Well done, pupils. Now get ready for the lesson and we shall start.

But we will not only speak about the topic. We should also make some exercises and check your homework. I hope you will work hard as usual and be attentive at the lesson.

2. Актуализация опорных знаний.

As I have just said, the topic of our today’s discussion is St. George's Ribbon. No one wants to be in war, but nevertheless we should speak about it. Look at the board. Here are 2 statements. Let’s read them:

  • The quickest way to end the war is to be defeated.

  • If he wants to live at peace he should be prepared to the war.

Will you translate the 1st/2d statement? What do think about these statements? How can you comment it? Choose any of them and say your opinion. Say if you’re agree/ disagree with this statement and why.

Well ok, good of you. And now let’s read the text.. You should say if you are agree or not and prove your opinion. But before doing this task let’s read some conversational expressions that will help you to express your personal opinion. Look at the board, let’s read them. Shall I translate any of them? Now let’s work with the exercise.

Well, good. We’re through with it.

Before speaking about St. George's Ribbon  I want you to read the words that are closely connected with our topic. Look at the text.. I’ll read word by word, you should repeat after me. Let’s start. Now I’ll say the word in Russian you should say this word in English. Well, good. You’ve perfectly done it.

You know that nowadays there are conflicts between different countries. Sometimes these conflicts can lead to wars. Even now somewhere people suffer from firing, bombing. And now I want you to read the names of the countries where wars were. Look at the blackboard. And now name only those countries where wars were not so long ago. I can say that it is horrible when somebody live in the country where there is war. I feel sorry for these people.

3. Проверка знаний.

Let’s check your homework. But before, let’s work with the words. I’ll write out some words that are closely connected with the topic: to suffer, to involve, to destroy, a victim, to wound, to prevent wars, to kill, to exceed. Let’s read these words all together. Now I say word in Russian, you say it in English. Now let’s read this text. …, start reading. That’s enough. Translate the sentence.

Were continuing our work. And now exercise 8 at page 59. Open your exercise- books. In this exercise you should make phrases, using the words from columns. First of all we should translate these words. Now write your own phrases. You have 4 minutes. The time is over. Let’s check. Now let’s do the task under the letter «b». Here you should make up 3 sentences with some of the phrases you’ve just made. I give you 4 sentences.

Текст к уроку.

St. George's Ribbon

St. George's Ribbon is one of the most recognised and respected symbols of military valour ([ˈvælər] до́блесть) in modern Russia. It's called by the name of St. George, the patron ([ˈpeɪtrən] покровитель) of the Russian army. As you know, the ribbon consists of three black stripes and two orange ones. It is believed that the colours represent gunpowder and fire. Today it represents the commemoration of World War II (Great Patriotic War). It is also an important reminder of Russia’s heroic past. I have found that the origins of St. George's Ribbon lay back in the times of the Russian Empire. It was introduced as the highest military decoration instituted by Catherine the Great.

Since the 60th anniversary of Victory Day in 2005, the ribbon is worn by civilians in Russia and other former republics of the USSR as an act of remembrance. This symbol awakens in people the patriotic feelings, gives a sense of stability and unity. The motto that goes with it is "We remember! We are proud!" As for me, I am proud of my country – the winner.
