Theme: Advantages  or disadvantages of using computers and Internet in our life.

Aims: Образовательная – систематизировать   знания  студентов по теме, обобщить  и проверить лексический материал, совершенствовать монологическую и диалогическую речь .

Развивающая - Развивать интерес к своей будущей профессии,  научить  выражать  свои мысли на английском языке, повышать  интерес  к языку, развивать  умения  и навыки  владения иностранным языком, формировать  у студентов  умение  использования  иностранного языка как средства самореализации.

воспитательная  научить  работать в команде, воспитывать  потребности в практическом использовании языка, создание условий для воспитания творческой активности  студентов и взаимопомощи.

дидактическая – создавать условия для осознания и осмысления блока новой учебной информации средствами технологии развивающего обучения и информационно-коммуникационных технологий. Совершенствовать возможности студентов применять знания, полученные на уроках иностранного языка, в работе с компьютером.

Type of the lesson: Complex revision. Generalization  and systematization  of knowledge.

Method of the lesson: individual, group work ,pair work, role-playing .

Equipment: claster, a text, slides, cards with the tasks,  computer.

T: Good day, my friends! I am glad to see you. Today we’ll speak about computers and internet in your life. Dear friends! Welcome to the English lesson for young programmers! We have discussed different problems High technologies at our lessons, and today you will have an opportunity to use your knowledge in new situations. We’ll speak about advantages  and  disadvantages of  using computers. Let's begin! Good luck!

II. Phonetic drills .

a) T:But first let’s do the phonetic exercise and repeat some words concerning the computer

c) T.: Well done, you are grate! And now next task. There are two teams in our group and each of them has to make up sentences  or give the definition with every word. A game’’Tic  Tac Toe” (Игра  «Крестики и нолики»)

1.Printer- Printer is a device that prints text or illus­trations on paper

2. Software- Computer programs are called software. Software is instructions for hardware (the machines) to do work. But you cannot touch software. Software exists as ideas, concepts, and symbols.                                                                       3.Hardware- Hardware are computer components that you can touch, like disks, disk drives, monitors, keyboards, printers, boards, and chips.

4.Microprocessor- Microprocessor is a silicon chip that contains a CPU

5.Mouse- A mouse is a device to move the cursor or pointer on a display screen.

6.Monitor -Monitor is another term for display screen. Nowadays most monitors are colour monitors. Monitors have different screen sizes. 

7.floppy disk -    A soft magnetic disk is called floppy because it flops if you bend it. Floppy disks (often called floppies or diskettes)     

9.Internet  scanner- Optical scanner is a device that can read text or illustrations printed on paper and translate the in­formation into a form the computer can use.

T: a) What are your associations with the word  «Computer».                                             Fill in the claster .( Internet, Bill Gates, Microsoft, computer operator)

 

 

b) All these words remembered us about your future profession. Can you  retell about  your future profession? Why do you choose your profession?(Student’s stories)

P1.:  I am a second-year student at the college in Petropavlovsk. I go on studying programming – I am sure , it’s an up-to-date career that can help me to become a prosperous person.  I regularly take English  twice a week – on Tuesdays and Fridays.  My English is better as I work hard to improve it. My days are usually busy with studies and I am often pressed for time, but I always find a few hours for my hobbies – tennis and Internet. I love sports a lot – it makes me energetic and active. As for Internet, it’s hard for me to imagine my life without communicating, studying and entertaining in the network resources. Every evening I log in my accounts and talk to my bosom friends who are far from me. We keep in touch due to modern data systems and information technologies that became lifework for me.

Read and listen to Ann and Jane.                                                                         Which  things  do they talk about? Make two lists of advantages and disadvantages of computers.                                                                                                                          

 

 

                                                                                                                                                              The Text : Two opposite opinions about the using Personal computers and Internet.

ANN : « I love my Personal computer.                                                                                           I didn’t get one for ages, but now I don’t think I could live without one.                             I have a computer at home and can spend hours working at it.                                         It is much easier to do things on computer, for example to write a composition. You can change the text as many times as you want and you don't need to rewrite everything if you changed something.                                                                                         I think that the profession of programmer can give many opportunities.                           Computers are the most rapidly changing sphere of modern technology.                         We are living in the age of information.                                                                            And I think that the future is just filled with computers.                                         Computers seem to have made a positive contribution to society, enabling individuals to communicate with others rapidly and to perform tasks much more efficiently than if they were to do them manually.                                                            The Internet, in particular, has changed the way that people view the world .                    So after I finish college I want to enter the university.                                                             My hobbies are computer games and computer programming. I want to become a very advanced programmer!
Jane: I really hate  the computers. None of my friends can understand why I haven’t  got one. Computers are used in the workplace and in college, while people also use them in their spare time. You can do so much on a computer that it is very easy to spend too much time on them, since you can play games, do your shopping and communicate with others.

