Bauman Street, Kazan

Baumana Street is a pedestrian street in Kazan. It is named after Nicolay Bauman, a Russian revolutionary, and is located in the central part of the city. The street starts at the foot of the Kremlin and reaches Tukay Square. Bauman Street (formerly Big Prolomnaya) - the oldest street of Kazan survivor the storming of Kazan Kremlin, Revolution and World War II, countless alterations and reconstructions. Historcal street closely intertwined with the history of Tatarstan capital - even the name Prolomnaya is no coincidence appeared here during the storming of Kazan Kremlin in 1552 when Ivan the Terrible’s troops attacked Kazan. They really formed a huge break. Both northern and southern sides of the Kremlin walls were blown up. At the end of the 16th century, the street was named Prolomnaya and later renamed Bolshaya Prolomnaya. It took a lot of time and efforts for the future generations to restore "Kazan Arbat" in appropriate form.

Later the street was named Bogoyavlenskaya (Epiphany) after the church, which was built in 1731-1756. Famous Russian singer Fyodor Shalyapin was baptised in Bogoyavlenskaya Church. Nowadays there is a statue of Shalyapin in Baumana Street near the church. It was opened in 1999. The monument depicts the singer leaving Russia in 1922 and saying farewell to his hometown. Hotel opened in restored building of the former hotel «Council» bears the name of Shalyapin - «Shalyapin Palace Hotel».

In 1930, the street was named Baumana Street in honour of the famous local revolutionary hero Nikolay Bauman. He was born in 1873 and graduated from the Kazan Veterinary Institute. Beautiful, educated, possessing impeccable manners, recklessly brave and courageous, Nikolay Bauman was one of those who most of his life contributed to the spread of revolutionary ideas and the popularity of the image of a revolutionary.

Bauman Street has long been regarded a trading centre. There is a concentration of the main mercantile establishments of the city. The street is the most significant street of Kazan central district. It is famous for its banks and notary`s offices, different shops and cafés, drugstores and hotels. From the beginning of the twentieth century we can see a shop in every building. Bauman Street is paved with multicoloured bricks. Nice benches and two lines of lanterns are set there. You can also enjoy lindens and other decorative bushes in the street. Different fairs and festive presentations are often held in Bauman Street. You have a chance to make your portrait, visit amazing exhibition of wax figures and even to visit a famous Kachalov theatre. In 1803 the building was specially constructed for professional troupe of serf actors. Then the building was owned by the merchant Sinyakov and then rebuilt many times. In 1914 it acquired the final view with a special room for showing films and drama and operetta performances.

Walking in Bauman Street you won`t be able to pass away Bogoyavlensky Cathedral. The temple and its bell tower are colourful attractions of the city and monuments of cult architecture. A new bell tower of Epiphany Church received independent architectural value; gradually it became more famous than the temple itself. This is the highest bell tower in Kazan.

As you have noticed there are some fountains with figures of pigeons and frogs and with a figure of mermaid – Su Anasy - the heroine of the Tatar tales. They are really wonderful decorations of the street.

If you are tired and feel hungry traditional Tatar, Russian and Europe food are always served nearby. Here you can find Tea House and have national food chuck-chuck, gubadiya, triangles or have a meal in MC Donald`s, or have delicious pancakes and tasty pizza. Would you like to have some cold lemonade just in the street? May be you would prefer Japan sushi and rolls? The Bauman Street is absolutely rich in various cuisines.

Down on the street you can see an amazing monument to the carriage of Catherine II - a copy of the replica of the one in which she came to Kazan in 1767. Every woman, a young lady and a girl try to take a lucky chance to imagine herself an Empress.

You feel great emotions seeing metal sculptural and architectural composition of the plump cat lying on the chair in the gazebo with a mouse. People believe that their dreams come true if they pat the cat`s belly. There is a sign at the bottom: «Kazan cat: Astrakhan mind, Siberian intellect...». This cat is a collective image of a Kazan cat, received the name Alabrys.

You can also see the alley of national stars, reminiscent of the Avenue of stars in Hollywood and come across with the memorable sign «Meridian Kazan» which informs you that the North pole - 3808 km, New York - 8033 km, Moscow - 722 km, etc. if you make a wish and touch the pick of the conical structure – you are lucky.

You have learned only a little part of the Bauman Street history. There is much interesting, amazing information about this place. You always leave the street full of pleasant emotions and willing to come back again and again. And when you come you will find something new and wonderful for the next time. I dare say that the Bauman Street is multicultural place, magnificent and very friendly for local people and guests.
