Good afternoon, dear students. Today we’ve gathered here to speak about a very
important topic. We’d like to speak about gratitude. But first of all let us
pray.
O Heavenly King,
The Comforter, the Spirit of Truth,
Who art everywhere and fillest all things,
Treasury of blessings and Giver of life:
Come and abide in us
and cleanse us
from every impurity,
And save our souls, O Good one.
When we started to think about gratitude, its meaning and importance in the
Bible, we found out that in Hebrew the word “thank” means the same as “bless”,
“praise”, “worship”. So the first thing we understood is that gratitude to God
is much more than just feeling thankful to Him for all the good things that we
have in our life.
Then we read and discussed with our teachers some verses from
the Bible.
…And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and
likewise at evening…
(1 Chronicles 23:30) [http://allbible.info/bible/kingjames/1ch/23/]
And whatsoever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of
the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:17)[http://allbible.info/bible/kingjames/col/3/]
We noticed a very interesting thing. On the one hand God gave us
this ability to be thankful when He created us. On the other hand He Himself tells
us to thank Him and worship Him. “Why does God need our thanks?” –
was our first question. Then we changed the question “Does God need our
thanks?” Then we changed the question again “Does God need our thanks or
do we need to thank Him?” We came to a very eye-opening conclusion, and
we’ll share it with you later.
There are many verses and several stories in the Bible that tell about
gratitude. But today we’d like to tell you a story about a young woman who
loved our Lord Jesus Christ so much that she did a very unusual thing.
A present for
Jesus”
A Present for Jesus
When Jesus and His disciples arrived at Bethany, near Passover
time, Martha planned a special celebration meal. It was wonderful to have
Lasarus back and it was all because of Jesus, their dear Master and Friend.
Everyone was happy that evening. They didn’t realize that in a few days He
would be arrested and cruelly put to death.
It was only Mary who realized that Jesus was heavy-hearted. She quietly left
the room and came back with a large and beautiful bottle, full of very
expensive perfume. A man would have to work for a half a year to buy such a
gift!
Mary went to Jesus and poured every drop of perfume over His bare feet. Then
she gently wiped the feet with her long hair.
Jesus was glad; it comforted Him that someone had understood and given Him such
love and care. The aroma began to fill the air all around.
But the cruel voice of Judas Iscariot broke the silence. ‘What a waste!’ he
exclaimed. ‘Think of the price of that perfume. We could have sold it and given
the money to the poor.
Jesus saw the shadow that passed over Mary’s face. Her happiness was clouded
and she looked near to tears.
‘Leave Mary alone,’ he told Judas sharply. ‘She has done something beautiful
for Me. My death is near. I shall not be with you much longer, but the poor are
always with you. You can give to them any time you want. In years to come, the
story of Mary’s love and generosity will be always told.’
This story has a very important meaning. Remember we told you at
the beginning about the meaning of the word “thank”. So in this story we see
that Mary not only thanked Lord Jesus Christ for what He did for her and her
family. She also praised and worshiped Him as God. And she was very happy to do
it.
This is our conclusion. If we remember the questions, the answer is that God
doesn’t need our thanks. We need to tank Him, because when we thank our God,
when we bless His name, worship and praise Him, we are the happiest people in
the word.
Now
let’s check how well you understood the story.
You
have done your exercises very well. And now I would like you to retell the
story about Mary and her present for Jesus.
- Who arrived
at Bethany?

Palm Sunday
Despite warnings that evil men were seeking his life, Jesus set
out for Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover- the great feast in memory of
Israel's escape from Egypt under Moses. As he came near to the city, riding on
a borrowed donkey, he was met by a great crowd.
"Hosanna", they cried. "These cheers for the Son of
David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord".
As he came to the city gate the crowd threw palm-branches before
him in the roadway - a green carpet of welcome as the donkey carried him into
the city of David (Jerusalem).
But the enemies watched the welcome, and they decided that he must
die. They were afraid that one who was welcomed as David's son would claim
David's throne.
Good Friday
Jesus knew that his enemies were plotting his death. He told his
disciples so when they met to celebrate the Passover Supper (now called Last
Supper). During the supper he took bread , broke it , and gave it to them.
"This is my body", he said, "which is broken for you! Do this in
remembrance of me". Strange words, but stranger were to follow. "You
will all desert me", he said, "and one of you will betray me."
"I will never desert you," said Peter stoutly.
"You will," replied Jesus sadly. "Before the cock
crows you will say three times that you never even knew me."
They went out from supper to a moonlit olive garden. There, while
Jesus was praying, soldiers came, led by Judas- Jesus' own disciple. They
arrested Jesus and marched him off to the High Priest, while the disciples ran
away in the darkness, all except John and Peter. They crept along behind the
soldiers to see what would happen.
Crucifixion
At the palace of the High Priest they put Jesus on trial.
"Are you the Messiah?" asked the High Priest, with all the gravity of
his office.
"I am," said Jesus calmly.
"Blasphemy," they cried, and they sentenced him to
death. They arranged for him to be taken before Pilate, the Roman governer,
first thing in the morning for only Rome could confirm and carry out a death
sentence.
Peter and John were in courtyard. As Jesus was led away from his
trial the cock crew, and Peter burst into tears. For now he remembered what
Jesus had said at the supper table, and indeed three times Peter had denied
knowing Jesus.
In the dawn light they led Jesus to the great open space in front
of Pilate's residence, and demanded that their sentence of death be confirmed
and carried out. Pilate questioned Jesus but could not find that he had done
anything wrong.
"We have a law," cried the High Priest, "and by
that Law he deserves to die."
Led by agitators the crowd now started to chant, "Crucify!
Crucify! Crucify him!" Afraid that there would be a riot, Pilate gave in.
He called for a bowl of water, and there at the top of the steps he solemnly
washed his hands in sights of all the crowd.
"See," he said, "I am innocent of the blood of this
just man. Do with him as you will."
They led Jesus outside the city wall, and there between two
thieves on a hill called Calvary (Golgotha) they crucified him. One of the
thieves jeered at Jesus: "If you are the Son of God, get us down off these
crosses." But the other thief rebuked him. "At we've got what we
deserve," he said, "but he hasn't done anything wrong." Then
turning to Jesus he said, "Master, when you come to your kingdom, remember
me."
Jesus replied slowly, for death was very close, "Indeed I
tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
The sun rose high to noon, and the sky grew dark with menace as if
the world would end. At about three in the afternoon Jesus cried with a loud
voice: "It is finished." and so he died. But this voice sang with
victory, so that the officer in charge of the execution said in awe,
"Truly, this was the Son of God."
