Знакомство с автором рассказа по домашнему чтению (O. Henry “The Count and the Wedding Guest”) и контроль понимания.	At home you read the story “The Count and the Wedding Guest”. Who’s the author of this story? Right you are. What do you know about him? Fine. And now I’d like to tell you some more information about his life and career. Look at the blackboard, please, and be very attentive. William Sidney Porter was born on September 11, 1862, in North Carolina. His father was a physician. When William was three, his mother died. As a child, Porter was always reading, everything from classics to dime novels. In 1876 Porter entered the Lindsey Street High School.  In 1879, he started working in his uncle's drugstore and at the age of nineteen, he was licensed as a pharmacist. In March 1882 Porter traveled with Dr. James K. Hall to Texas , hoping that a change of air would help cure a persistent cough he had developed. He took up residence on the sheep ranch and helped out as a shepherd, ranch hand, cook and baby-sitter. While on the ranch, he learned bits of Spanish and German. He also spent time reading classic literature. Porter's health did improve and he traveled with Richard to Austin in 1884, where he decided to remain. Porter took a number of different jobs over the next several years, first as pharmacist then as a draftsman, bank teller and journalist. He also began writing. Porter led an active social life in Austin, including membership in singing and drama groups. He was a good singer and musician.   In Austin Porter met Athol Estes, a seventeen years old girl, who was suffering from tuberculosis. In 1887 they got married. Athol gave birth to a daughter, Margaret Worth Porter, in September 1889. In early 90s O. Henry began perfecting his short stories which he previously had written simply to entertain friends. In 1891 Porter began working at the First National Bank of Austin as a teller and bookkeeper. At the same time Henry worked as a reporter and occasional cartoonist for newspapers. But the bank worked informally and Porter was careless in keeping his books and he might steal funds. As a consequence a little bit later Henry was arrested. In1897 his wife died from tuberculosis. One year later O.Henry was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. Porter was a licensed pharmacist and was able to work in the prison hospital as the night druggist. He was given his own room in the hospital wing. He had fourteen stories published under various pseudonyms while he was in prison, but was becoming best known as "O. Henry" . A friend of his in New Orleans would forward his stories to publishers so that they had no idea that the writer was imprisoned. Porter was released in 1901 for good behavior after serving three years. He reunited with his daughter Margaret who was already 11. Porter's most prolific writing period started in 1902, when he moved to New York City to be near his publishers. While there, he wrote 381 short stories. His wit, characterization, and plot twists were adored by his readers, but often panned by critics. In 1907 Porter married again to Sarah (Sallie) Lindsey Coleman. But 2 years later she left him. O. Henry died on June 5, 1910 because of many troubles with his health. He was a heavy drinker. He was buried in North Carolina. During his life, O. Henry wrote a great amount of short stories. Nearly all stories included his signature surprise ending, or “snapper” as he called it. He has his own philosophy of writing. “I’ll give you the whole secret of short-story writing…Rule 1: Write short stories that please yourself. There is no Rule 2.” – O. Henry “You can’t write a story that’s got any life in it by sitting at a writing table and thinking. You’ve got to get out into the streets, into the crowds, talk with people, and feel the rush and throb of real life- that’s the stimulant for a story writer.” – O. Henry, 1902. So, you see that O. Henry’s life was full of twists and turns. Was it interesting to learn some facts about this famous American author? What did you impress the most? Good. So, now let’s check what you learnt.
