Canada
Canada is the second largest country in the world. It covers the northern part of North America and its total area is 9,975,000 square kilometers.
Canada's only neighbor is the USA. These countries share seven of the world’s largest lakes and also have three of the world’s longest rivers. One-third of all fresh water on Earth is in Canada.
Canada's motto is "From Sea to Sea," because the country is bounded by three oceans — the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic.
The climate of the country varies from Arctic climate in the North with winter temperature 50 degrees to moderate climate with summer temperature to 33 degrees. All kinds of weather conditions and scenery are to be found there.
Canada is a union of ten provinces and two territories.
Canada has a small population, only about 27,300,000.
The capital of Canada is Ottawa. In Canada there are people of different nationalities.
Canada is a constitutional monarchy. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and Queen Elizabeth II is its official head of state. Although the Queen holds this high position, she doesn't rule. She serves as a symbol of British tradition. Her representative in Canada is the Governor General, whom she appoints on the advice of the Canadian Prime Minister. The Governor's duties are limited to symbolic, mostly ceremonial acts.
The real power belongs to the Prime Minister and his Cabinet. The Canadian Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Commons and the Senate.
There are two official languages in the country: English and French. All Canadian children have to learn both French and English at school, but Francophones and Anglophones do not enjoy learning each other's language. "We have two races, two languages, two systems of religious belief, two sets of laws ... two systems of everything," said one Canadian journalist.
English spoken in Canada is a bit different from British English: there are some pronunciation and grammar differences.
The red and white Canadian flag shows a leaf of the maple tree, which grows in North America. The maple leaf is the official emblem of Canada.
Australia
Australia is a large country lying between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Australia is the biggest island and the smallest continent in the world. Its area is about 8,000,000 square km. The population of Australia is about 18,3 million people.
People cannot live where is no water, and so most of people in Australia live in the richer south-east.
The first Australian people were dark-skinned Aborigines, and some sixty thousand still survive in Australia today. But there are about 1 percent or “original Australians”. Some live in modern cities but it is not really easy for them.
Most of population came to Australia from Britain, Ireland and other countries years ago. At present in Australia there are a lot of people from Russia.
Today Australia is an independent federative state consisting of 6 states and 2 territories. It is a member of the Commonwealth headed by the British Queen. The national language is English. But English in Australia is a bit different from British English and American English.
The capital of Australia is Canberra; the largest cities are Sidney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
In the Northern Territory you will find the red heart of Australia. And it really is red, with red rocks, red sand, and red skies in the evening. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Ayers Rock and a strange group of huge red stones called “the Olgas”.
The climate is hot and Australian boast that they can sleep out -of- doors all the year round. The sun shines in winter and in summer. The hottest summer month is January, and the coldest winter month is June. But June is not very cold. Snow and ice are rare, except the high mountains. There is not much rain, and drought is a constant anxiety. In bad times, and in the driest parts, many animals may die for want of water.
Australia is sometimes called “the lucky country”. One reason is the wonderful riches under the earth: gold, silver, iron, coal and many precious metals. The Bass Strait, of the coast of Victoria, has been one of the country’s biggest oil fields for many years.
New Zealand
New Zealand is a small and quiet country that has got total area of 269,000 square kilometers. It is situated to south-east of Australia in the Pacific Ocean.
New Zealand is an island country. It is made up of three main islands: the North and South Islands and Steward Island, and of some small ones. It is looked like Italy upside down.
Nearly 3.5 million people live in this country. The population of it is mixed. Some people came from Britain years ago and some are Maori people who lived here before the British.
The official languages are English and Maori. But English is spoken in a very unusual way in New Zealand. It’s often called Kiwi English.
Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington are the biggest cities. Wellington is the capital and it is one of its busiest ports. It is the third largest city in New Zealand. Auckland (the former capital) is the first largest city, and Christchurch is the second.
