Dear Donna,

I`m writing to you from the Beach Hotel. I`m here with my parents and my cousin Joe. We are having a great time here. The hotel isn`t new but very nice. All the bedrooms have got their own bathrooms.

The place is very nice.  The sea is warm. We go to the beach every day. I usually learn to water-ski  and Joe goes windsurfing . But he doesn`t do it very well. He often falls into the water.

Today it is raining .I hate this weather because we can`t go out. At the moment my mother and father are having lunch, Joe is writing invitations. We`ll have a little party for our new friends in the evening.

See you soon.

Love,

Kate

Dear Carol,

Thank you for your letter. We are having a fantastic holiday. Oakwood is a little village in the south of England with a park, a castle and some lovely gardens. People here are really friendly. The lady we are staying with is about fifty-five but she is very energetic. She is really nice.

I think we are lucky. This is our second holiday this year and we are doing just what we want to do: sleeping, eating and playing games. The sea is rather cold so we don’t swim often but we spend a lot of time on the beach. The food is lovely, too. We will be back on Tuesday, June, 21.

Best wishes,

Yours, Mary.

I am Alice. I am in my sitting room at home, talking to my teacher on the radio. Yes, I am at school!

I live in the middle of Australia, a long way from any towns or cities, so I belong to the School of the Air. Students from all over Australia belong to such school. Every day, I start at half past eight. I have two hours of radio lessons and sometimes I watch lessons on TV. After that, I have three hours of homework, then I have free time.

I don't mind going to school in the sitting room — it's fun! I like using the radio. I like Geography because I'm interested in learning about foreign countries and I like talking to my Geography teacher about her visits to Europe, Asia and America. I also like History lessons. Unfortunately, we don't have sport lessons.

I am Magnus. I go to Green Street School in Portland, the USA. We get to school by bus.

Our school is quite big. There are about 1,500 students. I don't mind going to school. The lessons aren't very difficult for me. Our lessons start at half past eight. We usually have five or six 45-minute lessons. I am interested in science and computer studies. I usually get good grades in these subjects and I don't mind having tests in English and Literature.

I like my school. I am good at sport. I like playing ball games, especially baseball, football and basketball. We don't have uniform in our school and we don't study foreign languages. Some schools in Portland teach Spanish and German. I would like to study German.

I usually come home after 3 p.m. and go to the local stadium to play baseball with my friends.

Litter is garbage – like food, paper and cans – on the ground or in the street. Where many people live together, litter is a problem. People don’t always put their garbage in the bins. It’s easier to drop a paper than to find a bin for it. But litter is ugly. It makes the city look dirty, and it spoils the view.

The wind blows papers far away. Often they are difficult to catch. When they blow against a fence, they stay there. This fence is a wall of garbage.

Litter is a health problem, too. Food and garbage attract animals, which sometimes carry disease.

Some people want to control litter. They never throw litter themselves, and sometimes they work together in groups to clean up the city. In most places litter is against the law. The law punishes people who throw garbage in the streets. They usually pay a fine, and occasionally they go to jail.

Two famous sayings in the United States are: “Don’t be a litterbug!” and “Every litter bit hurts!”

1) Litter is a problem among people.

The Appalachian Trail is a track which extends from Springer Mountain in the state of Georgia, in the south of the United States, travels through several other states and ends in the northern state of Maine at Mount Katahdin. The trail is fairly recent in origin. In 1921 Massachusetts forester Benton MacKaye had the idea of connecting a series of farms and wilderness camps for city dwellers to enjoy. Two years later the first section was opened.

At around 2,178 miles long, the Appalachian Trail is America’s longest marked footpath. It takes about 5,000,000 footsteps to walk the entire length of the trail. It is also home to more than 2,000 rare, threatened and endangered species of plant and animal life. The trail has more than 250 shelters and camp sites available for walkers. The shelters are about a day’s walk apart and are often near a water source. Walkers can also take their own tents if they do not wish to use one of the shelters. One of the largest animals on the trail is the American black bear which inhabits all the regions covered by the Appalachian Trail. However, the black bear usually avoids humans and is easily frightened away by loud noises. There are other dangers along the trail, including poisonous rattlesnakes, which are commonly found in the state of Connecticut.

