Scotland.
Scotland is a
land of mountains, lakes and romantic castles. The winters are cold, with
plenty of snow, but the summers are often warm and sunny. Deer live in the
hills, and the rivers are full of salmon. The flag of Scotland
is St. Andrew cross. The national animal of Scotland is the unicorn. The
national plant is thistle. The traditional musical instrument is bagpipe.
The
capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. Edinburgh is a beautiful city. The heart of
the city is the castle, where the kings and queens of Scotland
lived for centuries. The Castle looks like the castle from a fairy-tale, and
parts of it are more than a thousand years old. From the top of the Castle
there is a beautiful view of the hill and the sea. Besides the Castle there are
many other interesting buildings, such as Holyrood Palace which is the old
royal residence, the Art Gallery, the University of Edinburgh. Another big city
of Scotland is Glasgow. Actually Glasgow is the biggest city of Scotland and it’s very beautiful.
Not far
from Glasgow there is one of the most famous of Scotland’s manu lakes (called
“lochs”), Loch Lomond. Another famous lake is Loch Ness. You probably heard the
story about Nessy – a monster who lives in the lake. Many tourists come to Scotland
to see Nessy. Scottish numerous valleys are known as “glens”. This “glens” are
very beautiful.
Kilt is
a traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th
century. Since the fifteenth century, each Scottish family (or clan) has worn
its own tartan as a kind of badge. It was a useful way of recognizing people,
especially in times of war. Many tartans date only from the 19th
century, but some of the old patterns still exist. “Dress” tartans, worn on
special occasions, have light, bright colours. Hunting tartans are usually
green, blue or brown.
Scotland is very
beautiful country with interesting history and traditions. If you will have
such opportunity you should visit Scotland.