The climate is pleasant at all seasons, without much difference between winter and summer. New Zealand does not have the terrible heat of Australian summers; the oceans temper its climate and the mountains bring down quite a lot of rain. The seasons in New Zealand are also different from what they are in Britain from January to February. It is summer, from March to May it is autumn; From June to August it is winter, from September to November it is spring.
When it’s time to go to bed in Europe, it’s time to go to work in New Zealand.
New Zealand has very few native animals. The kiwi, a bird which lives in the forest and does not fly, is found nowhere else in the world. The kiwi is the national emblem of New Zealand. So the New Zealanders are often known as Kiwis.
Forests of exotic pines near the centre of New Zealand's North Island cover an area of more than 160000 hectares. This is the largest single continuous area of planted forest in the world. New Zealand has more than four hundred thousand hectares of planted forests.
New Zealand is sometimes called “The world’s biggest farm”. Dairy products, meat and wool are the main exports.
Great Britain
“Great Britain” has several different names: “Britain”, “the United Kingdom” or “UK”. There are four different countries in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, so the official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The capital of the UK is London. But each part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has its own capital: London in England, Edinburgh in Scotland, Cardiff in Wales and Belfast in Northern Ireland.
Great Britain is the island state and it’s one of the world’s smallest countries, it’s twice smaller than France or Spain. However, there are only nine other countries with more people as there are more than 56 million live in Britain, many of them in big industrial cities like London, Liverpool and Manchester.
Many people think that the weather is cold and wet in Britain
all the year round. But it isn’t! True, it sometimes rains and even snows for
days and days, but every year there are weeks of beautiful sunny weather then
the British take off their sweaters and go out to sunbathe.
The British climate has three main
features: it is mild, humid and changeable. It is never too hot or too cold.
Winters are extremely mild. Snow may come but it melts quickly. In winter the
cold is humid cold, not the dry one. The driest period is from March to June
and the wettest months are from October to January. The average range of
temperature (from winter to summer) is from 15 to 23 degrees above zero. During
a normal summer the temperature sometimes rises above 30 degrees in the south.
Winter temperatures below 10 degrees are rare. It seldom snows heavily in
winter, the frost is rare. January and February are usually the coldest months,
July and August the warmest.
The flag of the UK is known as the Union Jack. It has its history. It all began in 1603 when Scotland was joined to England and Wales. The flag is made up of 3 crosses. The upright cross is the Cross of St.Jeorge the patron saint of England. The white diagonal cross is the cross of St.Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The red diagonal cross is the cross is the cross of St.Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. All of them are on the blue background.
English is the official language. It is made up of Anglo-Saxon, French and Latin and it’s also includes a lot of words from Greek and even from Russian.
The United States of America
The United States of America, popularly called "The States", "the USA" is a country stretching across the middle of North America. It's one of the most powerful and advanced countries in the world. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and from Canada in the north to Mexico in the south.
The capital of the USA is Washington, though some people think it's New York. This famous city is the financial and cultural center of the USA.
The USA has the third largest population in the world. More than 250 million people live in the United States. The United States is a young country. Its written history is only a few hundred years old. It is sometimes called the “New World”.
This country which at one time inhabited by Red Indians, is now the home of "nation of nations". It's a real melting pot. The people of the United States are a mixture of many different nationalities. These different people brought to their new land a wonderful mixture of customs and traditions. The German brought Christmas trees. The Irish brought St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The Scots brought Halloween.
English is the national language of the country but there are some differences between British and American English. For example, a film in Britain is a movie in America, a postman is a mailman, the underground is the subway.
The national flag of the United States of America, known as "The Starts and Stripes" or "Old Glory" bears 50 stars and 13 stripes. Each star represents a present-day state and each stripe stands for one of the original colonies. The national emblems are the eagle and the buffalo. The national sport may be said to be baseball.
On the whole the USA has a continental climate. It is at the same time one of the coldest and one of the hottest countries, one of the wettest and one on the driest. The coldest regions are in the north. The climate of Alaska is arctic. The climate of the central part is continental. The south has subtropical climate. Hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico often bring typhoons.
