CHRISTMAS IN ENGLAND
The first celebrations of Christmas date back to the IV century. The Roman Catholics originated this festival. Christmas in England began in AD 596, when St. Augustine landed on its shores with monks who wanted to bring Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons.
Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December as the day of birth of Christ Child.
The 24th of December, Christmas Eve, is quiet. During Christmas Eve, groups of carol singers holding candle lanterns go from house to house singing traditional Christmas songs.
One of the modern Christmas songs You will hear right now
MARY, DID YOU KNOW Clay Aiken
Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy would one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your Baby Boy has come to make you new? This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you.
Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy would give sight to a blind man? Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy would calm the storm with His hand?
Did you know that your Baby Boy has walked where angels trod? When you kiss your little Baby you kiss the face of God. Mary did you know...
The blind will see. The deaf will hear. The dead will live again. The lame will leap. The dumb will speak The praises of the Lamb.
Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation? Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your Baby Boy is Heaven's perfect Lamb? The sleeping Child you're holding is the Great, I Am.
Nativity plays are also very popular at Christmas time. Christmas Crackers are pulled at the Christmas dinner table. They may contain a coloured paper hat, a small toy, a joke or a riddle.
On Christmas morning, the family traditionally open their presents which are found under the Christmas tree.
Most families have a Christmas tree in their houses for Christmas. The decorating of the tree is usually a family occasion, when everyone is helping. Christmas trees were first popularised in England by Prince Albert in the 19th century.
In Trafalgar Square in London, you can see the main Christmas tree in England. They bring it from Norway as a gift.
Holly, ivy and mistletoe are used to decorate homes.
Children believe that Father Christmas or Santa Claus leaves presents in stockings. They hang them by the fire or by their beds on Christmas Eve.
Children write letters to Father Christmas, toss them into the fireplace because Father Christmas reads the smoke.
Long-before Christmas the English begin to send Christmas cards. The first Christmas card was printed in1843.
Christmas crackers are pulled at the Christmas dinner table. They may contain a coloured paper hat, a small toy, a joke or a riddle.
The main Christmas meal is usually eaten at lunchtime on Christmas Day. It is traditionally roast turkey or goose. Dessert is often Christmas Pudding. In addition, English housewives make fantastic Christmas Cakes. And, of course, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without chocolate.
At 3 p.m. Queen Elisabeth II gives a special Christmas speech.
In England the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day. At that day, people opened the Christmas boxes and shared the contents with the poor. The Christmas box was a wooden or clay container where people placed gifts.
On Boxing Day people visit each other. The 'serious' part of Christmas is over, and they are having fun. The kids are on holiday until the New Year.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME
