Me and my money.
In the latest in our series on tips for new investors, John Graham
describes how he manages his investments.

half of the money on the Stock Market and the rest I put
in the bank. I bought … 2 in three different companies and each one
pays me … 3 every year. I have a 20% … 4 in a small

My father … 10 me quite a lot of money for my studies and I still … 11

4.2.
Read the article again. Are these statements true (T) or false
(F)?
- He owes his grandmother £1,000. …
- He sold his house in London. …
- He has shares in four companies. …
- He lent the bank money to buy the house. …
- He is a lawyer. …
- He pays a lot of tax. …
- His father gives him £100 a month. …
- He spends a lot of money on his hobby. …
4.3.
Read the text once again and find the verbs in Present Simple, Past
Simple.
5. Listening
task. New words: bus fare, complain, cost a fortune, limit, make ends meet,
work out.
5.1.
You are going to listen to a conversation between two students.
One of the students, Brian, is talking about his monthly expenses. You should
listen and count how many different categories (like clothes, eating out) he
mentions.
It’s
Terrible.
Student 1: Hi, Brian.
What are you doing?
Brian: I’m just trying
to work out how much I spend a month.
Student 1: Oh, that’s
why you look so sad.
Brian: It’s terrible. I
spend about £30 a month just on books.
Student 1: That’s a
lot.
Brian: And my rent is
£50 a week. So, that’s another £200 a month.
Student 1: Year, rent’s
a killer.
Brian: And, this food,
about £30 a week. So, it’s £120 just to eat every month.
Student 1: An what
about going out and stuff? That’s cost me a fortune.
Brian: Me too. I think
about £150 a month and another £50 on eating out.
Student 1: Oh, guess what!
I’ve heard that bus fare is going up.
Brian: Great! It’s
already cost me about £7 a week just to get to college and back. That’s £28 on
transport already.
Student 1: Oh, what’s
that in the bag.
Brian: CDs. I bought 2
this morning in town.
Student 1: So, don’t complain to me about having no money then.
Brian: I like music.
Anyway, I only buy two a month, so it doesn’t cost more than, say, £20.
Student 1: Still.
Brian: It’s not easy
making ends meet. Look at these jeans. Look, I need a new pair.
Student 1: So, buy
some.
Brian: I’ve already
spent £50 on clothes this month. That’s my limit.
Student 1: Well, my
parents sent me some money this morning. So, I am off shopping. I need a new
dress.
Brian: Parents! There
is an idea.
5.2.
You will hear the dialogue again, and now put the categories in
order you hear them. 1) books, 2) rent, 3) food, 4) going out, 5) eating out,
6) transport, 7) CDs, 8) clothes.
5.3.
You will hear the recording again. This time you should write how
much Brian spends on each category every month. (Not every week). You have time
to compare answers in pairs. 1) books- £30 2) rent -£200 3) food -£120 4)
going out-£150 5) eating out-£50 6) transport -£28 7) CDs-£20 8) clothes -£50.
How much does Brian
spend every month? £648.
6. Закрепление изученного материала
Now let’s play a game «noughts and crosses». Let’s divide
our class into two groups. Each group must make sentences with the word in the
boxes. Use Present Simple (do/does) or Past Simple (did).
