«MY
WORKING DAY»
Hi again... As you already know, I am a first-year student of
the Technical Academy. My parents live in Sochi and I study in Rostov-on-Don so
I need some housing. There are two opportunities for me: I can live in a
dormitory (a students hostel), or to rent a flat (an apartment).
I decided to rent a flat. To make the rent smaller, I also
decided to share my flat with another girl — Natasha Kozlova. She studies at
the Academy, too, and she is my best friend now. I'll tell you more about her
later.
Now, let me describe my usual working day. My classes begin
at 8:30. So on week-days I have to get up at 7:15.1 don't have an alarm clock
and usually my roommate wakes me up and my working day begins. I turn on the
radio and do my morning exercises while Natasha takes a shower. I don't take a
bath in the morning because I don't have enough time for it. I take a cool
shower (that's when I completely wake up), brush my teeth. After that I go back
to our room and get dressed. I brush my hair and put on a light make-up. Then
we have breakfast. Natasha makes breakfast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
I have to serve breakfast on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I love to
listen to the latest news on the radio while I am eating and Natasha prefers
light music.
We leave the house at ten minutes past eight and walk to the
nearest bus-stop. We live rather far from the Academy and it usually takes us
about a quarter of an hour to get there by bus. Sometimes when the weather is
fine and we have enough time we walk to the Academy. It is very healthy to walk
much.
The classes begin at 8:30 in the morning and they end at
2:00 p.m. We have lectures in different subjects. As a rule we have three or
four classes a day. Sometimes it is very hard to wait till they end.
Usually I don't miss my classes because I want to pass my
exams successfully. But sometimes I do, especially when the weather is fine and
the classes are boring.
At 11:50 we have lunch. That's my favourite time. That is the
time to share the latest news and to gossip. My friends and I prefer not to go
to the canteen and we often have lunch in a small cafe not too far from the
Academy. At 12:30 we have to be back to our classes. During the working day we
also have several short breaks that last for ten minutes.
Occasionally I have to stay at the Academy till 5 or even 6
o'clock in the evening because I go to the library to get ready for my
practical classes or to write a report. As a rule I have no free time on
week-days. So by the end of the week I get very tired.
We come home at about 7 o'clock in the evening. We eat
supper together and share the latest news.
After supper we wash dishes, drink coffee or tea and watch
TV. I prefer old comedies and Natasha likes serials or films about travelling.
Sometimes Natasha and I go for a walk in the park or visit our friends.
At about eleven at night I go to bed. I like to read
something before going to bed and Natasha likes to listen to some music.
Sometimes I fall asleep while I am reading and Natasha gets up and switches off
the light and says — Good night!

London traditionally is divided into several parts, The
City,
Westminster, the West end and the
East End. They are very different from each other.
The city is the oldest part of London, its financial and
business centre. Numerous banks, offices and firms are concentrated here. Few
people live in the City but over a million come to work here. There are two
places of interest in the City: St. Paul’s cathedral and the Tower of London.
St. Paul’s cathedral was built in the 17th century. The Tower was built in the
15th century. It was used as a fortress, a palace and a prison. Now it’s a
museum.

There are different ways of getting information — mass
media, books, travelling, visiting museums, meeting people. Which do you
prefer?
To live in the modern world is impossible without
expanding your knowledge in all spheres. There are several ways of
communicating the world to individuals — mass media, books, travelling,
museums, meeting eminent people. Of all the existing ways, there are two which
are the easiest ones, that is mass media and travelling. One more reason why I
prefer them is that they provide the fullest and the most reliable information
in the fields you are interested in. (For travelling, see 'Travelling'.)
Mass media play an important role in our life. How and
why do they shape public opinion? Mass media play an important role in our
life. They are usually defined by encyclopedias as any of the means of
communication, such as radio, television, newspapers, magazines, etc. that
reach and influence a very large audience, at least as large as the whole
population of a nation. The term was coined in 1920s with emerging of
nationwide radio networks and of mass-circulation newspapers and magazines. I
believe mass media are so influential because they can be used for various
purposes: popularisation, for business or social concerns (advertising,
marketing, public relations, and political communication), education,
entertainment, video and computer games, journalism, public service
announcements. Media include radio and television, films, various types of
discs or tapes used for music and computer, Internet, publishing on paper
(books, magazines, and newspapers).

