T: Now you’ll listen to a short text entitled”From the history of Mother’s Day” and check your guesses. Then complete the third column of the table.

FROM THE HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY





During the 1600-s England celebrated a day called “Mothering Sunday” on the fourth Sunday of Lent, that is the 40-day period leading up to Easter. That holiday honoured the mothers of England.

In the USA Mother’s Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia in 1908 on the second Sunday of May.

By 1911 Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state.

President Woodrow Wilson in 1914 made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2-nd Sunday of May.

Many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year.

Such countries as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium also celebrate Mother’s Day on the 2-nd Sunday of May.



T: Let’s do the next task. We are going to speak about the ways people celebrate

Mother’s Day. You’ll get worksheets with clusters . Write down your ideas. The more ideas- the better.

CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY

One of the best ways to celebrate Mother’s Day is to give your mom the day off. Let her take it easy and relax while the rest of the family do the work.

Many families begin Mother’s Day with breakfast in bed .Usually dad and the kids will let mom sleep late as they go into kitchen and prepare her favourite meal. A Mother’s Day breakfast can consist of anything your mom likes.

After the food is cooked arrange everything nicely on the tray. Don’t forget the vase with a single flower. With spring here, the children can pick a tulip or daffodil from the garden outside. When everything is ready, carefully carry the tray and mom’s favourite sections from the newspaper up to her bedroom. Cards and small presents from the children can be placed on the tray before it is presented to mom in bed.

Many families make a special Mother’s Day dinner or take mom out to her favourite restaurant for a meal. It is a good day to let your mom relax and let her see what a wonderful family she has.

T: Today we are going to read and discuss a short story by S.Leacock. Look at the title of this story and try to guess what kind of story it is.

HOW WE KEPT MOTHER’S DAY

Of all the different ideas that have been started lately, I think that the very best is the notion of celebrating once a year “Mother’s Day”.

We decided to have a special celebration of Mother’s Day. We thought it a fine idea. It made us realize how much Mother had done for us for years, and all the efforts and sacrifices that she had made for our sake.

So we decided that we’d make it a great day, a holiday for all the family, and do everything we could to make mother happy. Father decided to take a holiday from the office, so as to help in celebrating the day, and my sister Ann and I stayed home from college classes, and Mary and my brother Will stayed home from High School.

T: Imagine that you are preparing to celebrate Mother’s Day in your family. What will you do first?



It was our plan to make it a day just like X-mas or any big holiday, and so we decided to decorate the house with flowers. We asked Mother to do it because she always does it.

The two girls thought it would be a nice thing to dress in our best for such an occasion, and so they both got new hats. Father had bought silk ties for himself and us boys. We were going to get Mother a new hat too, but it turned out that she liked her old hat better than a new one.

T:If it was your holiday, where would you like to celebrate it? Don’t forget that it is celebrated in spring.




After breakfast we decided that we would hire a motor car and take Mother for a beautiful drive away into the country. Mother is hardly ever able to have a treat like that, because she is busy in the house nearly all the time.

But on the very morning of the day we changed our plan a little bit. We all felt that it would be nicer to have a definite purpose. It turned out that Father had just got a new rod the day before, and he said that Mother could use it if she wanted to: in fact, he said it was practically for her, only mother said she would watch him fish than fish herself.

So we got everything arranged for the trip. Mother cut some sandwiches and packed all up in a basket for us.

When the car came to the door, it turned out that we couldn’t all get in. Father said that he could stay at home and work in the garden. There was a lot of dirty work that he could do. He said that he wanted us to be happy and have a big day. The girls said that Mother had only to say the word and they’d gladly stay at home and work.

T: How do you think , which of the characters won’t go for a trip and why?



In the end it was decided that Mother would stay at home and have a lovely restful day round the house. It turned out anyway that Mother didn’t care for fishing and also it was just a little bit cold and fresh out-of-doors, though it was lovely and sunny, and Father was afraid that Mother might take a cold if she came.

So we all drove away and Mother stood and watched us as long as she could see us.

We had the loveliest day. Father and the boys fished, the girls met quite a lot of people. We all had a splendid time.





( Перед тем как выдать пятую часть текста, учащиеся должны ответить на вопрос)

T: How will the story end, in your opinion?



It was quite late when we got back. The dinner was ready. It was grand. Mother had to get up and down during the meal fetching things back and forward, but at the end Father noticed it and said she simply mustn’t do it, that he wanted her to spare herself.

When the dinner was over all of us wanted to help clear the things up and wash the dishes, only mother said she would really much rather do it.

It was quite late when it was all over, and when we all kissed Mother before going to bed, she said it had been the most wonderful day in her life and I think there were tears in her eyes.


Проработав таким образом текст, учитель обращается к пятому слайду презентации, где учащимся предлагают ответить на толстые и тонкие вопросы по тексту.



В качестве домашнего задания можно предложить учащимся представить себя одним из героев этого рассказа и рассказать эту историю от его имени

Now imagine that you are one of the characters of this story and retell this story on behalf of the mother( father, Mary, Ann, Will and the author).
