T: Good afternoon. How are you?
PP: We are fine, thanks.
T: Glad to hear it.
T: Last lesson we spoke about winter holidays in English-speaking countries. What are the mast popular ones?
PP: Christmas and New Year.
T: Right you are. Do you also celebrate these holidays?
PP: Of course, we do.
T: By the way, do Russian and British people celebrate these holidays at the same time?(revise the information about the dates of celebration)
T: Today we are going to compare New Year and Christmas celebration in Russia and in Great Britain. First of all let’s repeat the words from the previous lesson. I’ll show you the pictures of New Year and Christmas attributes and symbols. If you know their names raise your hands and name them.
T: Well done! And now let’s find out the common attributes for Russian and British people. (ask different questions about X-mass tree, decorations, carols, etc)
T: Where can we find the information about customs and traditions in different countries? (PP give various answers)
T: Open your SB on p.52 and here you can see one more way of learning about various traditions. What is it?
PP: It’s a letter.
T: That’s right. But before we start reading let’s have a talk. Please, look at the picture and tell me what you see in it. (PP look at the picture and answer )
T: Did you guess what the letter is about?
PP: About Christmas and New Year.
T: You’re quite right. And now we are going to read Emma’s letter and do the tasks after reading. (ex.1b, answering the questions)
T: We’ve already learnt about Christmas and New Year traditions in the British family. What about your family? Do your relatives celebrate the same way? Let’s answer the questions of the 2nd exercise.
T: You remember how to write the letter, don’t you?( repeat the structure of the letter) I’m going to give you the envelopes with parts of a letter. You task will be to place them in a correct order in 5 minutes. I hope this merry song will help you. (you may turn “Jingle Bells” on)
Grammar. Word building. (to write down the words decoration, tradition, celebration, etc. on the blackboard)
T: Look at these words, please. Have they something in common? Let’s pronounce them.(PP repeat) Do you know the meaning of all these words? Be careful as some of them sound very much alike Russian words but have a different meaning.
Repetition – повторение (not репетиция)
Translation – перевод (not трансляция)
Decoration – украшение (not декорация)
На доске: We decorate our New Year tree with tinsel, lights and other decorations.
T: What part of speech do the underlined words belong to? (PP: decorate is a verb, decorations is a noun)
T: And now have a look on p.53, ex.4 and try build some more nouns from the given verbs. I’ll give you 2 minutes for this simple task.
Reading a poem
T: At the end of our lesson I want you to read a poem “Christmas Morning” on p.53 and answer my questions (What day is described in a poem? How do you know? Is the child happy? Why?).
PP : answer the teacher’s questions, express their opinion.
T: Thank you for the lesson. Your home assignment will be to write a letter to Emma and tell her about family’s New Year traditions. Good bye.
