Teacher: -Hello, my dear children, friends and teachers! There are many holidays in our country and in English – speaking countries. But the holidays we like most of all are New Year’s Day and Christmas day. People prepare for these holidays beforehand: they send greeting cards, buy presents, make fancy dresses and decorate their houses. And when the holiday comes they congratulate each other singing songs and reciting the poems. Today we are going to speak about “Christmas in Great Britain”.  Some pupils have prepared the interesting information about history of this holiday. They are: Djavatova Madina, Shakhbanova Zarema, Imanova Aisarat and Mirzakhanova Etara. They will help me to lead our Christmas party.

II.

1: (“What is Christmas”?)

Christmas Day, December 25, is probably the most popular holiday in Great Britain. It is a family holiday. Traditionally all relatives and friends give each other presents. They decorate their houses in the traditional way that is the Christmas trees are set up in houses, in the streets and churches. The Christmas trees are always decorated with fairy lights, angels and small toys. In addition little packets with nuts, candies and special biscuits are hung on the tree. Presents are put under the Christmas tree.

Pupil 2: (Слайд 2: “Christmas Eve”)
- On the eve of the Christmas children hang their stockings so that Santa Claus could put presents into them : oranges, sweets, nuts and if the child didn't behave properly Santa Clause can put there a piece of coal as punishment. Do you know who is Santa?
3: Santa Claus”)
-Santa Claus got his name from a man known as St.Nickolas who lived in Asia in the fourth century. He gave his wealth to the poor and often to children. After he died the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon the Dutch name became Santa Claus.

Pupil 3: (Слайд 3: “A Christmas Carol”)
-Carol singing is an essential part of Christmas. Carols may be traditional or by known composers they can express different feelings. Usually children come around in the evening to the front doors and start singing carols and the people living in these houses give children candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank them for carol singing. Today we shall present such famous Christmas carols as “Ring the bells”, “We wish you a merry Christmas” and others.

Pupil 4: (Слайд 4: Christmas Lunch”)
-A typical Christmas lunch includes turkey with cranberry sauce and pudding. Every young woman in each house cook a special Christmas dinner. Usually a coin or two are hidden inside the pudding and part of the fun is to see who finds it. After the lunch they go to the sitting room to listen to the Christmas speech of the Queen, shown on TV or sing Christmas carols.

Pupil 5: (Слайд 5: History of Christmas Festival )

- Christmas is the main public holiday in Britain. This Christian Holy day is held on the 25th of December in honor of the birth of Jesus Christ.
People usually spend time with their families. They often see it as a time of merry-making and present – giving, wishing each other a merry Christmas and happy new year. On Christmas Eve some people go to a special church service called Midnight Mass at 12 o’clock at night.

Pupil 6: (
6 : The Christmas Tree) -People put presents under Christmas trees decorated with coloured balls, fairy lights, tinsel and baubles. The Christmas Tree became popular in England in 1841 when Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert brought a Christmas tree from his native Germany and put it Windsor Castle . Every year people of Norway send a Christmas Tree to London. It stands in Trafalgar Square, in front of the National Gallery and is beautifully decorated.

Pupil 7: (Слайд 7: Christmas Cards)

-Christmas Cards are a part of Christmas celebrations. The tradition of sending Christmas cards appeared in 1846. People send them to congratulate their relatives and friends. The cards often show pictures of the birth of Christ, Santa Claus, Christmas Tree, Robin a bird with red breast or the scenes of old-fashioned CHRISTMAS. In the middle of the 19th century the Post Office dressed its postman in bright red coats. People called them “robin postmen” and almost all the early cards showed a robin.

Pupil 8: (Слайд 8 : Christmas dinner)

-The traditional meal consists of turkey served with potatoes and vegetables. This is usually followed by Christmas pudding. If the pudding is made at home, Some people like to hide a coin in the Christmas pudding and make a wish, whoever gets the piece of pudding with the coin in on Christmas day is especially lucky and their "pudding wish" will come true! Other traditional food include mince pies and Christmas cake.

III.

- Thank you dear, now we know the history of this holiday. I think somebody is absent today. Who is absent today? (Santa Claus) Let's call him!

Santa Claus is coming to town (Frank Sinatra)

Oh! You'd better watch out, You'd better not cry, You'd better not pout I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town!

He's making a list, Checking it twice, Gonna find out who's naughty or nice, Santa Claus is coming to town!

He sees you when you're sleeping; He knows when you are awake. He knows if you've been bad or good, So be good for goodness sake!

Oh! You'd better watch out, You'd better not cry, You'd better not pout I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town!

IV.

- Santa Claus: Hello everybody! Nice to see you again! I enjoyed your Christmas party last year, that's why i decided to visit your school again! I have some presents to you, but before tell me please some Christmas poems!

Christmas is for Children

Christmas is for children –

at least that's what they say,

It's time of wide-eyed wonder,

a magic holiday

When candy canes and gingerbread

fill tummies with delight

And little sleepyheads try hard

to stay up through the night.

