Listening for gist.
Imagine,
please, that we are going to visit the Prehistoric Animal Museum. Listen to
the guide who will tell you about the prehistoric animals. Write down letters
for the pictures A to D in your exercise books and put the pictures in the
same order as the guide talks about the animals. There is one extra picture.
Tape script
Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Prehistoric Animal Museum. I'm
Ann Anderson, your guide, and I'm going to tell you about some amazing huge
creatures such as woolly rhinos, mammoths and sabre-toothed cats. Feel free
to ask questions. Well, let's start here. You can see what the Earth looked
like about 10 thousand years ago. There was ice and snow everywhere. These
animals look like elephants. Look! They're eating leaves. They are mammoths.
They were really huge animals and had long thick hair. Oh! Is it a cat? Or is
it a tiger? It has big teeth. Why are they so big? It's a sabre-toothed
tiger. Its teeth are just huge, very frightening. They were dangerous angry
animals and ate meat. And I think it's a beautiful animal. Even the teeth.
And where are the dinosaurs? I can't see any. It's because dinosaurs
disappeared long before that time. Mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers lived at
the same time as early man. People hunted and ate mammoths. And I'm sure they
were afraid of sabre-toothed tigers. Now let's look at this exhibit. Can you
name it? It looks like a rhinoceros, doesn't it? In fact, it's a woolly
rhinoceros. It lived in Siberia.
