communication with the character or character name and if once a character or the character was already characterized, at a meeting with other character, but with the same name, the reader instinctively allocates a new character or the character with the characterologic signs, available information knowledge already subconsciously, with well familiar prototypical images.

Meanings of proper names in Roling’s work is not only "key" to their character, but also «an internal smile» the author, directing on a way of studying of myths and folklore. The writer uses uncommon sense of humour, erudition and resourcefulness at a choice of names for the characters It uses words foreign, anagrams (change of an order of letters in a word), names from history and myths. The Rolling created something other in comparison with those sources to which she addresses, and at the same time wonderfully remains it is true essences of each of them.

Абстракт на работу Кенжебаевой Юлии «Значение имен в произведении Джоан Роулинг «Гарри Поттер»

Цель работы: найти ключи к скрытым смыслам, спрятанным в именах произведений Дж. Ролинг «Гарри Поттер».

Задачи:

- подобрать фактический материал

-проанализировать подобранный материал

-найти значение имён персонажей,

- узнать происхождение выбранных имен.

Этапы исследования:

  • Работа с произведением;

  • Изучение теоретического материала;

Good morning. I’m K.Y. I’m a pupil of school №8. Let me introduce you my work “Meaning of names in Joanne Rowling’s work "Harry Potter"

Many children and adults are keen today on reading books about Harry Potter. And I didn't become an exception. It was very interesting to watch how events are developed in this real magic story. And not simply stories, and the good fairy tale living in reality. It allows to be in several worlds at the same time, living only in the one of them.

When I read books and studied ancient history I was surprised when I found out that some names and names in the book are similsr, and sometimes and completely coincide with names of heroes of ancient myths and legends. I was interested very much , whether is hidden in names which the author chose for the heroes, additional sense. Perhaps, it is a key of hero’s character.

Work’s purpose: to find keys to the concealed senses hidden heros' names J. Rowling' s work "Harry Potter"

Reading books, I wrote out 125 names, but we analysed only 25 the most popular names and surnames.

Harry Potter, Sean Potter is Joanne Rowling’s friend, and Harry's Joan's favourite name. Rowling gave Harry a surname "Potter" which on one of rare Latin turns means "powerful" Oh how the aunt Petunia was mistaken, saying that Harry is too simple, ignoble name! Still as noble, even aristocratic, to England got as a result of the Norman gain.

It is an Old English form of name Henri, arisen because simple Englishmen didn't know language, so to speak, ruling elite, and slightly distorted names of the misters. The name is translated as «mister, the host», (8, 101).

Hagrid, Rubeus Rubeus means red

probably from American «Rube» — the bumpkin. Besides, «rubeus» in Latin is the extremely rare, but nevertheless is used in «giant» meaning …

In the Greek mythology is said there was such kindest creature, apparently, one of the youngest gods. It was in a false manner accused by Aid in murder Persia's son and expelled from the Olympus, but Zeus allowed him to remain and to look after animals. As you remember, Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts l and looked after rare animals there.

Voldemort -vol de la mort is French word and means « death flight». Still it can be the reference on Voldemortist, the black magician, trying to kill Merlin.

Creating the name of Tom Marvolo Riddle the author uses anagram. From letters of this name she makes phrase: “ I am Voldemort” showing that these names designate one person. And the word “Tom” means “Twin”. We see, that Tom and Voldemort are two parts of one.

Malfoy - a real French surname. Occurs from latin maleficus, meaning "villain". In the Middle Ages the word malefica called witches . Maleficent in English – "harmful" . Mal foi in French means "perfidy", damage.

Professor Sprout; from English sprout – means a shoot, escape, a stalk the teacher at Hogwarts of Herbalogy, a science about plants as they grow, get strong roots and trunks, becoming strong and beautiful plants.

On this example it is possible to track common noun transformation in a proper name. From all word meanings of "sprout", the author chooses one which is characterized precisely by the character, and in process of our acquaintance to the character in the text opens semantic aspect of his name.

Having analysed the received material, we came to a conclusion that more often the writer used English names, meet Latin, French and so on less often.

In total 240 children took part in questioning. All children answered that they know Harry Potter. (scheme)

Value of proper names in Rolling’s work not only «keys" to their character, but also «an internal smile» of the author, directing on a way of studying of myths and folklore. The writer uses uncommon sense of humour, erudition and resourcefulness at a choice of names for the characters It uses foreign words, anagrams (change of an order of letters in a word), names from history and myths. Rolling created something other in comparison with those sources to which she addresses, and at the same time wonderfully remains it is true essences of each of them.
