5 Australia is situated on the oldest and the (small) соntinent. Besides the continent Australia consists of a number of small islands. The official name of the country is the Commonwealth of Australia. Australia is a Federation of six states. Officially the head of the state is Queen Elizabeth II, but the Governor-general (Quentin Bryce) and the Prime minister (Julia Gillard) are the leaders of the nation. Australia Day - 26 January - Australia’s (nation) day; Anzac Day - 25 April – The remembrance day of all those who have served Australia in time of war and in war-like conflicts. New Year’s Day - 1 January - In Australia, New Year’s Day celebrations commence in most capital cities on 31 December, with festivities and fireworks at midnight to welcome in the New Year, Easter - in spring, Christmas Day - 25 December. Australians are a very (friend) open sort of people. They love sports, family barbecues and the beach. are very urbanized - most of them living in the larger cities along the coast. Almost 94% of the population are of European decent and as a result they have a (west) outlook and culture. In general Australians are very tolerant of other people and their customs. Over 85% of the people live in cities. Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra are major cities.
