Reading

I. Read the text and match the paragraphs A-D with the information about  animals 1-4:

1. animals that are sometimes dangerous to people

2. animals that can feel things we cannot see

3. animals that help others of the same kind to feed themselves

4. animals that send messages through the ground

The world of nature

A.  Elephants seem to know that other elephants are in trouble. Scientists in Africa have found out that when elephants are frightened they usually stamp their feet to make a noise and cause the ground to shake. Other elephants being 50 km away feel these movements through their feet. They are able to understand where the message is coming from.

B.  We also know that elephants can hear and make secret sounds which people can't hear. It is called infrasound. Whales also use infrasound and send messages that travel 5000 km in the water. Scientists think that they communicate in this way not only to find one another, but also to let other whales know where they can find food.

C.  Sometimes we send out messages without realizing it. Like all animals, humans give off some electricity, and some sea creatures are very good at detecting it. Sharks, for example, can feel the electricity around us when we are in the water. Usually the amounts of electricity are very small so the shark doesn't always know where the person is. However, if the person has a cut, much more electricity goes into the water, guiding the shark when it is better to attack.

D.  Dolphins have one of the most unusual powers in nature- X-ray vision. When dolphins come across an interesting creature, they send out a series of sounds towards it. As a result the dolphins build up a kind of X-ray picture. In this way dolphins are able to look into our bodies and see our bones. Human bones are very similar to a dolphin's, we seem to be very familiar creatures. Probably that is why dolphins are so interested in humans and often help swimmers who are in trouble.

B.  Ten hours later she arrived in Moronia. She knew she had to get to Cartawaya, but how? She saw a woman outside the airport. The woman looked friendly, so Helen asked her politely about transport. The woman pointed to a yellow taxi. Helen got in the taxi and gave the name of the first town on the map. The driver looked surprised because it was a long way away. She repeated the name clearly and showed him some money. "Ok", he said and started the car.
