My name is Barney Clark. I'm thirteen, and I live
in a part of London called Richmond on the river Thames. It's far from the
centre of London and doesn't have a lot of high buildings. It's like a country
town. In Richmond Park there are deer, and from the park you can see the city
on one side, and green hills on the other side.

There are four people in my family — me, my brother Ben, who
is four years old, and my mother and father. My mum is a tourist guide for
Richmond (because a lot of tourists come to visit it) and my father works in a
college. We live in a house with my grandmother—she has a flat downstairs.

I go to school on weekdays. My favourite subjects
are art and science. But I play jazz band and practise with them every week,
and have extra music lessons too—so I'm very busy.
I.
What do I do at weekends? I go train-spotting —
that's my hobby. Train-spotting is really `collecting' the numbers of trains.
On Sundays I buy a special ticket and go all around London, and when I see a
train I write down its number in my note-book.

On Sundays, friends of the family often come to
our house for lunch. They stay all day and we usually go for a walk — in
Richmond Park, of course!

A cook,
who wanted to get a job, came to speak to Mrs Smith's house. She asked her what
dishes they liked to have and the mistress said they had three meals a day and

and showed her the electric cooker, the washing and drying machines, a

always have a wonderful time. It's
really great to ski at a full speed down the hill. Try and see yourself.

Of the three
sports — swimming, rowing and sailing —I like rowing best, because it is the easiest to continue
during the winter, when the water is too cold for comfortable swimming, and the sea is often too
rough for sailing. Even on
the coldest days I can row; only ice in the water or thick fog stops me.
