      BOOKS. Pleasure of Reading.
Books are full of many things
That I would like to know.
Books are full of greatest men
      That lived long, long ago.

      Riddles.
      I have many leaves,
      I am not a tree.
      I am something nice
      Come and read me.
I am neither a rhyme nor a song,
I can be short or very long,
I can be funny or quite sad,
To read me you will be glad.

      Books are full of countries
That I would like to see.
      Books are full of people
That I would like to be.
      Books are full of children
That I would like to meet.
Books are full of sweet fruit
That I would like to eat.
      Books are full of mountains
That can be high or low.
      Books are full of flowers
That I would like to grow.

      11 слайд

Long, long ago the people of Egypt made paper from the tall grass that grows on the banks of the river Nile.
On the stalk of this plant there grew a white skin.
People took off this and laid heavy things on it
until it became dry and flat.
Then because it was white and flat.
This grass is called the papyrus.

      Paper – бумага;
      Heavy – тяжёлый;
      Flat – ровный.

Later people used the skins of sheep and goats.
The first books were very large and heavy.
Clay tablets survived until the present day.
The people who made books worked very slowly and very hard.
Only in the 15th century the first printing presses
appeared in Europe. But the first to invent printing were the Chinese.

Now we are ready to start.

    Текст 1 для аудирования №1.

    Speaker 1.

~ Oh, I love novels, especially if they have a good plot. I started reading them

when I was 12. And I still read at least one novel a week. My own life isn't

terribly exciting. Apart from my work, which is very interesting, nothing much

happens. In the novels I read there's always a lot going on, lots of thrilling

events, and I can share in the experiences and problems of the characters.

    Speaker 2.

Well, I used to read only short stories. That changed when I moved to a

new city and found myself in a job I didn't really enjoy. I would get back home

at about 5 p.m., make some supper and sit down to read a novel for the rest of

the evening. Many of them are pretty unbelievable stories, and not particularly .

well-written. It's not as if you can imagine yourself in any of those situations,

but the thing is they take my mind off whatever's worrying me. I've had long

conversations about this with friends who think I should read better quality

stuff, but I know what I'm doing.

    Speaker3 ..

Reading is an activity that keeps me occupied: I love novels, especially

historical novels and science fiction. It's like living in another world. Historical

fiction and science fiction move me back and forth in time. I am particularly

captivated by characters who go through dangers to complete their mission.

It's a pity we won't be able to see the future. Novels make it possible for us.

    Speaker  4.

Why do I like reading novels? I used to read novels just so as to see how

my favourite characters solved their problems. 1 thought I could then apply

that to my own problems! I always choose novels that are in a clear style, because

I find complicated language difficult. And also I like the stories to be

about countries and cultures I know well, because then I can understand the

    characters better.

    Speaker 5.

I think reading novels is helping me a great deal ir my studies, and although I haven't got

much spare time, I always make a point of reading a

couple of hours in the evening. I'm in my last year at secondary school, and

frankly, reading novels is an excellent way of learning how people live in other

countries, how they communicate with each other, what problems they have.

    TASK I:

A Novels are good for improving language skills

B Novels make my life more exciting

C Novels teach me how to act in certain      situations

D Novels are a good  subject of  conversation

E Novels increase my knowledge of other countries

F Novels allow me to travel through time

Interviewer: It's great to have you with us today. So ... how did you start travelling?

Writer: Well, as a child, I travelled a lot with my family. We did some fantastic trips, like cycling through Europe, when I was 13. By the time I was 16 I had visited 19 countries!

Interviewer: Mmmm ... And how did you start writing?

Writer: When I travelled I always wrote a diary. I didn't want to forget all the things that I had seen and experienced. So 1wrote it all down. At first, it was just facts. Then I added my feelings and stories about the places and the people.

Interviewer: It's sometimes difficult to get started as a writer ... What was your first 'break' as a travel writer?

Writer: It was luck really. I had lived in Turkey for about two years. Then a friend of mine, who worked for a travel company, said he needed someone to write a travel guide about Turkey. So I did it! Other writing jobs came from  that.

Interviewer: And what is the most difficult thing when you travelling?

Writer: The language can be difficult. I love talking to people. But sometimes it's hard work when you can't speak the language. Anyway, being a travel writer really is a dream job!

You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds)

Текст1.  A Journey with Mark Twain.

1 One day one of Mark Twain’s friends said he had lost his money and asked Mark Twain to pay his train fare for him.

2 “My friend here is a very strange man. When he travels on a train, he does not like to sit on the seat. He prefers to lie on the floor under the seat.”

3 Later, however, when the conductor came to ask for the tickets, Mark Twain gave him two tickets – one for himself and one for his friend. Then Mark Twain explained:

4 Mark Twain, as everybody knows, was a famous American writer. He wrote many stories which are still popular today. Mark Twain was also famous in his days as a speaker. In his speeches, Mark Twain always liked to tell funny stories. He also liked to listen to funny stories and play jokes on his friends.

5 “But I haven’t got enough money to pay both your fare and mine, “Mark Twain said.

“Well, that’s too bad,” said his friend. “What shall I do then?”

6 “I’ll tell you what we can do,” said Mark Twain. “We can get on the train and when the conductor asks the passengers for the tickets, you can get under my seat.”

Текст2.    A story about Mark Twain.

1         “Mark Twain, people say that you can tell very funny stories. I hope that during your lecture you will tell a story that will make my uncle laugh. He hasn’t laughed for ten years.”

2         “I know,” the man said. “He hasn’t laughed for ten years. But I didn’t tell you that he hadn’t heard anything for ten years. He is deaf.”

3 After the lecture, the club member came to Mark Twain and said, “Thank you, Mr Twain. I have never heard so many funny stories.” “They were not funny enough for your uncle,”  Mark Twain answered. “He didn’t even smile.”

4    Mark Twain, the famous American writer, was well-known as a lecturer. Literary clubs often invited him to speak. Before one of his lectures a club member came to him and said:

5 “ I’ll do my best.” Mark Twain said.  When he began his lecture, Mark Twain noticed the club member. He was sitting in front of him with an old man who had a very sad face. Mark Twain began to tell his jokes, one after another.

6 “ I told long jokes  and short jokes, new jokes and old jokes,” Mark Twain told his friends. “ I told every joke I knew and soon everybody was laughing. Everybody – but not the old man.  He was looking at me with cold blue eyes. I couldn’t make him laugh, and I tried again and again. But nothing helped…”

    Little Red Riding Hood Diary.

Morning. I woke up early in the morning though I had planned to sleep until midday because it was Sunday. I had planned to mix with my friends and go to disco but… my mum asked to go to my sick grandma. Sometimes it is good to have a lot of relatives but it’s boring when they are sick.

Afternoon. I took a bag full of some delicious food and of course my mobile phone to be in contact with my mum and walkman to listen to music on the way

A terrible accident occurred in our forest One of the leaders of the wolves” pack was found dead and unskined. The suspect is Little Red Riding Hood who was seen in wolf skin coat yesterday. The police offer a reward of 1000 pounds for any helpful information.

    A letter of complaint.

    Dear Sir,

I am writing to you to complain about the problem of destructing of wolves in our forest.

As a Green Peace member I am very worried that the population of wolves is going down.

I think the problem lies in bad upbringing of the younger generation. The girl named Little Red Riding Hood killed one of the respectable members of our community and made a fur coat out of him.

I declare, it is not a point of hunting but a point of killing the animals.

You should take some steps to save the animals in our forest.

    Sincerely yours,

Green Peace Member Small Bad Wolf.
