Read
Sasha’s letter to the youth magazine “Shout”
One
of the worst things about my house is the lack of privacy. If I disappear into
my room for some peace, it’s guaranteed that someone will come after me,
wanting to know what I am up to. The thing is because I share a room with my little
sister, I can’t just shut the door, and keep everyone out. She’s always
complaining that’s it’s her room, too. Even worse, it means nothing is safe. I
guess she goes through all my stuff, mucks about with my toiletries, and eats
the sweets I keep in my room. If I want to keep anything secret I have to use
lock.
I
don’t know who I dislike more, my elder brother, who’s sixteen, or my younger
one, who’s eleven. My older brother is a total creep. He pushes me around a lot
and is always making nasty little comments about me. I hate being in the house
alone with him. My little brother is just a geek. He asks me embarrassing
questions about boys and stuff, and always shows me up in front of my friends.
If I’m on the phone to one of my friends, he picks up the extension and listens
in.
Although
I’m 15, my parents treat me like a baby. They don’t let me out during the week
and if I want to go to a friend’s house at the weekend, they phone up her
parents and ask what time I’ll be at home. Dad always asks me about boys,
warning me that I’m not allowed to go on real dates. He keeps nagging me about
homework and studying. He thinks I/m lazy when I sit watching the telly at
night.
The
other thing that bugs me is that I’m treated like an unpaid slave in the house.
I have to do the dishes, help with ironing… I wouldn’t object to this if
everyone in the house did their fair share, but my brothers only keep there
room clean, and my sister just acts like a baby. Mum tells me that she needs
the help and I’m the best at doing housework, but that’s because I’m the only
one who does it!
I’m
going to leave home as soon as I’m old enough. It would be great if I could get
a job and a flat when I leave school. I wish I just had one tiny room of my
own. My mates always say that I’ll miss my family once I leave , but I doubt
that!
-
Working in groups write out the reasons of Sasha’s conflicts
a.
With
her little sister
b.
With
her brothers
c.
With
Sasha’s parents
-
What is the background of misunderstanding in Sasha’s family?
(after
discussing students come to the conclusion: the roots of Sasha’s problems are
conflicts in her family based on misunderstanding)
7.
Do you have problems with your parents? Do they nag you? Do they want you to do
chores, to obey them, to be “good girls and boys”? If I’m not mistaken your
home task was to tell me about that problemsas they are written in the
student’s book.
8.Listening.
Many teens enjoy listening to modern group “Linkin park”. Listen to the song
“Numb” and answer my question: what kind of problem does the singer express in
this song.
Numb (оригинал Linkin Park)Оцепеневший (перевод )
I'm tired of being
what you want me to be
Feeling so
faithless lost under the surface
Don't know what
you're expecting of me
Put under the
pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the
undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I
take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the
undertow just caught in the undertow)
I've become so
numb I can't feel you there
I've become so
tired so much more aware
I'm becoming this
all I want to do
Is be more like me
and be less like you
Can't you see that
you're smothering me
Holding too
tightly afraid to lose control
Cause everything
that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart
right in front of you
(Caught in the
undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I
take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the
undertow just caught in the undertow)
And every second I
waste is more than I can take
I've become so
numb I can't feel you there
I've become so
tired so much more aware
I'm becoming this
all I want to do
Is be more like me
and be less like you
And I know
I may end up
failing too
But I know
You were just like
me with someone disappointed in you
9.
How can we solve our problems with parents? Grammar: Express the same idea
using the complex object.
1.
I want (they) to be my friends.
2.
They would like (I) to learn English.
3.
Our parents expect (we) to obey.
4.
You would like (they) to do chores.
5.
Mum and Dad don’t want (we) to embarrass (they).
Now
express the same in English:
1.
10.
Summing up.
So,
what is the core reason of conflicts with parents? (misunderstanding)
-
What is necessary to avoid misunderstanding? (mutual love)
What
conclusion can we make?
Students
come to a conclusion: “A difficult child is a child who is unhappy”. To be
happy means to be loved, to be heard, to be treated as equal.
The
main idea of the lesson:
Love
each other and everything will be OK. All obstacles will be overcome and all
the gentle words will be found and this cruel world will turn to you with a
kind smile. Your mother’s smile, your father’s smile, your smile…
12.
Homework
Write
a letter to 40-year-old you about your problems and what do you want your
parents to be like. So in 20 years you’ll remember it and perhaps will treat
your children as they expect you to do it .
