Aims: - to revise / introduce lexis to describe events;
to provide practice in reading and listening for specific information;
to revise Modals Verbs and enable the students to give advice;
to teach the students to plan their work;
to encourage students to share opinions and solve problems working in pairs and groups.
Aids and materials: Student’s book p. 48; whiteboard; computer; cards.
Type of lesson: reading and listening
Anticipated difficulties: some unknown words and phrases (Pilgrims, the Mayflower, settle, survive, feast, harvest, fall=autumn).
To set context and get Ss interested
"Did you do anything interesting yesterday?" Did anything interesting happen to you yesterday? Did you have a celebration yesterday? And at the weekend? Have you received any interesting information recently?"

Hi! How are you? Thanks for your letter, it was nice to hear from you again. I’m far away from Moscow and I’m writing this letter to ask you for help.
I have to write a script for a film for schoolchildren about an American feast. As far as I remember, it’s based on the historic event all Americans know about, something about the Mayflower, the Pilgrims, the place they settled, their survival and the harvest they grew in the fall of… don’t remember the year.
Could you please help me with the history of the feast, the tradition of its celebration, the food they celebrate with?
Well, I’d better go now as I have some work to do. Write back soon!

Let's plan our work! We have to answer three questions. Does the text we've just listened give an answer to any of these questions? How can we find out information to answer 2 more questions?
We have to write a letter to Tatiana. Do we need any special phrases to give Tatiana advice?
So, we will think our work is done if we
1. find out information,
2. remember the phrases to write in our letters
3. be able to say correctly with the necessary phrases what we are going to write about (in groups). Groups will be responsible for one aspect only. Each of you will have to say 1-2 sentences on the topic.
