  • What is the most popular month for you (the British)? Why?

Right you are. So, today our lesson is devoted to Christmas – it is a magical, full of emotions holiday. (Slide 1)

    1. Jesus’ birthday

  • What is the meaning of the word “Christmas”?

This word comes from Latin and means “Christes Messa” (Slide 2)

Everybody of you has his own birthday which is celebrated with a light pie and tasty lemonade. But this occasion is something special; this is birthday of Jesus, our Savior. He was born on the 25-th of December, nearly 2.000 years ago. Are you interested how it happened? So read. Before reading study new words from the text.

Pupils read the text about Jesus’ Birthday. (5 min).Long, long ago in the town of Nazareth the carpenter Joseph lived. Joseph had a wife, Maria. The god’s angel once came to her and said: «You will give birth to a son and give him the name of Jesus. He will be great as the son of the God».It happened so that Joseph and Maria had to go to a Judah town. While they were there time came for Maria to give birth for a child. So Maria gave birth to her first son, swaddled him and put into the manger, because there was no room in the inn. In that country there were shepherds in the fields. The God’s angel appeared before them and said…Shepherds said to each other, «Let’s go to the town and see what happened».They hurried and they saw Maria, Joseph and baby in the manger.Shepherds told the happy parents everything that the angel had told them, and everybody wondered. So happened the birth of the great Jesus, which is celebrated so many centuries as Christmas. Such scenes as you have seen are played in American families on Christmas. But the story about Jesus is not finished. When Jesus was 30 years old, he began his service: he cured sick people, he raised them from dead, taught them love and kindness.Simple people loved him for that, but the high priests, elders and scribers did not like him.So once, before the Easter they decided to find the God’s son and ruin him, but did not know where to look for him.So then, one of Jesus apostles, Judas, suggested to betray his teacher, and was given 30 silver coins. So in the evening, when Jesus and the 12 apostles gathered for the secret (dinner, the god’s son foretold that one of twelve’s would betray him. And so happened. After the dinner Jesus and men went to the garden, Judas came near and kissed him. It was the sign to recognize Jesus among others.Jesus was seized. The people sword him and beat him. Then they took him to Pilate, procurator, and began to blame him for lewdness. Pilate and the king Nerod did not find any guilt, but the people began to shout, «Crucify him! »Jesus was crucified, and people laughed at him.At six o’clock it became dark. The sun grew dark when dying Jesus said,«Father! Into your hands I commend my spirit».So the greatest of men died to raise from dead and to rise to his father to rule us and defend from troubles. So there are the laws of life which all the people must follow to become happy:1. Honors your father and your mother and you will live long.2. Don’t kill. Murder is the most dreadful sin. You have no right to take away another’s life.3. Leave the lascivious thoughts and affairs.4. Don’t steal. Secret always becomes evident.5. Don’t lie. It is prohibited to slander, to gossip and condemn.Live the Christian laws and you’ll be happy.

Have you finished? OK. Let’s try to retell this story according to the slides. Do it in chain, one by one.(Slides 3-4)

Students retell the text according to the slides, describing slides.

Well done my dears.

2Follow-up.
Our lesson-festival is going on. One of the symbols of Cristmas is Santa Clause. How does he look like? Can you describe his room? (Slide 5)

Another popular symbol is -Christmas tree. By the way, where did this tradition come from? (Prince Albert Queen Victoria’s husband missed his country very much. So he ordered to bring the fir tree to resemble his country). (Slide 6). Imagine that you are a translator and try to translate the info given on the slide into English.

In the centre of London at the Trafalgar square stands enormous green tree, gift from people of Oslo. In every house there stand evergreen trees, because the evergreen trees are the symbols of eternal life. Under the Christmas tree they put a manger with Christ baby.

The house is decorated with twigs of mistletoe and holy.(Slide 7) Holy, because before death Jesus was wearing the garland of holy, and mistletoe is the symbol of love and reconciliation under which a boy may kiss a girl, asking pardon for the pranks. On Christmas we must forgive each others all offences and ask pardon for everything. On the Christmas Eve there is a fuss in towns, everybody’s making preparations. Offices are closed at 1 o’clock, but shops are working. Postmen hurry to deliver millions of Christmas cards. (Slide 8)

2.1 Do you like sending or receiving greeting cards?

Would you like to wish a merry Christmas to your friend in English? What wishes do you know?

