Alcohol
dependence syndrome
Student
1.
Alcoholism, which is known as «alcohol dependence syndrome», is a disease that
is characterized by the elements:
-
Craving: a strong need,
compulsion to drink.
-
Loss of control: the frequentinability
to stop drinking once a person has begun.
-
Physical dependence: symptoms
– nausea, sweating, shakiness, anxiety.
-
Tolerance: the need for increasing
amounts of alcohol in order to get «high».
Student
2.
For most people alcohol is a pleasant accompaniment to social activity.
Moderate alcohol use up to 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for
women and older people (a standard drink is 1 bottle of beer or wine, 1 glass
of wine) is not harmful for most adults. However nearly 40 million Russians –
abuse alcohol or are alcoholic. About 56% of men and women in Russia report
that 1 or more of the relatives have a drinking problem. Heavy drinking can
increase health problems, the risk of death.
83
per cent of 13-14 year-old children said that they had tried an alcoholic
drink. When adults talk about alcohol, they just say it’s bad, and that’s the
end of
the
conversation.
Student
3.
How can you tell whether you or someone close to you may have a drinking
problem? Answering the following 4 questions:
-
Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
-
Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
-
Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
-
Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves of a
hangover (eye opener)?
1
«yes» response suggests a possible alcohol problem. If you responded «yes» to
more than 1 question, it is highly likely that a problem exists.
Student
4. Help for Alcohol Abuse. Examine the benefits of stopping an
unhealthy drinking pattern.
Set
a drinking goal for yourself.
Examine
the situations and develop new ways of handling these situations so that you
can maintain your drinking goal.
Student
5. Children and toxicomania
Such
products as glue, butane gas, solvents are made on solvent base. They can be
used for sniffing and receiving post effects of visual hallucinations.
Solvents
are commercial products (glue, nail polish remover, aerosols, gas lighter fuel
and petrol, which give off a vapour. It can make you feel happy, dizzy. The
effects can last an hour. Solvents are depressant drugs.
It
is estimated that 1 of 5 young people in Britain have used solvents. It is the
second most commonly used drug for this age group. Talking about our country, there
is no exact statistics about this fact, but it’s not a secret that the number of
«sniffers» is growing and has reached a tremendous index. It happens, because
such substances are available and cheap.
Because
solvents are sniffed from a plastic bag, covering the head, there is a risk of
suffocation. Nobody knows exactly how many children die in our country, because
of solvent addiction.
In
Great Britain it is prohibited to sell solvent –based products to children
under 18s. It is illegal there. In our country there is no such legislation
about this problem, which is becoming worse day after day.
Применение
здоровьесберегающих технологий (физкультминутка, «мелодия океана»).
III.

1.
Вводная беседа.
2.

произносит новые лексические единицы, выведенные на слайдах, студенты
повторяют за ним хором (2 раза). После записи слов каждый студент ещё раз
прочитывает слова преподавателю.

Drugs
Drugs
are psychoactive substance. A psychoactive substance is something that people
take to change the waythey feel, think or behave. The term drug covers a number
of substances that must be used under medical supervision to treat illness.
In
the past most drugs were made from plants. Plants were grown and converted into
drugs (coca paste, opium, marijuana. These products were further processed to
drugs (cocaine, heroin) and finally in the 20th century people find
out how to make drugs from chemicals. These are man-made or synthetic drugs and
include ecstasy, LSD. They were initially produced for experimental reasons and
later were used for recreational purposes.
For
the first time in human history, an industrial complex produces drugs that are
used for the sole purpose of «having fun». People use drugs to escape the
reality, to have fun. The most people are young, who don’t understand what
might happen to them because of drugs.
IV.
Применение и закрепление новых знаний. Вопросно-ответная
работа.
Teacher:

Answer the questions:
1.

2)
Look through the following opinions for and against legalizing soft drugs.
Think over the arguments. Give your opinion.
PRO
1)
Legalizing pot is better for the society than prohibition – it protects human
rights.
2)
Teens can smoke pot if they want to – it’s their life. They are free to decide
and nobody can forbid them to do what they want.
3)
Unlike tobacco pot doesn’t increase one’s cancer risk, hemp is used in
medicine, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol is worse than smoking pot.
CON
1)
If we legalize soft drugs it can make the situation with drug abuse worse.
2)
It’s a crime against future generations to make pot legally available.
3)
Soft drugs cause health problems as any narcotics do.
3)
Make a speech about this topic.
Teacher.
In your opinion why do young people start to take drugs?
Student
1.
Most young people start to take drugs under pressure from their mates. Teenagers
want to try all sorts of options. For many of them it means to get as much
pleasure as possible. They want to live now, and to live to the max.
Teacher.
What are the symbols of drug abuse?
Student
2.
Constricted or dilated pupils, unusual flare-ups or outbreaks of temper,
general changes in values, association with known drug abusers.

V.
Домашнее задание.
Teacher.
You
work for an advertising agency, and you have to create a campaign against
Drinking and Driving (driving a car after you have drunk alcohol). In groups
prepare a poster – with a picture and a slogan.
1.
Design
an anti-smoking poster for the college (для
студентов
с
базовым
уровнем).
2.
A
friend of yours has a problem with alcohol or drugs. Write a letter to the
problem page of a magazine, asking for advice (для
студентов
с