Mass media play a crucial role in forming public opinion.
They do it in a number of ways: first, they communicate the world to
individuals. Much of the news media is made up of newsgathering by large
organizations. Just four main news agencies — AP, UPI, Reuters and Agence
France Presse — claim together to provide 90 % of the total news output of the
world's press, radio and television. Second, they reproduce modern society's
self-image by forcing attention to certain issues. They build up public images
of political figures. They are constantly presenting objects suggesting what
individuals in the mass should think about, know about, have feelings about.
Because some of the media produce material which often is good, impartial, and
serious, they have respect and authority. If we look into the reasons why the
mass media shape public opinion, we will see, first of all, that in practice
the ethics of the press and television provides a vital support for the
existing order. Second, many of the mass media in practice cater for the tastes
of some social group. Shaping the public opinion inside this group, they create
the audience which supports them financially by buying the newspaper or
watching the TV channel.
But how much do the media influence the modern society?
Early critiques suggested that the media destroys the individual's capacity to
act autonomously. Later studies, however, suggest a more complex interaction
between the media and society. People actively interprete and evaluate the
media and the information it provides.

THE MAIN PARTS OF THE SYSTEM
There are many hardware pieces in a computer system. Some
are: the system board, power supply, keyboard, mouse, hard drive, monitor and
the video card' and its drivers.
The case
The large metal box that is the main part of the computer
is called the case. The case and its contents (power supply, system board,
etc.) is called the system unit. The case has several functions:
• Protects the delicate
electronics inside.
• Keeps electromagnetic
emissions inside so your TV, cordless phone, and stereo don't go haywire when
you power up the computer.
• Can also hold the
monitor.
Don't remove the case's cover unless you need to do
something inside the unit, and always replace the cover when you are done.
The keyboard
You communicate with your computer with the keyboard. With
it, you type instructions and commands for the computer, and information to be
processed and stored. Many of the keys on the keyboard are like those
typewriter; letter keys, punctuation keys, shift keys, tab, and the
Your keyboard also has many specialized keys. The
instruction manuals for most software applications contain section describing
the functions of each key or combination of keys.
The mouse
The mouse works by sliding it around (ball down) on a flat
surface. The mouse does not work if you hold it in the air like a remote
control! The desktop is fine, but a readymade mouse pad is the best surface to
roll the mouse on. Its surface is flat and usually somewhat textured. If a
surface is IOO smooth or rough, the ball inside can slip. As you glide the
mouse, the ball inside moves in the direction of your movement. You will see
the arrow on your screen moving in unison. The arrow is called a pointer, and
the most important part is the very tip of its point.
That's the only part the computer pays attention to. To
use the mouse, slide it on the mousepad until the pointer's point is on
something, Eke a button or an icon. Then:
Click position the mouse pointer over an element and
press and release the left mouse button one time.
Doubleclick same as above except press the mouse button
twice in quick succession without moving the mouse between clicks. It may take
a little practice to not twitch the mouse when you first start doubleclicking.
Usually you doubleclick on an icon to start the program.
Drag position the mouse pointer over an element, press
and hold the left mouse button, and drag the mouse across the screen. The
pointer moves, dragging the element. At the desired location, release the mouse
button.
The pointer lets go of whatever it
was dragging, аn excellent way to practice using the mouse is to play the
Solitaire game that comes with Windows. The monitor
Your computer is not complete without the monitor, a
TVlike device that usually sits on top of the computer. The monitor displays
text characters and graphics. It allows you to see the results of the work
going on inside your system unit. The image that you see is made up of tiny
dots called pixels. The sharpness of the picture depends on the number and size
of these pixels.
The more pixels, the sharper the image. This is called
resolution.
A display adapter card is actually what builds the video
images; the or simply displays them. The display adapter for your system is
either on to the system board or is an expansion card plugged into your board.
If you sit in front of a monitor for long periods of time,
eye strain can be reduced if you follow a few guidelines:
• Use the computer in a
room with even lighting. Adjust the controls en the monitor to vary the
contrast and brightness of the display to suit the lighting in the room.
• Keep the screen
clean,
• Adjust your chair so
that you are looking down at the screen at a slight angle
• Turn the monitor away
from windows and bright lights to avoid glare. Some of the controls on the
monitor change the size and position of the image. You should set them for the
largest image without losing any part of it.
You can set a screen saver to appear on your monitor
screen if the computer sits idle for a period of time. Screen savers can reduce
wear on your screen. Windows includes a number of screen savers.
The hard drive
Unlike the floppy drive, the hard disk drive is inside the
computer's case and you cannot see ft. Usually it is referred to as drive C:.
Hard drives also hold a lot of data. The smallest hard drives Gateway 2000
offers hold more information than 100 floppies! The size of a hard drive is
measured in megabytes, or MB for short.