You can take your pet dog with you but it must be on a lead at all times. Similarly, fires can only be lit in certain areas, usually near the shelters along the way. Additionally, no cars, bicycles or horses are allowed in the wilderness areas. Walkers are encouraged to take their rubbish home; continued observation of these simple rules will help protect the beauty of the Appalachian Trail for everyone to enjoy.

William Shakespeare, the greatest English writer of drama, was born in 1564 in Stratford-on- Avon. We do not know everything about Shakespeare’s early life. But we know that he studied at the Grammar School in Stratford, and that he became interested in the theatre when he was still a boy.

In 1586 Shakespeare went to London, where he worked in the theatre for some years before he began to write his own plays.

Shakespeare soon became well-known in London literary circles. Every play that he wrote was good news to the people of the capital. Queen Elizabeth I liked Shakespeare’s plays, and the actors were often invited to play before the Queen and later before the King James - a great honor in those days. By the end of the 16th theatre - the famous Globe Theatre.

But Shakespeare had quite many difficulties in his life. Less talented writers, whose plays were worse than his, often quarreled with Shakespeare and attacked him, the actors in his own theatre sometimes turned against him.

Now people in many countries love and honor Shakespeare for his plays, comedies and tragedies that are still modern and well-known all over the world.

9-11. 5 вариант

The story of the Native Americans – or the American Indians – is unique, tragic and inspiring. It is unique because the Indians were the original inhabitants of the American continent and experienced every phase of its European settlement. It is tragic because the conflict between the Indians and white people was parallel to the process of coming in contact with other industrialized societies. It is an inspiring story because the Native Americans, although lost much of their land in the 19th century, have survived, have defended their political and economic rights, and have succeeded in saving their identity and culture despite the knocks of modern civilization.

Today the Native Americans are full citizens of the United States. They are proud of their own cultural treasure, which they are trying to protect and maintain.

Marks of that treasure can be found all over the United States. Many of the proper names on the map of the United States – Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, Kansas – are Indian words. The Indians taught the Europeans how to cultivate crops such as corn, tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco.

About half of the Indians in the United States live in large cities and rural areas throughout the country. The rest of them live in about 300 federal reservations (land set for their use).

Today, there are about 1,4 million Native Americans, which is believed to be more than there were when the first European explorers arrived in the New World.

True or False?

1. The story of the Native Americans is one of the funniest in the history of the mankind.

2. The Indians were the original inhabitants of the American continent.

3. The Native Americans have managed to retain their identity and culture.

4. It's almost impossible to find any marks of the Indians' culture in the USA nowadays.

5. Today all Indians live in federal reservations.

My home is a windmill by Josh Summers, aged 14

My home’s different from where my friends live because I live in a19th century windmill! My parents saw it one day, and bought it. It was in poor condition, but it was repaired and now it’s fantastic! The windmill was once used to make flour from corn. The corn store used to be downstairs, where our kitchen is now, and horses came there to deliver the corn. The enormous 20metre sails are still on the front, but they don’t turn in the wind like they used to because it’s too dangerous, so birds live in them instead. There’s always a ladder up the side of the windmill so that dad can paint it and keep it a nice cream colour. He also cleans the windows, although a company comes to do the top ones as the ladder’s too short. Inside it’s like a tent with six sides, and it becomes more pointed towards the top, so the rooms get smaller. My room’s under the roof and I get a fantastic view – it’s like looking out of an airplane window. There are some other houses around now, and a new main road, but I can relax and make a noise when I play my guitar up there and no one can hear me! I can hear everything, though, like the birds when it’s quiet, which is really calming, or the very loud storms, which I can see coming towards us. And I actually find it easier to concentrate on my school work up there, as my brothers and sisters don’t want to climb up all the stairs, so they don’t disturb me! I can’t imagine living anywhere else!

   William Shakespeare

On April 23, 1564 William Shakespeare was born in Stratford - upon - Avon. His mother was the daughter of a farmer. His father was a glove - maker. William attended a grammar school in Stratford and had quite a good education. There he learned to love reading.

While he was a teenager, he married a woman some years older than himself. He had three children: the eldest is the daughter and then twins – a son and another girl. In 1587 William went to work in London leaving his family at home. Some people say that the reason was his love of poetry and theatre.

In London Shakespeare began to write plays and become an important member of a well - known acting company. Most of his plays were performed in the new Globe Theatre built on the bank of the river Thames. In 1613 he stopped writing and went to live in Stratford when he died in 1616. His plays are well - known and still acted not only in England but in the whole world.
