Many
people saw colors of a rainbow but only Newton showed, by his experiments, that
white light consists of these colors.
It is
interesting how he discovered the law gravitation. Once, as he sat at the
garden, his attention was drawn by the fall of an apple. Many people saw such
an usual thing before.
But it
was Newton who asked himself a question: "Why does that apple fall
perpendicularly to the ground? Why doesn't it go sidewards or upwards?"
The answer to this question was the theory of gravitation, discovered by
Newton.
Newton
died at the age of 84, and was buried in Westminster Abbey, where his monument
stands today.

microwave ovens / ocean liners
/ conduction or convection / cooked quickly / big and heavy / microbiological
safety
The first microwave oven was very 1)_______. At first, it was used
exclusively in restaurants, railroad cars and 2)_______— places where large quantities
of food had to be 3)_______. In fact, it took decades after the invention of
the microwave oven for it to be refined to a point where it would be useful to
the average consumer.
A large increase in the use of 4)_______ has created a greater
need for effective product design for microwave heating which ensures 5)______ while
maintaining product quality.
During conventional heating methods, the primary mechanism of heat
transfer is either 6)_______, depending of the nature of the food. In the microwave
foods heat from the generation of heat within the food itself, not from the conduction
of heat energy from hot air to the outer layer of the cooler product.

Newton,
one of the greatest scientists of all times was born in 1642 in the little
village in Lincolnshire, England. His father was a farmer and died before
Newton was born. His mother was a clever woman whom he always loved.
After
the school, Newton studied mathematics at Cambridge university and received his
degree in 1665. Then the university was closed because of the danger of plague
and Newton went home for eighteen months. It was most important period in his
life when he made his three great discoveries — the discoveries of the
differential calculuses, of the nature of white light, and of the law of
gravitation. These discoveries are still important for the modern science.
Newton had always been interested in the problems of light.

materials / modern technology
/ creep / physics / the study / size and form
Materials Science and Technology is 1)_______ of materials and how
they can be fabricated to meet the needs of 2)_______. Using the laboratory
techniques and knowledge of 3)_______, chemistry, and metallurgy, scientists
are finding new ways of using metals, plastics and other materials.
Engineers must know how materials respond to external forces, such
as tension, compression, torsion, bending, and shear. All 4)_______respond to
these forces by elastic deformation. That is, the materials return their
original 5)_______when the external force disappears. The materials may also
have permanent deformation or they may fracture. The
results of external forces are creep and fatigue.
Fatigue is the growth of cracks under stress. 6)_______ is a slow,
permanent deformation that results from steady force acting on a material.