Yes, Christmas is for children

anyone will tell you so.

The twinkling, colored lights on trees

make youngsters' eyes just glow!

Each package and each stocking

is approached with childish joy

And toys bring squeals of laughter

from each eager girl and boy.

Yes, Christmas is for children –

all they say is true.

How wonderful that at Christmas time –

grownups are children, too!

Holly Jolly Christmas

Have a holly, jolly Christmas;
It's the best time of the year
I don't know if there'll be snow
but have a cup of cheer
Have a holly, jolly Christmas;
And when you walk down the street
Say Hello to friends you know
and everyone you meet.

Oh Ho the mistletoe
hung where you can see;
Somebody waits for you;
Kiss her once for me
Have a holly jolly Christmas
and in case you didn't hear
Oh by golly have a holly jolly Christmas this year

Ring, Christmas Bells

Ring Christmas bells, merrily ring,

Tell all the world, Jesus is King,

Loudly proclaim with one accord

The happy tale, welcome the Lord

Ring Christmas bells, sound far and near,

The birthday of Jesus is here,

Herald the news to old and young,

Tell it to all in every tongue

Ring Christmas bells, toll loud and long,

Your message sweet, peal and prolong!

It’s Christmas, Merry Christmas

It’s Christmas, Merry Christmas!

Yes, it’s Merry, Merry Christmas!

It’s time for hanging stockings

It’s time for riding sleighs,

It’s time for jolly greetings

Snow, and holly, overeating!

Oh, I love you Merry Christmas!

You are the best of holidays!

by Elsie Melchert Fowler

The wind is whispering secrets;

Its voice is soft and low.

There are white and wintry secrets

In the quiet-falling snow.

Hear secrets in the footsteps

Of the people on the street,

And in gay, ribboned packages

Of everyone you meet.

There are merry secrets twinkling

In the eyes of many a child.

Secrets kept by Mom and Daddy –

When you asked they only smiled.

Oh, our world is full of secrets,

Now steal quietly away

Till they open up like magic

On a wondrous Christmas Day!

Time for Christmas
(From The Charlie Brown Christmas Special)

Christmas time is here,
happiness and cheer,
fun for all that children
call their favorite time of year.

Snowflakes in the air,
carols everywhere,
olden times and ancient rhymes
and love and dreams to share.

Sleigh bells in the air;
beauty everywhere;
yuletide by the fireside
and joyful memories there.

Christmas time is here;
we'll be drawing near;
oh that we could always see
such spirit through the year,
such spirit through the year.

Memories are a special house

We build inside ourselves

Where love and laughter linger,

Where all our past life dwells.

On holidays like Christmas

We can draw upon the store,

Reliving happy times

And feeling all that warmth once more.

Wherever we may travel,

This house is always there

To help to blend the old and new,

To build on… grow… and share.

This house can never get too full,

Just grow from floor to floor,

Because the joy of memories

Is always making more.

A Christmas Eve

On window panes, the icy frost

Leaves feathered patters, crisped and crossed,

But in our house the Christmas tree

Is decorated festively

With tiny dots of colored light

That cozy up this winter night.

Christmas songs, familiar, slow.

Play softly on the radio,

Pops and hisses from the fire

Whistle with the bells and choir.

Tomorrow's what I'm waiting for,

But I can wait a little more.

I’m a little snowman, white and fat.
Here is my pipe and here is my hat.
I have got buttons: one, two, three

Will you count them with me?

Don’t throw the snowballs at my hat,

If you do, I will turn around,

And pick some snow up from the ground,

Make a ball or may be two

And then throw snowballs back at you!

This is the season

When mornings are dark,

And birds do not sing,

In the forests and park

This is the season

When children ski,

And Father Frost brings

The New Year Tree!

I like the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar cards play
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

Christmas days are white with snow,

The winds are laughing as they blow.
Across the ponds and lakes we glide,
And over the drifting snow we ride
And down the hills we gaily slide
And shout with all our might!

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men."

Till, ringing singing, on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

So softy came the snowflakes down,

That no one heard in the entire town,

The sunrise up, the land is too,

As parachuting always would do!

So when the morning came sunrise,

The world lay white before your eyes,

With cotton roof the heels are blue,

And even use of rabbit flour!

Scene 1: We see Victorian London street. It gets busier and busier with people and children sing Christmas carols. (Звучит песня We wish you a merry Chtistmas)

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Good tidings we bring to you and your kin;

Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Scrooge: - What an awful noise! I can't hear it anymore! Go away!

Children: - But Mr. Scrooge! We are singing a Christmas carol, sir. Today is Christmas Eve.

Scrooge: - Go away i said! Don't sing in front of my office!

Cratchit: (in a very shy voice): Oh, Mister Scrooge! You have already come, Sir…

Scrooge: Yes! I came here at 8 o'clock. And what time is it now?

Cratchit: 15 minutes past eight, sir.

Scrooge: You are not in time today. I wouldn't pay for the these 15 minutes. Sit down and mind your business!

