Topic: Travelling around the world.

Objectives:

Practical

– To activate the topic-related lexis;

– to develop pupil’s skills in listening and reading;

– to practice speaking in dialogues and monologues;

Educative

– to teach pupils to work in pairs and groups;

Developing

– to develop pupils creative skills and imagination;

– to encourage them to learn more about different

countries.

Equipment:

The Power Point presentation, a map of Europe, emblems,

cards for work, stripes with parts of the text, CD disk.

Procedure

I. Preliminaries.

Greeting and Aim

T. Good morning, dear pupils! I am pleased to see you

at the lesson! Our topic today is “Travelling around the world”. By the end of the lesson you should be able to participate in common conversational exchanges about travelling, work in groups and pairs, talk about travelling using the topical vocabulary.

Warming up

T. Well, let’s get started. First open your hearts to verses! I hope you will enjoy it.

St.

Come with me to Pasadena!

Today at ten we will arrive.

I have been in Pasadena

For a great deal of my life.

Come with me to Pasadena

If you want to have some fun,

Watch the dancing seniorinas

In the heat of the sun!

When I woke up today

I heard someone say,

Girl, it is raining now,

And they’re expecting snow…

And this morning I knew

What I had to do:

Take the next plane

And finally go

Refrain

We are going to Greece,

Take a trip to Paris

To escape from the

Stress and the strain,

Saving money each day

There must be a way

To get out

In this gather again!

Brainstorm

T. So, we hardly can imagine our lives without travelling.

Let’s name the reason why people like travelling.

Possible answers:

St 1. Travelling is the best way to study Geography.

St 2. People travel to see new countries and continents.

St 3. People travel to make new friends.

St 4. People travel to discover new things.

St 5. They like to go sightseeing.

St 6. They want to learn traditions and customs.

II. Main Part .

Reading

T. It’s time for the comical situation.

He was not ill

A bus was crowded that morning. A passenger sitting next to the window suddenly closed his eyes and turned his head aside. The man standing by asked, “Are you ill?

Can I do anything for you?”

“I am quite well”, the passenger answered. “I just hate to see old ladies standing.”

T. Believe it or not, but these things happen. Have you ever experienced anything like this?

Work in pairs:  аcting out a dialogue

Kate: Max, have you been abroad?

Max: Yes, I have.

Kate: Where have you been?

Max: I’ve been to China.

Kate: Really? When did you go there?

Max: I went there last summer.

Kate: What did you see?

Max: I saw the Great Wall. It was wonderful!

Kate: Did you buy anything?

Max: Yes, I bought a T-shirt and a cap.

T. At the previous lesson pupils were united into three groups («Iceland team», «France team», «Italy team») Each group has a leader or the main expert.

So, I think, it is time to start. The first item of our discussion is “Iceland is a country of ice”.

St 1. Welcome to Iceland!

Iceland is not only closer than you think, but far different than you ever imagined. It is famous for its geysers, glaciers and active volcanoes.

St 2. It is known for natural hot springs and spa culture. Choose between relaxing in thermal pools, skiing, riverrafting and swimming in the sea and much more.

St 3. Iceland is ideal destination for tourists who like diving. Iceland is among 10 destinations worldwide for whale watching. The BlueLagoon, the Gullfoss waterfall, Vatnajokull glacier are the most famous sites in Iceland.

St 4. Volcano tours attract a lot of tourists every year.

T. Our experts have some questions to our students:

– What is it known for?

– What kind of activity can you choose?

– What are the most famous sites in Iceland?

– It was really interesting.

Oh, here is the group of experts from France! Let’s join

them.

St 6. France is the largest country in Western Europe. The official language of France is French. The capital of this country is Paris, the most romantic place in the world for people in love. With 81.9 million foreign tourists in 2007, France was ranked as the first tourist destination in the world. France and, especially Paris, have some of the world’s largest museums, including the Louver, whichis the most visited art museum in the world.

St 7. Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Studio Park are France’s and indeed Europe’s most popular theme parks. The most popular tourist sites include Eiffel Tower, Louver Museum, Mont-Saint- Michel and Centre Pompidou.

St 8. Amazing in its beauty Notre-Dame is the Roman Catholic cathedral where the kings of France

were crowned. Welcome to France and get ready for some unforgettable impressions!

St 9.

– What are the most popular theme parks?

– What are the most popular sites in Paris?

– Where were the kings of France Crowned?

T. Thank you for your presentation. Today we have invited special guests from Italy. Listen to

their reports about the country.

St 10. Italy has countless places to visit and enjoy; firstly, the Tower of Pisa, symbol of Italy.

St 11. A popular tourist activity is to pose for photographs pretending to hold up the leaning tower and preventing it from falling. Secondly, the Doge’s Palace. It’s a wonderful gothic palace in Venice. Then, the famous Fontana de Trevi and Colosseum. Do not miss a chance to visit Italy!

St 12.

– What are the most popular sites in Italy?

– What can you see behind the beauty of Rome?

– What is the symbol of Italy?

T. Now, pupils, work in groups. Put the mixed stripes in logical order, and read the

whole text after that.

Christopher Columbus is a very famous traveler.

He was born in Italy, but he lived in Spain for a long

time. He was a seaman and he dreamed about discovering

new ways to India where people found a

lot of gold.

Christopher Columbus organized the travel to India.

The King and the Queen of Spain agreed to give him the

money for the travel.

Columbus decided to sail westward as he was sure

that our world was round.

Christopher Columbus sailed 4.000 miles and, in 1492,

reached some land.

He thought it was India, but it was not. It was Central

America! People started to speak about this land as the

New World.

Christopher Columbus made four voyages to the New

World.

During his second voyages he discovered Cuba, but

he did not know it was an island. Spain was interested

in new lands very much and many people went to live

there.

T. It was interesting for you, wasn’t it?