Тhe first computers
In 1930 the first analog computer was built by American
named Vannevar Bush. This device was used in Wоrld Wаr II to help aim guns.
Many technical developments of electronic digital
computers took place in the 1940s and 1950s. Mark I, the name given to the
first digital computer, was completed in 1944. The man responsible for this
invention was Professor Howard Aiken. This was the first machine that could
figure out long lists of mathematical problems at a very fast rate.
In 1946 two engineers at the University of Pennsilvania,
J. Eckert and J. Maushly, built their digital computer with vacuum tubes. They
named their new invention ENIAC (the Electronic Numerical Integrator and
Calculator).
Another important achievement in developing computers came
in 1947, when John von Neumann developed the idea of keeping instructions for
the computer inside the computer’s memory. The contribution of John von Neumann
was particularly significant. As contrasted with Babbage’s analytical engine,
which was designed to store only data, von Neumann’s machine, called the
Electronic Discrete Variable Computer, or EDVAC, was able to store both data
and instructions. He also contributed to the idea of storing data and
instructions in a binary code that uses only ones and zeros. This simplified
computer design. Thus computers use two conditions, high voltage, and low
voltage, to translate the symbols by which we communicate into unique
combinations of electrical pulses. We refer to these combinations as codes.
Neumann’s stored program computer as well as other machines of that time were
made possible by the invention of the vacuum tube that could control and
amplify electronic signals. Early computers, using vacuum tubes, could perform
computations in thousandths of seconds, called milliseconds, instead of seconds
required by mechanical devices.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
1.
People have thought that the environment is an unlimited source
of resources, that the atmosphere, forests, rivers and seas are capable of
absorbing all wastes. The environment supplies the economy of any country with
its resources such as timber, minerals and oil. As a result, natural resources
are becoming reduced, air and water are polluted, and the environment is unable
to absorb all its wastes.
2.
For example, waste gases cause acid rains; this leads to forest
damage and therefore reduces the resources of forests. Another problem is water
shortage resulting from unlimited use of it. The third one is destroying the
ozone layer of the Earth through pollution from plants and cars. One more
problem is damage to wildlife. It is possible that some kinds of animals can
disappear due to people's activities.
3.
Some territories in Russia are also suffering environmental
problems. Many of these problems have been caused by economic activities. Many
forests in the north of European Russia and the Far East are under threat.
4.
If we want to live in a healthier world we must learn to use the
environment carefully and protect it from damage caused by our activities.
Otherwise very soon we will have no world to live in.
2)Вопросы
1. What leads to forest
damage?

THE PROBLEMS OF ENVIRONMENT
1. One of the greatest problems of
all modern cities is the environment pollution. Every year people consume more
goods. Production of goods and services uses energy and natural resources (oil,
gas, coal, wood, etc.). All these things are used faster than they can be
replenished. Natural resources and energy are getting more expensive, and air
and water are becoming seriously polluted. The problem of environmental
pollution is well-known to most people. We have heard about it on television
and radio, and have read in newspapers and magazines.
2.The worst environment pollution is caused by the
manufacturers
who put chemical wastes into rivers
and seas. Another problem is air pollution. The air is polluted by traffic and
smog from industrial enterprises.
3.The word smog comes from smoke and
fog. Smog is a sort of fog with other substances mixed in it, which can be
harmful, even deadly. Such diseases as eczema and asthma are linked to air
pollution.
4.Materials like paper and glass
can be reused, but, unfortunately, many materials, especially plastics cannot
be reused and cannot be absorbed by the earth again. Some plastics cannot even
be destroyed. As a result of this people face the problem of preservation of
our environment. 5.All these things are very serious and people must realize
what will happen if they don't do everything possible to reduce man-made
atmospheric pollutants and smog.
2)Вопросы
1. Who is the worst
environment pollution caused by?
