open playhouses like the Globe are very good in the right weather, but indoor
theatres can operate all year round, out of the sun , wind, and rain.
Shakespeare’s company received its own indoor theatre in 1609 .Still more
indoor productions often came during the period between Christmas and New Year,
at one of the royal palaces, where Shakespeare’s company and other
leading companies gave special performances – a high honour for them.

or playgoers in Shakespeare’s day paid a penny to stand in the uncovered yard
of a playhouse in front of the stage , or two pennies for a balcony seat. The
richer people usually had seats in the covered galleries. Tickets to indoor
theatres cost more-starting at six pence. Fashionable men about town could get
a seat on the side of the stage for two shillings ( 24 pence). Spectators liked
to drink wine or ale and eat different food as they watched the plays.

the 17 th century the first theatre appeared at the court of Tsar
Aleksey. In 1750 , the first professional theatre was opened in Yaroslavl. It
had its own actors, ran many plays and was located in a new building for 1000
spectators . In 1756, the Empress Elizabeth took a part of the Yaroslavl
theatre to Saint Petersburg and founded the Alexandrinskiy Theatre. The same
year Moscow University students formed the Free Theatre , which later developed
into the Maly Theatre.

Laurence Olivier was one of the most famous actors of the 20 th century. He
played roles in many Shakespeare
Plays on stage and screen
, including those of “ Hamlet”, “ Macbeth” ,”Othello”. King George VI gave him
the rank of knight and Queen Elizabeth II made him Baron Olivier of Brighton,
which allowed him to sit in the House of Lords. For his work in films , Olivier
received four Academy Awards , or Oscars .

The names of Vladimir Nemirovich – Danchenko and Konstantin Stanislavsky are
famous not only in Russia but all over the world.In 1897 , they organized a new
public theatre , the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT) . After touring in Germany in
1906 , the MAT became known as the first theatre of Europe. The MAT had a small
practical detail : spectators took their coats off and even changed their
shoes. Theatregoers in other countries watched performances with their coats
on.

Boys or young men played most women’s roles in Shakespeare’s times. In addition
to their dramatic talents , actors in Shakespeare’s times had to fight on stage
with great skill , sing songs or play musical instruments , and perform dances
of their day. Actors usually did not wear historically accurate costumes. They

G. Konstantin
Stanislavsky was a Russian stage actor and director. He developed the
technique which we know as the “ Stanislavsky’s method”. Stanislavsky ‘ s
method helps actors to offer deep performance and show natural emotions while
on stage . Between 1922 and 1924 the Moscow Art Theatre travelled to Europe and
the USA. Stanislavsky ‘ s method became a revolutionary technique in theatrical
and Hollywood communities during the mid – 20 th century.