Unfortunately, this can mean that other areas of your life suffer. If you spend all your free time chatting with your online friends to the Internet or playing computer games you may not have as much time for your real-life friends. And  relationships with your  relatives  could suffer if  you sitting in front of your computer screen whole day.

Extensive long-term use of computers may result in a variety of health issues affecting the entire body. Lower back, spine or neck pain may occur in users from poor posture.                                                                                                                       Straining to see the screen in addition to exposure to the brightness of the computer monitor may cause blurred vision, headaches and other issues for the eyes.                      So this means you must never use a computer non-stop without taking any breaks – you should always take breaks to reduce the risk of any of these eye and body problems.                                                                                                                             With so many computers connected to the Internet, users are at risk for a number of safety issues. Viruses, spyware and other forms of malware are a continual problem, and these threats may destroy files or steal personal information. Computers also give predators a new medium to take advantage of children in addition to creating a whole new class of cyber crimes for criminals to commit .

 Work in  groups.

d) T.: Well done, you are grate! And now next task. There are two teams in our group and each of them has to bring some arguments “pros “ and “Cons” of the computer and the Internet. (Второй тур игры, в котором команды пытаются обосновать свою точку зрения относительно использования компьютера и интернета. Одна команда приводит аргументы «за», другая «против». Оценивается объём, грамотность ответов и активность студентов.)

Divide in 2 groups

Discuss these questions. Who do you agree with  Ann or Jane ? Why?

-Answer some questions:                                                                                                 -Have you got your own  Personal computer ?                                                                      -If so, how important is it to you?                                                                                                  -If not, why haven’t you got one?                                                                                     -What are the advantages and disadvantages about Personal Computers? Name them.

Advantages:

1. It is much easier to do things on computer, for example to write a composition. You can change the text as many times as you want.

2,Computers help people to do many things they couldn’t do alone. Without computers weather forecasts would make, more mistakes.

3. Computers help companies keep records, doctors treat sick people, scientists solve problems.

4.The computer is a very useful tool. It helps people to do things better. Computers are fast and accurate.

5. There is a positive side to using computers, though, as you can find out what is going on in the world quickly by accessing various news and social networking sites.

6.You can find music, film and other forms of media online with very little hassle and usually very little cost, if any at all.

7. You can do your shopping online, so that you can save yourself some money and so you don’t have to leave your home.

8. The Internet, in particular, has changed the way that people view the world and how they live their lives.

9.Computers are also useful when paired up with the learning process, whether inside or outside of classrooms.

Teachers use computers to aid presentations, giving pupils a more visual educational experience.

Students receive the benefit of learning software designed to teach new concepts in entertaining methods in addition to access to the Internet for research assistance.

Disadvantages:

1.Unfortunately. If you spend all your free time chatting with your online friends you may not have as much time for your real-life friends.

Thus, your relationships with your relatives  could suffer, especially if you become addicted to the Internet, so that you become lazy and  doing nothing else other than sitting in front of your computer screen.

2.Indeed, there are plenty of examples of plagiarism, where students have copied and pasted some information they have found online and tried to pass it off as their own work. This isn’t particularly good, since students are getting degrees based on work they didn’t do, while the original author loses out by not being credited for his or her research.

3.Extensive long-term use of computers may result in a variety of health issues affecting the entire body.

T:Let’make a conclusion .What examples is more?

The Examples of advantages of using computer is more. You are right. In modern times, computers are present in nearly every home, place of business and classroom .But if you use a computer, you should use it responsibly. So this means you must never use a computer non-stop without taking any breaks – you should always take breaks  in order to reduce the risk of any of the  eyes and body problems.

. You should understand that you must use your time wisely on it too. Time is something that cannot be brought back.

 

Writing

a)T: Make these tasks and check then.                                                                                      Are these sentences true (T) or false (F)?

Role –playing  game with the help of translator .

T: Today we meet a guest at our lesson .The founder of Internet William Henry Gates  came to our college. Our  students put him some questions.

 

S1:-When and where was you born? 

B.G.:  I was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1955

S2: How did you begin your career?

B.G.: While attending Harvard in 1975,   I together with my partner

 Allen developed a version of the BASIC computer programming language for the first personal com­puter.

S3: What is your success is based on?

B.G.:  Much of my success is based on my  ability to use market strategy

S4: What have accumulated your  great wealth  from?

B.G.:I have accumulated great wealth from my holdings of Microsoft stock. Gates still continues to work personally in product development at Microsoft.

S5: What are you  now? What is Microsoft now?                                                         B.G.: I am  a chairman and chief executive officer of the Microsoft Corpo­ration.              I still continue  to work personally in product development at Microsoft.
