Shakespeare’s company received its own indoor theatre in 1609 .Still more indoor productions often came during the period between Christmas and New Year, at one of the royal palaces, where Shakespeare’s company and other leading companies gave special performances – a high honour for them.

B. Theatregoers or playgoers in Shakespeare’s day paid a penny to stand in the uncovered yard of a playhouse in front of the stage , or two pennies for a balcony seat. The richer people usually had seats in the covered galleries. Tickets to indoor theatres cost more-starting at six pence. Fashionable men about town could get a seat on the side of the stage for two shillings ( 24 pence). Spectators liked to drink wine or ale and eat different food as they watched the plays.

C. In the 17 th century the first theatre appeared at the court of Tsar Aleksey. In 1750 , the first professional theatre was opened in Yaroslavl. It had its own actors, ran many plays and was located in a new building for 1000 spectators . In 1756, the Empress Elizabeth took a part of the Yaroslavl theatre to Saint Petersburg and founded the Alexandrinskiy Theatre. The same year Moscow University students formed the Free Theatre , which later developed into the Maly Theatre.

D. Laurence Olivier was one of the most famous actors of the 20 th century. He played roles in many Shakespeare

Plays on stage and screen , including those of “ Hamlet”, “ Macbeth” ,”Othello”. King George VI gave him the rank of knight and Queen Elizabeth II made him Baron Olivier of Brighton, which allowed him to sit in the House of Lords. For his work in films , Olivier received four Academy Awards , or Oscars .

E. The names of Vladimir Nemirovich – Danchenko and Konstantin Stanislavsky are famous not only in Russia but all over the world. In 1897 , they organized a new public theatre , the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT) . Theatregoers  in other  countries watched performances with their coats on.

F. Boys or young men played most women’s roles in Shakespeare’s times. In addition to their dramatic talents , actors in Shakespeare’s times had to fight on stage with great skill , sing songs or play musical instruments , and perform dances of their day. Actors usually did not wear historically accurate costumes. They , especially central characters , wore modern dress.

G. Konstantin Stanislavsky was a  Russian stage actor and director. He developed the technique which we know as the “ Stanislavsky’s method”. Stanislavsky ‘ s method helps actors to offer  deep performance and show natural emotions  while on stage . Between 1922 and 1924 the Moscow Art Theatre travelled to Europe and the USA. Stanislavsky ‘ s method became a revolutionary technique in theatrical and Hollywood communities during the mid – 20 th century.
