SCIENCE PROJECT 1:
Heavy Backpacks
Background:
Doctors say it isn’t healthy for students to carry more than
ten percent of their weight in their backpacks.
Science:
Life Science; Social
Studies
Question:
Are the students in your school carrying too much weight in
their backpacks?
Materials:
Weight scales
Procedure:
1. Fill in a chart with the names of all the students in
your group.
2. Weigh all of the students in your class and calculate ten
percent of their weight. Record this on the chart.
3. Weigh all of the student backpacks (bags). Record the
weights on the chart.
4. Circle the backpacks that are overweight.
Analysis and Conclusion:
How many students in the group carry overweight backpacks?

SCIENCE PROJECT 2:
Sink or Swim:
Calculating Density of Fruits and Vegetables
Background:
Have you ever gone bobbing for apples? Why is it that some fruits and
vegetables float, while others sink to the bottom? In this experiment, you’ll
be experimenting with different types of fruit and vegetables to see whether
they float or sink. Are some fruits and vegetables denser than others?
Science: Physical Science;
Life Science
Materials: fruits and vegetables; kitchen scale; jar
to submerge the fruits and vegetables; large pan; measuring cup that measures
volume in milliliters; calculator; towel; pencil.
Procedure:
1. Place the jar into the pan. Fill it up with water. (Make
sure that no water goes into the pan).
2. Weigh your first fruit or vegetable. Note its weight in
grams.
3. Carefully lower your fruit or vegetable into the jar.
Does it float or sink? Make a note of the results.
If the fruit or vegetable sinks, remove the jar from the pan
and pour the water into a measuring cup. Measure the amount of water in
milliliters. This is the volume – the amount of space that food took up.
If the fruit or vegetable floats, push it down with the tip
of a pencil until water spills out and over into the pan. Measure
the water in milliliters.
4. Calculate the density of your fruit (or vegetable). For
each piece of food, divide the fruit’s or vegetable’s weight in grams by its
volume in milliliters.
5. In a table, make a note of the weight, volume, and
density of each fruit or vegetable.
6. Repeat this process for each fruit or vegetable. Which
ones float? Which ones sink? Is this related to the density? How?
Help: Different fruits and vegetables will also float
or sink depending on their density. In general, apples, bananas, lemons,
oranges, pears, and zucchinis will float, while avocadoes, potatoes, and mangoes
will sink.
Whether a fruit or vegetable sinks or floats depends on its
density.
What is density? It’s how heavy an object is compared to its
volume.
As apples are usually less dense than water, they will float
on top of the water. If you place an avocado into the water, it is denser than
water, so it will sink.

SCIENCE PROJECT 3:
Now You See It,
Now You Don't: How Gender Affects Our Ability to Perceive Optical Illusions
Students will investigate whether boys or girls can better
see through an optical illusion.
Science: Physical Science;
Social Studies
Materials: 10 printouts of optical illusions, a
timer/watch/clock; pen and paper
-
Why are some people capable of seeing certain optical illusions that other
cannot?
- How does the brain work hand-in-hand with the eye?
Optical Illusions are basically images concealed by other
images. Your eyes and your brain work together to play these "tricks"
on you in the form of colors, size, multiple images, object placement, etc. In
this experiment, you'll try to discover if females or males tend to do better
on optical illusion tests.
Duck-Rabbit Illusion
Procedure:
1. Test a boy and a girl at the same time. Show them one of
the optical illusions you have chosen and ask them what they see. Record their answers
and use the chart to record data.
2. Repeat the previous step for all 10 illusions.
3. At the conclusion of testing, evaluate your responses and
see which gender (boys or girls) did the best or the worst. Does gender really
play a role?
