Hello, my dear students! And
as you see we are lucky to meet our guests. We’are happy to see you and
welcome to our English lesson! Are you ready? Perfect! Let’s start.
Please, put down the date,
class work and the topic of our lesson in your copybooks.
Now I want you to guess the theme
of our lesson. Watch the episodes of the film. While watching the first episode
try to read information about the company, the producer, the director, the

- What is the film? – «The merchant of Venice», the English
version of the William Shakespeare’s play «The merchant of Venice».
- Who is the director? – Michael Radford
- Which company produced this film? – Arclight Films, Dania

- What is the main character’s name? – Antonio\ Shylock
- Who are the stars? Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes,
Lynn Collins.
So, as you see, today we are
going to continue our work with the Readers, I mean the play of William
Shakespeare «The merchant of Venice». Skim pages 86-87 and try to guess what we
will do during the lesson.

- Let’s identify our aims. What is our final aim?
P1 – Our final aim is to put a play on the stage.
- And what can we do at our today’s lesson to be closer to our final aim?
P2 – As we are dealing with the play of William Shakespeare «The merchant of Venice», to my mind, we should learn as much as
possible information about its author.
- Right. It was your home task to prepare the reports about this
great man.
We can do it by watching the project presentation of Sandra and Helen and
listening to some new facts about William Shakespeare and the results of mini
research of Kate and Sveta.

Shakespeare is his language. Shakespeare is credited by
the Oxford English Dictionary with the introduction of nearly 3,000 words into
the language. The vocabulary, from his works, numbers upward of 17,000 words. Try
to pronounce the second longest word in the English language.

Introducing the topic of a text
Elicit answers to the questions in the rubric p. 86 ex.1.
So, William Shakespeare wrote a lot of wonderful works. One of
them is «The merchant of Venice». What do you know about it?
P1 – Shakespeare wrote The Merchant of Venice in
1596-7.
P2 – The Merchant of Venice is one of
Shakespeare's best-loved plays. It has been translated into many languages.
P3 – In Shakespeare's time, Venice was a very wealthy sea
port. There were many merchants like Antonio.

- Read the text and elicit what each person in the list has to
do with the story. I think we should tell our guests about the plot of the
play.
P4 – The Merchant of Venice tells
a number of stories which are all connected. There is the love story of
Bassanio and Portia: Bassanio loves Portia, but he needs to borrow money so
that he can travel to Belmont and ask her to marry him. There is the story of
the friendship between Antonio and Bassanio: Antonio wants to help Bassanio
find the money he needs, but the cost is very high. Then there is the story of
two old enemies, Shylock and Antonio: Antonio decides to ask Shylock for help,
but Shylock sees his chance to take a terrible revenge.

– Who are these men? Well, Vika, you are going to play the role
of Antonio. How do you feel this character? Introduce yourself, please.
P1 – I’m Antonio. I’m a rich merchant. I make my money by
trade buying and selling things in other countries. They say I am a good man
and always try to help people. However, this can get me into serious trouble.
- What is typical of your character, Vova? I mean the role of Bassanio.
P2 – I’m Bassanio. I’m Antonio’s best friend and a
romantic hero of this story. I want to marry Portia, and I ask Antonio to help
me win her love. They say I am a loyal friend, but I am young, and like to
spend a lot of money.

Well, Paul, how do you feel yourself as Shylock?
P3 – I am Shylock. I am a rich and successful
moneylender. I have a difficult life because many people in Venice have no
respect for moneylenders. I am fond of money. Sometimes I am angry because
people treat me badly. I think of a clever and terrible plan to hurt Antonio.
- Now it’s a turn of the girls to follow the behavior of their
heroines. What can you say about your characters?
P4 – My name is Portia. I am the heroine of the story.
I am a rich woman. They say I am beautiful and very clever. I love Bassanio
very much, and when he is in trouble, I will do everything I can to help him
and his friend.
P5 – I am Nerissa. I am Portia’s maid, and we are also good
friends. I listen to Portia’s problems and always give her sensible advice.
They say I am very understanding and have a sense of humor.
