1. Unimaginable Facts – Hunger

A recent estimate states that almost one billion out of total of 7 billion people alive on earth is suffering from malnutrition.

Each year enough food for 10 billion people is harvested and processed.

Supermarkets and retail shops around the world dispose of thousands of tonnes of edible foodstuff everyday, as government legislation demands that only fresh products are on their shelves.

2. A Man Who Can Speak 19 Langauges
A 33-year-old polyglot from Central Europe, Vladimir Skultety, claims he can speak 19 languages.

In his introduction, which is in English, he admits he does not speak every language correctly, but he is able to have a decent basic conversation.

3. The Selfie Stick Is Not a New Invention

Is the selfie stick a new gadget?

Perhaps people think it is and believe it was recently created in our highly sophisticated era.

If you are one of them, then you are wrong. Taking selfies using digital cameras is not the latest craze.

A long time ago people wished to photograph themselves.

An old picture discovered recently in a family album proves a camera selfie stick was used more than 90 years ago.

4. Musician Kept a Cool Head

A young musician, playing classical music in a concert, had his performance rudely interrupted by a mobile telephone ringing in the pocket of a member of the audience.

Though it was a faux pas, he smartly picked up and added the tones into his performance.

You can watch and hear this incident in the video. It occurs at the 44th second.

5. Fear of Dentists

If you are afraid of visiting your dentist, then you are not alone.

Millions of people are scared of sitting in a dentist’s chair, according to a report on the Web MD website.

Few people enjoy going to a dentist, yet a visit today can prevent serious problems from occurring in the future.

It is recommended that you visit a dentist every six months.

6. Losing a Friend

The loss of a friend can be one of the most difficult experiences in life. Often it is as painful as breaking up with a spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend.

Losing a friend can make a person feel very alone.

The Wikihow website offers several tips on what to do when you lose a friend.

Some of the suggestions provided are finding a new hobby, joining a club, speaking to neighbors and other friends, and smiling.

The site also notes that losing a friend is not the end of the world and that you will find new friends eventually.

7. Are We Losing Our Memories?

With so much information available to us on the Internet, we seem to be using our memories less and less.

In many cases, it is no longer essential to memorize things we once needed to know. Facts that we have forgotten can easily be found through search engines. Directions to a friend’s house can be obtained through a couple of clicks of the mouse.

Will this process continue? Will our brains change as we rely more and more on technology?

8. Do Something Nice for Someone Else Today

A random act of kindness does not cost anything, but it can go a long way in improving the day of another person.

There are many things you can do to make the world a better place today.

For example, give an elderly person your seat on the bus, send an email to someone you have not seen in a long time, help someone with a chore, or just smile.

Doing good deeds will make you feel better too.

9. London’s Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport in London is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom and one of the busiest in the world.

Many international passengers go through Heathrow on their way from one destination to another.

Flights depart from Heathrow to destinations around the world every day.

Because Heathrow is so large it can take a long time to go from one end of the airport to another if a passenger needs to reach a connecting flight.

10. Tutankhamun Died While Hunting

The mystery of how Egypt’s King Tutankhamun died has been solved.

The boy king, whose tomb was discovered in 1922, fell off a chariot while he was hunting game.

He broke his leg. This injury caused blood poisoning.

Before this discovery, it was thought that Tutankhamun might have been murdered.

More than 350 English students, aged 18 to 59, from 39 countries were asked recently by Kaplan International Colleges about their favorite places in New York City.

Times Square, located in the heart of the Big Apple, topped the list of tourist attractions, followed by Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.

• Central Park is the most popular park or green space (59%).
• Lion King is the favorite on or off-Broadway musical (43%).

• The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the favorite gallery or museum (33%).
• The Meatpacking District is the most popular area for nightlife (27%).
• Little Italy is the favourite area to eat out (21%).

(МОДУЛЬ 4  IN THE NEWS   Об этом говорят и пишут)

Цели урока:

1.обучающие — освоить во всех видах деятельности лексические единицы по теме    “ Do you hear about…?”(“ IN THE NEWS ”);

-развивать умения. составляющие лингвистическую компетенцию: сопоставление языковых явлений в английском и родном языках;

- развивать компенсаторную и социокультурную компетенции.

2. развивающие — развивать умение работать в паре, в коллективе;  

-развивать навыки работы с информацией, в том числе с использованием ИКТ;

- развивать умения смыслового чтения: умения прогнозировать содержание текста, выделять основную мысль, главные факты;

-развивать познавательные интересы рамками урока.                                                                                                

3. воспитательные — способствовать развитию сотрудничества и взаимопомощи при работе в паре, в коллективе;  

- способствовать осознанию возможностей самореализации средствами иностранного языка ;                                                                                                                                                - воспитывать  уважительное, толерантное отношение к другой культуре, более глубокое осознание своей родной культуры, осознание значения  музыки в жизни человека.

Задачи: работать над:                                                                                                                         - освоением  тематической лексики по теме,                                                                                -развитием языковой догадки,                                                                                                         - развитием навыков просмотрового и поискового чтения,                                                        - освоением способов словообразования,                                                                                       - развитием навыков монологической и диалогической речи.

Ход урока:

1.      1) Организационный момент:

Good morning, dears! Nice to see you, take your sits. How are you today?

2)      Проверка домашнего задания.

3) Введение в тему урока.

- So, today we’ll learn more interesting things than at the previous lesson. Let’s start. Our daily life consist  from the news. Let’s reading and talking about them. Please, look at your cards and summarise the news you get in one sentence.   

2.Работа с лексикой.

1) Повторение лексики.                                                                                                                   - Please, let’s revise the words which you know on this topic

( Учащиеся устно вспоминают лексику по теме, учитель на доске записывает слова)

2).Активизация ранее изученной лексики.

- Look at p. 38, ex. 1.

Now, we are going to have Listening task. Look and listen at the dialogue on p. 38 in the ex. 2.

Discuss it.

3)      VideoTime. Look at this videoguide and discuss it with your partner (group)

3.      Grammar.

1)      Phrasal verb “Go”

2)      Past Simple vs Past Continious.
