Thomas Alva Edison, the world - famous American inventor and entrepreneur. Edison received in the U.S. 1093 patents and about 3 thousand in other countries. He perfected the Telegraph, telephone, video, developed one of the first commercially successful options electric bulb, invented the phonograph. He proposed to use in the beginning of the telephone conversation, the word "Hello".
In 1928 he was awarded the highest award the U.S. the congressional Gold medal. In 1930 he became a foreign honorary member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The inventions:
The first works by Edison in Menlo Park is telephony. The company Western Union, concerned about the threatened competition Telegraph, turned to Edison. Having tried many options, the inventor created the first practically valid phone microphone and introduced in the telephone induction coil, which greatly enhanced the sound of the phone. The phonograph
In 1877 Edison registered Office of the inventions of the phonograph. The emergence of the phonograph caused General astonishment. The first demonstration device was immediately implemented in the magazine "sientific American". In 1878 Edison visited Ansonia William Walesa, who worked on the electric arc lamps with carbon electrodes. Wales gave the Edison Dynamo, together with a set of arc lamps. Then Thomas began working in the direction of improvement of the lamps. In April 1879, the inventor has found crucial vacuum in the manufacture of lamps. And on October 21, 1879 Edison has completed work on the incandescent light bulb with a carbon filament, which is one of the biggest inventions of the nineteenth century. The greatest merit of Edison was not in the development of ideas incandescent lamps, and in creating viable, widespread system of electric lighting with a solid filament, with high and stable vacuum and with the possibility of simultaneous use of multiple lamps.

Kinetoskop
Kinetoskop - optical device for displaying moving pictures, invented by Edison in 1888. The patent described the format of film with perforation (width 35 mm with perforations along the edge of the 8 holes on the frame) and the mechanism frame-by-frame drawing. Watch the film could one person through a special eyepiece - it was a personal cinema. Cinema Lumiere brothers used the same type of film and similar lingering mechanism. In the United States, Edison began a "war of patents", justifying its priority on the film perforations and requiring for its use of deductions. When Georges Méliès sent US a few copies of his film journey to the moon, the Edison company had perosnal film and dozens beginning to sell copies. Edison believed that thus shall reimburse fees for patent as the films of méliès were shot on film with perforation. "Journey to the moon" helped to open the first permanent cinema in Los Angeles, one of the suburbs which was called Hollywood.

Characteristic
Edison was distinguished by extraordinary dedication and hard work. When he led the search for a suitable material for the filament of an electric bulb, it took about 6 thousand samples of materials before he found carbonized bamboo. Checking the characteristics of the coal lamp circuit, he spent in the lab about 45 hours without rest. Until very old age he worked for 16-19 hours a day.
Nikola Tesla said of his colleague:
If Edison had to find a needle in a haystack, he would not lose time to determine the most probable place of its location. He immediately with the utmost diligence bees began to examine straw for straw until he found the object of his search. His methods are extremely inefficient: it can spend a lot of time and energy and not to achieve anything, if only he will not help a happy accident. At first I sadly watched his activities, understanding that small creative knowledge and calculation would have saved him thirty percent of the work. But he had a genuine contempt for book's education and mathematical knowledge, trusting entirely to his sense of the inventor and common sense American.
