The
English calendar.
The modern British calendar comes from the Romans but
before this the English people (Anglo-Saxons) had their native names for the
months.
At present the first month of the year is called
January - the month of Janus. Janus was a Roman God of Beginnings and Endings.
He had two faces: on the front and on the back of the head. Janus
could look into the past and the future.
The old English name for January was Wulfmonath,“month
of wolves”.
The name of February comes from Latin februa – a Roman
festival of purification. And the old English called this month
Sprote-Kale-Monath – the month when the cabbage begins to grow.
March is the month of Mars, Roman God of war. In old
Britain March was called Hyld-Monath – the windy month.
We don’t know why Romans called April its name but the
old name for this month in England was Easter-Monath, the month of Easter.
May is named after the Roman goddess of growth Maya.
The English name Trimilce means “to milk three times”.
June is named after the Roman family of Junius.
Anglo-Saxons called it Sere-Monath, the dry month.
July is the month of Julius Caesar. The English called
July Maed-Monath, the meadow month because meadows are in bloom in July.
August is named after another Roman Emperor - Augustus
Caesar, the nephew of Julius Caesar. The Old English name for August was
Weod-Monath, the month of weed.
September, October, November, December are just
seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth months of the year. (In fact, once March was
the first month of the year.)
Anglo-Saxons named them Harfest-Monath, the harvest
month (September), Win-Monath, the wine month (October), Blod-Monath, the blood
month (November, when people killed their cattle for food), Mid-Winter-Monath,
the middle of the winter (December).