(Slide 9). We have 2 mixed wishes here. Your task is to rewrite these wishes and guess the correct version.

I’ve asked you to bring hand-made greeting cards. So you can fill it with these wonderful greetings and present it to your friend. Well done!

2.3 There is no holiday without songs. What Christmas songs do you know? What songs can you sing?

Young people in the streets are singing Christmas songs, collecting money for poor people.

(Slides 10-11) We are going to learn one of the most famous Christmas song – Jingle Bells.

  1. Listen

  2. Read and translate

  3. Sing along

They ring so merrily wishing everybody Merry Christmas!

2.4 The main event of Christmas.

But the main event of Christmas is the Christmas dinner with traditional turkey or goose, pudding and Christmas presents.(Slides 12-13) Christmas is the family event, all are gathering at one table, act the scene about Christ birth, play games, sing Christmas songs and tell dreadful stories

    1. Rounding of

Now my dears, let me check how attentive you were during the lesson and do this multiple choice test. It is not difficult.

Your homework is to get ready to retell Jesus’ history and learn by heart the song.

Well it’s time to finish our lesson. Thank you for attention. You were very active. Have a nice day. Merry Christmas. .(Slide 14)

A CHILD HAS COME FROM HEAVEN
 By G.Br. Burket

A child has come from heaven
To bring the waiting earth
New Hope and joy and meaning
By His incarnate birth.
A child has come from heaven
As love made manifest,
That hearts which will receive Him
May be forever blest.
A child has come from heaven
To teach each eager mind
Man’s vast potentiality
To love and serve mankind.
A child has come from heaven
To lead where He has trod
The path of truth and righteousness
That keeps man close to God.

AWAY IN A MANGER

Away in a manger no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing the poor baby wakes,
But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love the Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me Lord Jesus I ask you thee to stay,
Close by me forever, and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And take us to heaven, to live with thee there.

WE THREE KINGS

We three kings of Orient are;
Bearing gifts we traverse afar--
Field and fountain, moor and mountain--
Following yonder star.

chorus
Ohoh
Star of wonder star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guiding us to thy perfect light.

Glorious now behold him arise:
King and God and Sacrifice.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
Earth and heaven replies.

WHEN DOES SANTA COMES?
By J.P. Jhomson

He comes in the night!
He comes in the night!
He softly and silently comes,
On pillows of white,
Are dreaming of bugles and drums.
He goes through the snow
Like the ship through the foam,
While little white snowflakes swirl.
Who tells him? No one knows!
But he finds the bedside.
Of each good boy and girl.
He comes in the night!
He comes in the night!
He softly and silently comes,
On pillows of white,
Are dreaming of bugles and drums.

More about Christmas

Perhaps no other holiday has developed a set of customs and symbols as rich as that of Christmas. It’s as if every culture had something lovely to contribute just like the Magi on that distant night in Bethlehem. Ancient Romans lit candles to ward off evil, and to convince the sun to shine again. In Victorian times, candles came to represent good will. They were often placed in windows during Christmas season as a sign to passersby that shelter and warmth could be found within. Traditions to make Gingerbread houses and to hang small toys, candies and other goodies on the Christmas tree came from Germany. The custom of hanging stockings on the mantel to be filled with treats and presents is said to have originated in Norway. The story comes from the 1800’s when the father of three young maidens could not afford a dowry for his daughters to be married. From his castle, St. Nicholas heard of the poor misfortune of the maidens, and secretly threw three bags of gold coins down their chimney. It is said that the gold coins landed in the girls’ stockings, which were hanging in the fireplace to dry. The first written story about the legend of Santa Claus and his eight reindeer was “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, penned by Clement Moore in 1823. The legend is taken from Russian stories of Father Frost arriving in villages in a sled drawn by reindeer. And certainly everyone knew that he was coming thanks to the ringing bells.

Translate into English.(oral translation)

Rewrite the following wishes to get the correct version.

  • May you spend the festive season
  • Remembering you at Christmas
  • In a most delightful way
  • With a cheery note to say
  • So many lovely presents
  • Hope you find beneath the tree
  • When you wake up Christmas morning
  • You’ll be happy as can be!