Cratchit: Yes, sir!

Fred: Merry Christmas, uncle, God bless you!

Scrooge: Humbug! What reasons do you have to be merry? You are poor!

Fred: And you are rich enough! What reasons do you have you to be miserable?

Scrooge: What else should I be when the world is full of fools like you? Holidays are for fools!

Fred: Come on, dear uncle! Let's have a Christmas dinner with me and my family!

Scrooge: Don't waste my time, Fred! I have so many things to do today! Good afternoon!

Fred: Happy New Year, my dear uncle!

Scrooge: Humbug!

Fred: Good bye, Bob! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Cratchit: Thank you Sir!

Scrooge: It's 5 o'clock! I must go. Close the office, Bob!

1st philanthropist: Your generosity, Mr. Scrooge!

Scrooge: Generosity? Ge-ne-what?

1st philanthropist: Christmas is time when we should provide food for the poor who suffer greatly in this cold season! Hundreds and thousands of people are in great need in this city!

Scrooge: What do you mean: the poor are in need? Are there no prisons?

2nd philanthropist: There are plenty of prisons, Sir…

Scrooge: What about workhouses, are they still in operation?

1st philanthropist: But my dear sir, we collect money to buy some food and drink for the poor so that they can celebrate Christmas. So, how much would like to put down for?

Scrooge: Nothing.

2nd philanthropist: You want to remain anonymous?

Scrooge: Anonymous? A-no-ny-mous? I wish to be left alone. I don’t make myself merry at Christmas and I will not help lazy people get merry this time a year. Those badly in need should go to workhouses.

1st philanthropist: In workhouses families are split, parents never get to see their children, brothers and sisters never get to know each other. Many would rather die than go there.

Scrooge: So let them die!

Ghostly voice: Scrooge! Ebenezer Scrooge!

Scrooge: I don't believe my eyes! Marley? But you are dead! You don't exist! It's my imagination!

Jacob Marley: Scrooge! Look at me! Look at these chains! I wear the chain i made during my life! I thouhgt only about my business! I didn't help poor people and that is the result! I have no peace after the death!

Scrooge: Can i help you?

Jacob Marle: Help? Help me? No, it's to late! The same life is waiting for you! I came here to save you! You can change your future still! Three ghosts will visit you one by one. They will help you. Good-bye!

Scrooge: i just ate something! I am sleeping, i am sleeping now! It is not true!

The Ghost of Christmas Past: Get up Scrooge!

Scrooge: Oh, no i want to sleep!

The Ghost of Christmas Past: How lazy you are! Get up i said! I am the Ghost of Christmas Past. Your Past! Come with me to your childhood!

Scrooge: It's me!

The Ghost of Christmas Past: Yes. Just look at this lovely boy! What a good boy you were! But so sad and lonely!

Boy Scrooge: It's a Christmas Eve! Nobody came to see me! Even my father! He hates me because my mother died after my birth! Only books are my friends!

The Ghost of Christmas Past: It was your childhood? let's go to your youth! But before i would like to ask you: do you believe in love, Scrooge?

Scrooge: What a nonsense! Of course i don't!

The Ghost of Christmas Past: But when you were younger, you loved. I can prove it! Wait and see!

Scrooge: I didn't marry her. I wanted to make business, that's why i am rich now.

The Ghost of Christmas Past: (laughing) Rich? You don't have friends, family, wife, children! Is it a life Scrooge? How miserable you are! You can't buy everything!

Scrooge: Leave me, leave me alone!

Christmas of Present: I am a Christmas of present! Let me show you, what is love, family and true life! Give me your hand!

Scene 8: Звучит песня Deck the halls.

Belinda: I am so hungry mother! I can't stand anymore!

Cratchit Child 2: Me too!

Cratchit Child 3: Me too!

Mrs. Cratchit: Wait a minute, please!

Bob: Dear children! Today we are going to celebrate Christmas! Your mother has cooked a special Christmas dinner for us! But what should we say before everything?

All: God bless us everyone!

Bob: Dear Mr. Scrooge, my boss, should we ask something for him too?

Mrs. Cratchit: Oh, no! He is so greedy for money! Who is Mr. Scrooge? He even didn't want to pay you for this holiday!

Bob: My dear, please, don't be so angry with him for the sake of Christmas!

Mrs. Cratchit: Ok. God, bless Mr. Scrooge! And Happy New Year to him!

All children: For Mr. Scrooge!

Scrooge: They are so poor! What a lovely family Bob has!

Ghost of Christmas Present: It's time to go home, Scrooge! Good bye!

Ghost 3: Scrooge! What a useless life you spent! You helped nobody! You had no friends! You always thought only about money! Look here! Here is the result!

Scrooge: No, no! Dear ghost, if i had no chance, you wouldn't show me everything! Listen to me, i am not a man that i was before! i would change all my life! i would become the kindnest person of the world! Please, give me a chance! Please, please!

Ghost 3: God gives you this chance, Scrooge! Use it in the best way! And don't forget about these lessons!

The end
