Since he rose from the grave,

Blackwood has killed three men ...

... each committed at a location

that has a connection with the temple.

Therefore, the system.

Reordan, the ginger midget,

represents man.

We found his body here.

Sir Thomas, master of the temple,

wore the ox ring.

He died here.

Standish, ambassador to America ...

... where the eagle has been

the national emblem for over hundred years.

The headquarters of the Temple

of the Four Orders where he died ...

Correspondingly, the map will tell us

the location of Blackwood's final act.

So we have man, the ox, eagle.

Only the lion remaining.

The “Sherlock Holmes quiz”

Stage one: questions.

  1. Name the main characters and their occupations (at least, 7 of them).
  2. Is Holmes happy with Watson’s getting married? Why?
  3. Why did the gypsy woman called Holmes and Watson “brothers not in blood, but in bound’?
  4. Write and prepare to tell the description of Lord Blackwood (both physical and mental).
  5. Make a list of Holme’s habits.
  6. How many languages are spoken in the film?
  7. 10:14 – 10:40 (11:30) -  write a script of a dialogue. Check yourself (with the subtitles). Write down all the new words and remember them.
  8. What scene of the film impressed you the most? Why?
  9. Retell the dialogue between Holmes and Blackwood (24:30 – 26:40). What is it all about? (In your own words).

 

Stage two: T/F.

1.      Lord Blackwood was alone when he was caught by the Police.

2.      Holme’s and Watcon’s dog’s name is Gladstone.

3.      Holmes calls misses Hudson “dear”.

4.      Mary was divorced.

5.      Lord Blackwood rose from the grave without any witnesses around.

6.      Holmes is addicted to drugs.

7.      Holmes stayed alive in the explosion because of his intuition.

8.      Lord Blackwood was a magician.

9.      Professor Moriarty lives in London.

10.   Watson is living the Baker Street because of his brother’s marriage.

11.  “Clarkie, case is opened again”- the last replica in the film.

 

Stage three: replicas.

Who’s replicas are these:

  1. “Tea, Mister Holmes”.
  2. “Is it poisoned, nanny?”
  3. “Pleasure in mine”.
  4. “You do know what you’re drinking is for eyes surgery?”
  5. “You must accept that this is beyond your control…”
  6. “Recon your future, sir?”
  7. “Now clean up and make yourself presentable”.
  8. “Faith runs over reasons”
  9. “You control the police. Now use them”.
  10.  “I know that you care for him as I do”
  11.  “Everyone has a weak spot and he found mine”.
  12. “Everything is gonna be fine”.
  13. “So Moriarty was after a piece of the machine…”
  14.  “It’s the future, Watson”.
  15.  “I’ve loaded the last of your boxes, sir”.

Sherlock Holmes. Lesson 2.

  1. Part of the film: 35:50 – 120:16 (up to the end).
  2. Extra materials: Soundtrack, worksheets, paper, the web.
  3. Vocabulary: depends on your group.

  6. Other: the improvement of listening comprehension skills; the improvement of the speaking.

Show students the web, which you’ve made the last lesson. Give them a couple of minutes to revise it, than ask students in random to explain each arrow.

Stating aims

Today we’re going to watch the “Sherlock Holmes” up to the end today we will  improve our vocabulary and do some funny exercises.

 

 

Active watching + post-watching activity 1

(7m)

Pre-watching: remember the destiny of Lord Blackwood. Tell students that he was hinged and now they’re going to learn some more about him. Watching: 35:50 – 37:10 WITHOUT THE PICTURE! – sound only. Students have to imagine the picture and get the idea of what’s happening.

Ask students to share their clues. The main thing they have to understand: Lord Blackwood has risen from the grave.

 

It’s better to re-watch this scene with picture.

Active watching + post-watching activity 2

(5 m)

Watch: 37:10 – 40:56

Ask students to explain what happened. Make sure that every student got the main ideas:

  1. Lord Blackwood has risen from the grave
  2. There was another man in the cliff
  3. Holmes took watch from the corps’s pocket. 

 

You can ask students how this watch can help Holmes. After listening to their thoughts, explain that there was an address on them and now Holmes and Watson are going to visit the place and learn who that man was.

Watching: 44:42- 48:30 – discuss all the chemistry terms here:

Episode 48:10 – 55:05 – watch on the rewinding. Students don’t need to watch all the fighting scene carefully, but it might fun to watch it in the suggested way. Show them the last phrase of the episode: “Watson, what have you done?”

Watching: 59:10 – 63:08.

Give students the following worksheets. There task is to state whether this statements are true or false.

  1. Holmes was brought to the place secretly. _____________

Discuss the  task. The main aim of this task is to help students to understand the plot. Don’t concentrate on lexis too much.

After discussing – work with the web. Add new characters there: Sir Thomas Roth era; Temple of the Four Orders. State the relationships and draw arrows.

66:13 – 66:36 – ask students: Did you expect that? Do you believe that Lord Blackwood is a magician?

Watching: 71:18 – 74:42

What colony did he speak about? What is Lord Blackwood’s plan? When everything is going to happen?

 

 

You can also ask questions to define your student’s personal attitude: did you like the scene? Was it scary? etc. You also can give them a list of words to describe their feelings.

You have to know that every student understand the plot and ideas.

Active watching + post-watching activity 4

(15-20 m)

 

Watching: 88:50 – 95:19.

First, give students the script. State how many characters are there and who are they. Give them 5 minutes to read it (they can ask you the meaning of 12 words – you should write them on the blackboard. Explain that they don’t have to understand each word, but to get the idea), than discuss:

-          What is the next episode going to be about?

-          Can you tell us, what are Holmes guesses are about? What does The Order want to do? Why were people killed?

Than, watch the scene. Your students now know what is it about, so it won’t be a great problem for them to understand the speech. After watching you can discus: What was Watson’s reaction? Was it a real magic?

Worksheets – individually. See attachment 2.

In discussion try to use English mainly. However, if you see that the scene was very hard for you students to understand, you can discuss the main ideas in Russian.

Work with the web is also possible here.

Active watching + post-watching activity 5.

(15m)

Watching: 101:00- 116:00

Now we’re going to see the end of the story. Remember: Lord Blackwood is going to destroy the British Parliament and get the power and Sherlock and his friends are coming to the Parliament to stop the evil plan.

After watching ask students to describe what happened. If you see that students are tired, let them speak in Russian.

Let students just to watch. Don’t state any aims here. This part is mainly for their pleasure.

(20 m)

 

 

And now Sherlock is going to tell us what really happed and explain everything about the Blackwood’s resurrection and all the magic.

Watching: 116-120:16.

Ask students to explain everything.

After that – work with the web. Try to remember everything you know about the characters, but do it in the light of the last scene!

Now your web should be very big. Don’t forget to state such things as:

The relation between Blackwood and Coward; Mary’s attitude, Watson’s leaving the Baker Street.

Spend as much time as you can allow here. Remember the details, if you need – rewatch the scenes. Attachment 3 (with captures) can help you to remember the plot.

Enjoy the titles! You can listen to the music there.

Revision

(20 m)

Divide the group into two teams and play “The Sherlock Holmes quiz”(see attachment 4). Each correct answer – 1 point.

After the quiz give teams 15 minutes to prepare a “retelling” of the film (the web should help them). State the quiz winner-team can ask your help twice, another team – once.

Ask teams to do the retellings. After retellings explain student their mistakes!

Don’t forget to ask students about their personal attitude to the film.
